?This book is an insightful and extremely practical resource for students who will seek a career in translation, be it in a literary, technical, or commercial environment. The book is so clearly written and well organized that it could easily be used for independent study? Moreover, the established scholar or translator may find the book, especially the chapters on modal particles and focus, to be a useful reference work.? Christopher D. Sapp on LinguistList

'A well-conceived and extremely useful book, the only one of its kind available, and particularly to be valued for its emphasis on the creative and decision-making aspects of translation.' - Jean Boase-Beier, UEA

'[There is a] decisive increase in the introduction of translation programmes, mainly at postgraduate level, but now also at undergraduate level. Textbooks therefore are essential, and the present one has a lot to offer in this respect.' - Christina Schaffner, Aston University

Synopsis

"Thinking German Translation, Second Edition", is a comprehensive practical course in translation for advanced students of German, which focuses on improving translation quality whilst clarifying the theoretical issues involved. This second edition brings the course up-to-date, and has been fully reworked to give clearer explanations of key terms and include revised chapters on genre, compensation and revision and editing. Based on detailed analysis of translations problems, "Thinking German Translation" features new material taken from a wide range of sources, including: business and politics; press and publicity; engineering; tourism; literary and consumer-oriented texts. Addressing a variety of translation issues such as cultural differences, and register and dialect, "Thinking German Translation" is essential reading for all students wishing to perfect their translation skills. It is also an excellent foundation for those considering a career in translation. A tutor's handbook for this course, giving guidance on teaching methods and assessment, is also available in PDF format from the Routledge website.

Format: Taschenbuch
This how-to book is easy to understand and all the jargon is explained. It is excellent for people wanting to become translators, but even to experienced professionals, like myself, there is some useful information. It starts off with analysing what a translation is and detailing what points need to be considered (cultural, text types etc). Then it goes into the finer points of translating into German (how do I translate "einmal, schon" etc). Thoroughly recommended.

We used this book as a textbook in a course on translation methodology. It easily divides into 17 (well, 16 if you take away the summary and conclusion) chapters of roughly equal length. Thus, one chapter can be used as the basis for a session each. Every chapter also has a number of exercises to apply the newly gained insights. The only problem is that the book is mainly intended for English-speaking students that want to translate FROM German INTO English; thus, the practice texts are mostly German, which may make it too hard for Germans who need to translate into English. Still, if you look for similar English texts to be translated into German, you will not have any problems.

In addition to the 13 methodological chapters, the book has three chapters on typical problems that arise for the language pair German-English, a glossary and an index. The language of the book is very accessible. In short, this book is probably the best book for translation classes that are concerned with translating between English and German.

This book is a valuable resource for people who wish to translate from German to English or are learning to do so. This edition has been rewritten from earlier editions and it is a great improvement. The explanations are clear and there are lots of examples. Perhaps the only drawback for American readers is that the authors taught in Scotland, so the English is British English. This is not really a problem in the text, but some usages in the translated examples may sound a little strange to American ears, but this is a minor problem, given the excellent presentation and explanations. I highly recommend this book. === nbz

For anyone that is interested in translating texts from German to English, this is an essential. This book will help you understand how complicated and multi-faceted the art of translating is and it is also a good place to start for anyone interested in translation. Great examples from actual published translations and good commentary that follows.

Books on translating from German to English are rare enough that one seizes on them regardless of usefulness. This one is actually useful; the writing is clear and interesting, and contains a wealth of examples and exercises to illustrate the nuances of translating from German. Pretty pricy yet, but any decent university library should have a copy.
