This is a cozy mystery set in Taos, New Mexico. Samantha Sweet is a part-time caretaker of foreclosed properties, but she wants to start her own bakery business; Sweet's Sweets.
In the course of her caretaking duties, she finds a dying woman with the reputation of being a witch and an unmarked grave at another property. Two in one day? A little too coincidental, but that brings the police into the picture in the person of Beau Cardwell, the love interest.
I didn't have much feeling for Sam until she talked about her early years (she's in her 50's here) and how she ended up in Taos with a daughter. Then she became more real to me.
It wasn't too difficult to figure out some of the elements of the mystery, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's always nice to find out you are right.
I gave this three stars because there was just too much description of housecleaning and cake icing. Otherwise, Sweet Masterpiece is a well-written enjoyable read. If you want to relax for the afternoon, this is a nice book to do it with.
Unfortunately, there was no recipe for Triple Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes in the back of the book.
One day, she found a very ill, very unusual woman lying in bed in one of the houses. The woman gave Sam a box which she said had special powers, then she died. When she was mowing the yard at the next house, she discovered an unidentified grave. Both those finds play major roles in SWEET MASTERPIECE.
Her new powers give her more energy and the ability to see things others cannot. The body in the grave is that of a recluse, an elderly man who turned out to have been a famous painter. The sheriff’s department initially believes he may have died from pneumonia or another natural cause.
While the book was a fast read and well-written, I found the plot to be very thin. There were some very good descriptions of various locations. It had a lot of filler material about making cakes and cupcakes (no recipes were provided) and an overview, repeated several times, of what Sam did to prepare a house.
The book has a lot of characters, primarily some of Sam’s long-time friends. She talks about her daughter Kelly who cleaned out Sam’s savings. Later the daughter returns but the story doesn’t give enough details about why she quit her job or why she suddenly changed.
Another main character is the sheriff, Beau Cardwell. The relationship between him and Sam moves too quickly without explanation of Beau’s motivation.
Overall, I found the book to be boring because of all the surface attention given to Sam’s jobs. It might have made a better short story.
This book was a free Amazon download.
I found the main character's job as a house "cleaner" for re-possessed homes a fascinating side-note to the story and a great way to explain all of Ms. Sweet's unusual talents; e.g.,picking locks.
If the rest of the series indicates an ongoing reliance on the paranormal, this will definitely be my last Samantha Sweet mystery (though I wouldn't mind a few of those recipes for the baked goods she whips up!).
