This book reads like it was written by a young student of politics. Every other paragraph a reminder of how bad burocracy and dictatorship can get, sort of soviet union feel to it. I wasn't able to get past halfway, maybe it gets into some action away from the polemic...

A little on the gory side in places but well thought out story!

If you combine a cynical look at today's political systems with near-term science fiction, this is an all too believable tale of where we may be headed. Take it as political criticism, or take it as science fiction - either way a good tale!

This story plays out on an earth that is running against the "limits of growth" and in addition is suffering under an all knowing police state world government.

The setting itself is quite well thought out and consistent. Most of the technology is believable except where it is most important. The story suffers under several deux-ex-machina moments where the protagonist is using his own personal technology upgrades to change the odds.

As a summary it is:
fast paced and thrilling
bloody
high tech
hard to get a connection to the characters
in many parts the technology is unrealistic

I was struck by the scale of this novel, and from the outset I am looking forward to the second part. It is a grim world indeed that Mr. Asher has depicted, but I just wonder how close he is to reality in certain places. It took me a while to get into the central character, a sort of cyborg, but in the end one does become a bit more familiar with him, and the entire world that is depicted by Mr. Asher.

The writing is dynamic, the action never ending, there was some gore (which is not really my thing), but overall there was a techy feeling mixed with dystopia that worked very well.

I can see this making a great screenplay as well.

I read both this book and the next in the series and I have to say I love both of them. The future portrayed in these books is one you can really believe in, if you take a look at todays society and politicians. There is almost non-stop action, the story has a couple of very engaging characters. The main character undergoes really big growth, which is also fun to read. I can't wait for book three.
