HASH(0x9aabf390) von 5 Sternen wonderfully written book that would serve as a valuable resource to anyone 17. Januar 2014
Von Young Mensan BookParade - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This is a thorough and informative book aimed at providing parents, advocates, teachers, administrators, and other professionals with information on the theories pertaining to suicide among gifted students, and how we can prevent these tragedies. The book does not assume any prior knowledge in suicide or psychology and spends the first three chapters giving the reader an overview of what suicide is, national suicide statistics, and risk and protective factors. From there, major theories of suicide are explored, with a special emphasis on how these relate to students with gifts and talents. This leads into a model of suicidal behavior in gifted children. The last two chapters offer ways to prevent suicide in our gifted children and ways to help children who have experienced suicidal thoughts or attempts to heal. Throughout this book, the overarching message is that though the problem may seem enormous, suicide is preventable, and we can offer hope and healing to these students. This book is able to provide appropriate information to individuals with all levels of training in psychology and education. School administrators and teachers will especially appreciate the school-based approach to suicide prevention presented which includes ideas and strategies on how to prevent suicide in the school setting. Though it is a short read, this is a wonderfully written book that would serve as a valuable resource to anyone interested in the psychological well-being of gifted and talented students.
HASH(0x9a83b948) von 5 Sternen A must for practitioners of gifted youth 6. April 2015

This book doesn't add a lot that is new, but clearly states that there is very little research to draw from. To his credit, Cross doesn't publish "from the gut" but rather from evidence. Perhaps one of the greatest offerings from this book is exposing the need for more research, especially since what people think about suicide among the gifted may not be borne out by what is actually known about suicide among gifted youth. By necessity, it is more like there are two parallel threads - youth suicide and gifted youth. Occasionally they overlap to some degree. Cross's earlier psychological autopsies form the basis of much of what is reported that is specific to gifted youth and suicide and I would encourage readers to find and read those for a deeper look into a few concrete examples. Cross has devoted much of his life to studying and reporting on suicide in gifted youth and for that, we should be thankful.

The models of the suicidal mind are valuable for practitioners. These underscore the reasons for suicidal thoughts and how youth get to the point that they actually see suicide as a viable option. The book is short and easy to read which means people may actually do so. For those reasons alone, this should be on the book shelf of every counselor and GT specialist.
