'I finished this book a week ago and it's honestly been on my mind ever since' Guardian Reviewer `[This] reminded me of a dark Sweet Valley High in places ... The chapters also cleverly alternative perspective and in general I think there are some really interesting story-telling tactics used' Emma Gannon, Girl Lost in the City `I found myself absolutely hooked and the ending absolutely blew me away. June doubts her former best friend died in a fiery suicide, since Delia feared one thing--fire. Suddenly, June suspects everyone of Delia's murder. The suspects include: her too good thing be true boyfriend, Delia's distraught boyfriend, a drug dealer and a Delia's current best friend. The deeper June delves, the more questions she has. Might she be the killer's next target if she keeps asking questions?
I'm going to be purposefully cryptic to avoid spoilers because SUICIDE NOTES FROM BEAUTIFUL GIRLS has so many twists and turns you won't want to miss. June narrated the first half of the book, with third person observation flashbacks. When she and Delia were BFFs, she felt stronger, more social and a better version of her awkward self. Delia is a reckless as June is tame, a risk taker. For all her bravado, she showed the deeply wounds only to June. The second half of the boos added another first person narrator.
Lynn Weingarten perplexed me for the entire second half of the book. When I thought I knew what what was happening, another twist caught me off guard. Some of the scenarios were completely preposterous and I wondered why Weingarten didn't choose more plausible explanations. I loathe open ended last chapters. Since I never felt most of my questions were answered, I gave 4 rather than 5 stars.
SUICIDE NOTES FROM BEAUTIFUL GIRLS is compulsively readable, a page turner. It read more like a mystery than a thriller to me, my heart didn't beat fast, I didn't hold my breath, yet I wanted to keep reading and was disappointed to be finished when I reached the last page.
