Kurzbeschreibung

DRAFTED INTO THE ARMY OF TIME

Intelligence agents have uncovered something which seems beyond belief, but the evidence is incontrovertible: the USA's greatest adversary on the world stage is sending its agents back through time! And someone or something unknown to our history is presenting them with technologies—and weapons—far beyond our most advanced science. We have only one option: create time-transfer technology ourselves, find the opposition's ancient source . . . and take it down.

When small-time criminal Ross Murdock and Apache rancher Travis Fox stumble separately onto America's secret time travel project, Operation Retrograde, they are faced with a challenge greater than either could have imagined possible. Their mere presence means that they know too much to go free. But Murdock and Fox have a thirst for adventure, and Operation Retrograde offers that in spades.

Both men will become time agents, finding reserves of inner heroism they had never expected. Their journeys will take the battle to the enemy, from ancient Britain to prehistoric America, and finally to the farthest reaches of interstellar space. . . .

Andre Norton schreibt wundervolle SF Romane.

Dezember 2013
Von Kindle Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is another of Norton's Classic tales. This novel is, in a sense, a time machine as well as being a story about time travelling. Written during the Cold War period, this novel gives the reader a look into the fears of the American populace in the first decade after the advent of nuclear fission and the proliferation of the early Nuclear States (most notably the Republican United States of America and the Communist United Soviet States of Russia). The Science Fiction genre has always been an excellent foil for authors to use when exploring sensitive social topics without causing great upset in their readers and this novel is an excellent example of such social commentary. Norton uses the "time race" in the novel to illustrate the behaviors of the participants in the actual Arms Race of the time without involving real entities of that time period. This removed the emotional components of the day from the problem and allowed Norton to discuss the issues of the "time race" (which paralleled the actual Arms Race) in a nonthreatening setting--because time travelling is hypothetical and doesn't involve real people or states, their possible actions or reactions nor the possible consequences of their actions.

And it's a great adventure tale too!
4.0 von 5 Sternen Good adventure story... actually two related stories 25. April 2013
Von Thomas Coffey - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

The late Andre Norton was a prolific writer of good Science Fiction yarns, was nominated for and won numerous awards, and has an award in her name for outstanding work in the fantasy or science fiction for young adult literature. One of her book series, The Beast Master, spawned several movies of that theme and name in the 80's.
I first became acquainted with her writings in the late 50's, and found her books to be great adventure stories for the juvenile market. That doesn't demean her work in any way, but rather means that her work is very readable, of reasonable length, and filled with adventure and imagery that interests and entertains even younger readers. Adults may want more techno-babble, a much longer story with deeper character development, plot twists and turns, maybe a bit of romance or sexiness, perhaps frequent terrifying passages that fill with anxiety. But Andre wrote enjoyable books you might finish on a cross country flight or a day or two of rainy vacation and be thoroughly entertained.
Recurring themes in Andre's novels is the alienated outsiders finding themselves along a journey of adventure that allows them to realize their full potential. Quite an effective theme for younger men and women. The setting often is an earth-like world or worlds, and include animals of various sorts, some with telepathic or empathic abilities. The journey is often through space or time, in some cases, as in this novel, both, and the quest is often for alien technology to aid our own reach for the stars.
The Time Trader is the first in a series of seven books that build on the main character and/or theme. The Time Trader is a two part novel, the first part introduces the main character and supporting players and setting, and moves to a satisfactory completion of an adventure in time of discovery and accomplishment. The second part introduces a second main character, and unfolds an adventure both in time and space that sets the stage for novels to come in this series.
For me four stars means that I really liked this adventure, but I am not rushing out to find the next book, yet I will read the next and rest when I come across them. Five stars would mean that I'd be immediately getting the sequel and telling everyone that they really must read this.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The start of a great saga by the Queen of Sci-Fi! 28. Oktober 2012
Von JJCEO - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I love Andre Norton and to me she is the Queen of Sci-Fi. I started reading Andre Norton at a very young age and she is one of the authors who got me hooked on Sci-Fi. I kept every one of the original paperback books I purchased as a child to create a library and I have most of her original book releases. Today I enjoy reading books on the Kindle Fire and the Kindle Keyboard version and one of the things I enjoy the most is reading the old Sci-Fi classics. The first books I got when I received my first Kindle were Andre Norton's best stories.

The Time Traders was the start of a series of books by Norton that covered the Time War. Russia is sending time agents back into time and discovering ancient weapons of alien origin. The United States has no option but to seek out those technologies for ourselves or be faced with an even more powerful enemy. A special team of agents are put together to go back in time acting as merchant traders to find out where the Russians have found technology from a space traveling civilization that came to earth in our ancient past....

This is an excellent book and one of the first that got me started on my lifelong love of Sci-Fi stories and movies. Andre Norton was a visionary and a tremendous story teller. She captured my heart and mind as a child and I still love her work over 50 years later. I recommend this book to you.
3.0 von 5 Sternen OK, But not Great 14. Mai 2017
Von Hillel Kaminsky - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This “omnibus edition” contains the books, The Time Traders published in 1958 and Galactic Derelict published in 1959. (The books were updated by the author in 2000 to modernize them.) There are 5 more books in the Time Trader series, which strangely were not included in this omnibus edition. This book didn't grab me, however, and I felt no need to continue reading the series. I found this strange as I usually love time travel, aliens, and a mystery.

5.0 von 5 Sternen TWO Time Trader Novels not just One 30. August 2013
Von Gene T. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
TIME TRADERS and GALACTIC DERELICT are tow full novels in this Norton Book. Both are based in man's ability to travel into the past through gates discovered in the United States and the Soviet Union. (Cold War set in time anyone?)

I first fell in love with books by Andre Norton as a child. This book, like many at the time was one half of an ACE Double Book. You got Two Books: one at each end, for the price of one, usually $0.40 or $0.50 When she wrote this book, all Science Fiction writers were men, hence Andre Norton, not Mary Alice North. Like many of the classic SCI FI novels, this was free and it was easy to make the decision to order and re-read this great book. If you have never read this book, get it now, sit back, read and enjoy. (I do not do spoilers, but there were enough other reviews here that gave away the plot so ...)
