Well, I read the book. I loved the way it was written, very funny. But the mainstory was hard for me to find. Perhaps because I am not native english, perhaps because I didnt read the book in one time. But it really was a pitty that I lost it many times. I think it is easier when you read it at once (dont stop) and maybe being native english is a very big plus too. I liked it though. It appeared to me as being a little cheap, but that guy is a great fantasy-man. I dont think it is worth reading if you only read serious literature. If you want to read something funny on a vacation, you might find this book as a very good pleasing solution...

Hugh Laurie's engaging meta-spy novel THE GUN SELLER is a great piece of fast, incredibly readable fun. I read the book in two days. The book stands in between the hyphens of many different genres and, oddly enough, it is probably its place as a humor novel that is most frustrating. While the cynical, witty spy novel aspect of this book is compelling, as is its political tretises, I found myself wishing that Laurie could, every now and then, set his comedy aside. While, for the most part, the comedy of the book is incredibly well crafted, it occasionally borders on the cute. One passage in which he writes, for example "Outside, it was snowing; well, of course it was snowing outside," comes to mind as an example. Despite this, Hugh Laurie's "The Gun Seller" is a great achievement and an excellent first novel, if not quite so great as his comedy partner, Stephen Fry's THE LIAR. Pick them both up, and enjoy them both as separate meta-novels bent on turning thrillers upside down.

Thomas Lang, former professional infantryman, and nowadays witty, decent and courageous loser, gets mixed up with a racket of the arms trade. He gets involved with idealists, the British and US secret service, and revolutionaries, and finds love. This is a high-speed very funny and gripping, twisted crime/spy-story. I virtually read the book in one sitting and liked it very much.
If you like science fiction from Douglas Adams or fantasy fromTerry Pratchett you will like this book as well. It is the first novel of Hugh Laurie, so there is some painting with a broad stroke, but I would love to read more from him.
I recommend this book for fun and entertainment.

Mr. Laurie has done little to discourage us from imagining his stage persona Wooster as we picture the protagonist of "The Gun Seller," Thomas Lang. In fact, the image fits perfectly -- one to one. And that's all right. But unfortunately it has the effect of minimizing another aspect of the novel that is ultimately far more rewarding: Lang's brilliant ruminations on the subject of... just about everything he encounters. Again and again (like five times per page), the story comes to a grinding halt while Lang comments on the absurdity of the moment. These comments are not only laugh-out-loud hilarious, but they can also survive the kind of critical scrutiny usually lavished on Louis Carroll's conundrums and brain teasers. You'll do yourself a disservice if you make this book a "quick read." Throw each of these comments about from one brain cell to another (like the way you slosh wine around your mouth during those wine tastings you abhor but seem to attend anyway) and see if you don't agree they're worth the attention. The plot isn't too bad, but it is definitely merely a vehicle for Lang's observations of his peculiar world. A better plot would have forced me to award a 10 to this otherwise quite perfect specimen of a book.

Thomas Lang is just a normal man. Until someone offers him a lot of money to kill a businessman. After this everything gets worse and worse for him. He has to deal with brutal weapons dealers, has to fight against CIA killers and while doing all this also has to stop one of the biggest terrorist attacks in history, all this to see get his big love back.

The Gun Seller, published in 1996 by the Washington Square Press, is Hugh Laurie's first novel. He is a famous actor and comedian, currently playing in the television programm House. The Gun Seller is a fast and action-loaded thriller. It is complicated and deals with a lot of world issues. Hugh Laurie combines thrilling and serious moments with his extraordinary humor to all around good story.

The characters are being explained very well and it is easy for the reader to bond with the main character. Main character Thomas Lang is a strong and smart person but has a great humor at the same time. His actions fit to his character.
The story takes place in many different parts of the world and the author is able to let the reader picture them nicely. The novel is packed of information and the reader has to read slowly to understand everything. Sometimes it gets a bit too confusing but at the end all the in the beginning not understandable information are brought up again to have a good ending. Hugh Laurie tells us about armsdealer, how much power they have in the world, how the intelligence services lead the world.

This book is definitly a very good first novel for Hugh Laurie and the combination of comedial and serious elements make it a very likable and worth reading story.
