Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

"I started building almost 50 years ago, and have lived in a self-built home ever since. If I’d been able to buy a wonderful old good-feeling house, I might have never started building. But it was always cheaper to build than to buy, and by building myself, I could design what I wanted and use materials I wanted to live with.

I set off to learn the art of building in 1960. I liked the whole process immensely. Hammering nails. Framing — delineating space. Nailing down the sub-floor, the roof decking. It’s a thrill when you first step on the floor you’ve just created.

Ideally I’d have worked with a master carpenter long enough to learn the basics, but there was never time. I learned from friends and books and by blundering my way into a process that required a certain amount of competence. My perspective was that of a novice, a homeowner — rather than a pro. As I learned, I felt that I could tell others how to build, or at least get them started on the path to creating their own homes.

Through the years I’ve personally gone from post and beam to geodesic domes to stud frame construction. It’s been a constant learning process, and this has led me into investigating many methods of construction — I’m interested in them all. For five years, the late ’60s to early ’70s, I built geodesic domes. I got into being a publisher by producing Domebook One in 1970 and Domebook 2 in 1971. I then gave up on domes (as homes) and published our namesake Shelter in 1973. We’ve published books on a variety of subjects over the years, and returned to our roots with Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter in 2004, Builders of the Pacific Coast and The Barefoot Architect in 2008, and Tiny Homes in 2012.

Building is my favorite subject. Even in this day and age, building a house with your own hands can save you a ton of money (I’ve never had a mortgage) and — if you follow it through — you can get what you want in a home." -Lloyd Kahn

5.0 von 5 Sternen Life-changing, dream-defining masterpiece 11. Juni 2014

I have read many books on RVs, trailers and alternative forms of shelter, including one other that I reviewed fairly recently. This is the best by such a wide margin that there's no comparison. Here's why:

-Excellent profiles not just of "stuff" but of people. These people provide inspiration, represent a great diversity of personalities, geographic locations, lifestyles and home styles, and give the book a lot of true character.

-Lots of pictures showing not glitz but detail. So many books like this look like they were conceived by the publisher's graphic designers and not the content creator. This book is different. The pictures help tell the story and you can tell these aren't models put there for effect, but the real people.

-Lots of words. Going with the above, many books like this are full of pictures with skimpy descriptions of the people who really make the story, leading one to think the pictures were actually taken in a museum or something and human details are mainly the product of the author's speculation. "Look how people must have used this..." and so on. Not here. Many of the profiles are in the subject's own words, while others are well written in the third-person.

-Perfect blend of "tech" and story. If you are interested in building such a vehicle, there are details here, and if you're just interested in reading about these people, it's still fascinating. Some books are all about facts and figures, losing the dream in piles of minutiae, while others are all fluff and no meat. Here you have both the material to form a dream and enough detail to make it materialize.

-Beautifully printed, large format. There's just an impressive amount of quality content here. Hundreds of vehicle pictures, many shots of interiors and settings, and of course the text that makes this a real book with substance and not a coffee table book that you flip through and put down.

I am ordering two more copies for.people I care about who have some of the same dreams I do and will value and treasure this book as I do. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Most Inspiring Book I Own 12. Mai 2014
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I've built a few nice camper vans over the years but these go far beyond nice.
Every one is a true work of art and most are not what I'd call "hippy wagons".
These reflect a much more serious artistic effort and each one is dripping with character.
There are all kinds of "mobile cabins" in this book and each one has its own charm.

I saw one reviewer who said "look at the pictures and then what?"
Look at the pictures again, and again..... and then start drawing sketches of your moving home project.
Or go out and start remodeling your camper.
If you are a person with tools you could get into a lot of trouble with this book.

This book is gem that you can look at again and again and again.
If it's a coffee table book it's a great one.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Mobile Homes from Mobile Imaginations 9. Mai 2014

I can't think of a better word than "inspirational" to describe Lloyd Kahn's newest collection . This time, scores of odd and wonderful handmade mobile homes and house boats. The photos, the back stories, and the links make "Tiny Homes on the Move" a window into what is possible when the will is there to create. If you are on the fence about doing something so crazy as to build your own home, this collection may inspire you to tear down that fence and use the boards to build your own dream mobile. Definitely 5 stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic Book- great photos, wildly eclectic homes, shelters, and cottages 6. Mai 2014
Von Rockguy30 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Its another great offering from Lloyd Kahn (as to be expected), and much like his past offerings, this one is just loaded with great color photos of tiny houses, houseboats, shelters, cabins, and cottages (and now boats) from around the world. There are so many varied and creative homes within this book that if you can't find any inspirational ideas for your own home, or future build, I really don't know what to say.
