Pulls at the heart strings

A real tear jerker. Prison did actually save her life. She finally stood up to that mind controlling, abusive and evil husband. It just goes to show how being subjected and/or growing up in a violent home leads to codependency, believing as her brave little daughter stated " believed it was normal." I don't even know if the Mom knew how her little girl told the truth on her behalf to get a retrial. God works in mysterious ways. I believe that the mother's Dad, even though he was a wonderful man lead to her marriage to a controlling man. Her own father, with the best of intentions was the first controller she grew up with. The fact that it is a true story made me cry. Through her hard lessons, she turned her life around to become a counselor for battered women. My advice to such women to get counselling to break the vicious cycle of codependency. Definitely a 5 star movie.
Its not a Lifetime movie!

I have been looking for a good movie to watch for quite some time. Somehow, I always ended up with "Lifetime of the week" sorts of movies. Blech! I really enjoyed this movie. I, as many other reviewers have stated, was also married to an abusive man for ten years, so some of the things looked and felt so familiar. Thankfully the one thing I was able to put my foot down on was no guns in the house. But that was a long time ago, so I was able to really enjoy this movie just on its on merits. Wow, a movie for grown ups that was entertaining, not hokey or stupid, and based on real events.

I liked this movie because it showed how one woman stood up to her abusive husband and took her life back. Even though it is an older movie it was still a good movie. I hope their is a message in this movie that will help other women that have been in abusive relationships also.

Excellent movie! Kudos for bringing this true-life event to the big screen to be shared with all. There are various life lessons that can be taken away from viewing this movie.

Fun to mock, particularly if you have knowledge of criminal law and the appeals process.

I nearly gave a 3rd star, but only because I eventually stopped being outraged at the inaccurate and/or implausible depiction of various legal proceedings and gave in to helpless, uncontrollable laughter. From contact visits between male and female prisoners as they begin serving their life sentences, to an appeal (heard by what a caption helpfully informs us is "Highest Appellate Court") that looked like a mini trial, to a surprise birthday party in a women's prison, complete with frosted cake presented by grinning inmates standing amongst several equally benign corrections officers. I was half expecting them all to suddenly begin a choreographed song and dance routine, culminating in a successful prison escape. That would be more plausible than the real ending, at least as it is shown in this film. I'm sure the woman whose real life case inspired this did not have such a fast and easy reversal of fortune. This isn't an awful movie, but it is not one I can recommend. You've likely seen others with similar plots but with realistic depictions of the legal system, prison life, and appellate court proceedings. They really were outrageous, some of these errors. I honestly wasn't trying to find them, they just couldn't be missed.
