Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
Chris Spielman was the first high school athlete to appear on a Wheaties box, became a two-time All-American for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and remains one of the most popular players in school history. He went on to play eight seasons for the Detroit Lions in the NFL, earning a Pro-Bowl selection four times. When his wife Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998, Chris took a year off to be with her, and the two later created the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. He currently hosts a daily sports radio show in Columbus, Ohio, and is well known as a college football analyst for ESPN.

At Christmas-time, I've always enjoyed looking through all of the new sports books that've been published, choosing several that I think my husband would be interested in, and this one was the one he began reading immediately when he received his book selections a couple of years ago - never saw him devour a book so quickly, and this is a man who had once limited himself to sports articles from magazines or the newspaper. Truly a special and poignant book.
My husband's own experience with Stage 3 colon cancer - which sorely tested, and then renewed his own faith - made the book especially meaningful to him, and I'm so appreciative of the courage it took for Mr. Spielman to be willing to open up and share his experience. This is a book my husband has now passed on to a friend who has bone cancer; the overall message of the book is one of courage and leaves you feeling uplifted. It'll be on my husband's "re-read" list as well.
I'm not much of a football fan but reading about Chris during those years was quite entertaining but also, you now know why he is the way he is and tackles everything with such determination.
It's a love story that breaks your heart because of the ending. Their relationship is exactly what every parents wants for their children.
It's a book about determination, strength, the will to live, and live life to the fullest. I don't know of many people that could take this terrible disease and do what Chris and Stefanie did AND maintain a new normal for their children.
While I was reading this, I kept thinking that every high school, college and professional football player should read this. Copies of this book should be in every locker room! Then I thought, everyone should read this book! This is truly a book that everyone should read.
I remember when our oldest daughter (now 20) was about 9 or 10 and we were talking about Stef one night before bed and she said to me, "Mom, I think Mrs. Spielman is an angel and was put here on this earth to help others and when her job is done, she will return to heaven" She was right.

He got both. The luckiest man on earth.
Chris worked hard to be the best football player he could be, but he worked harder to be a good husband and father. Not because after eight years of marriage, Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer, and he stopped playing football to care for her. I felt he was doing the right thing. Admirable, but the right thing.
You see, I live in central Ohio, and watched Chris play football while he attended The Ohio State University. I'm not a pro fan, so I figured I would not be following his life after he was drafted to the Lions, but I was wrong, because of Stefanie's cancer and the beautiful journey they shared while she was alive.
In this touching memoir, Chris talks about his passion for football, and his passion for Stefanie and their four children. He tells about Stefanie's treatments, the times she rallied, the times she got sicker, and the daunting amount of public service he and Stefanie did.
During their beautiful journey, Chris and Stefanie maintained grace, dignity, and faith - in the public eye. They shared their journey with the world as it unfolded, and now Chris shares it in this book.
Why were Chris and Stefanie put on earth? After you read this, you'll understand they were put here to serve. And this book serves as a reminder of how powerful love can be. It also gets the hb stamp of approval, reserved only for my best buys. Not because I love football, or because I already knew so much about the story, but because it is such an incredible story, and one you should read.
