The Great Wedding Giveaway - Book 7

Once upon a time, Marly Akers had believed that, for better or worse, people made their own luck…

Marly wonders how she could ever have believed it. Jilted and pregnant, she’s come back to Marietta with her tail between her legs, the blow to her ego huge as she begins working at her family’s small newspaper, the Copper Mountain Courier, and sharing a tiny apartment with her disapproving mom.

Things can’t get any worse. Or maybe they can. Drake Everett, who secretly captured her teenaged heart and then publicly trampled on it, decides to make her re-acquaintance. Though Drake isn’t the sharp, funny, cocky, arrogant rich boy of yore. These days he seems sharp, funny… and supportive and decent, and Marly realizes she could fall for him all over again… if she listens to her heart. But what about her reporter’s head, which has sniffed out a story that paints Drake as the sweet talker she’s always known…?

HASH(0x8db69a20) von 5 Sternen a bit different, but another good story set in Marietta. 20. Mai 2014
Von Feehan5 - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
The good: Loved the different storyline. The leading character is pregnant and not by the hero! It was a different twist that added another human layer to the Marietta puzzle. I liked Marly, insecurities and all. The story between marly and het mom was almost stronger than the romance. Lots of family dynamics on both sides. Also loved the character of FLY, he really felt right for Marietta. I'm reading the whole series, and it was nice to read about different places in the town, other than the chocolate shop.

The bad: There are some leaps in this book that come out of nowhere. They are barely speaking, nothing physical has happened between them, and she decides to suddenly sleep with him. Then she does a complete turn around and suddenly trusts him, but for no apparent reason. DISCLAIMER: I'm a prude. I'm ok with sex scenes if they fit into the story, and make sense for the overall story. The last sex scene in this, is a bit much for me. It felt gratuitous, and really cheapened the book for me. Sad, because it was totally unneeded.

Overall: This book is good, deals with heavy subject matters and you feel the emotion. With a few tweaks it could be stellar, but the author has crafted a solid story in keeping with the series.

HASH(0x8db6cdf8) von 5 Sternen ~!~ A short story that is also short on content ~!~ 24. Juni 2014

In the beginning, I enjoyed reading this short book. The further I got into it, I began to scratch my head and say "huh?". The reasons that the h has for avoiding the H was a little silly and blown way out of proportion for an intelligent adult. Then when they actually get together, I was again left scratching my head and saying "huh?. It just felt that there was so very much information missing such as: When did she feel this way? Why did she feel this way? Why did she make the decision to come to him?

I know this is a short story, but I have read many stories this short and even some that are quite a bit shorter, that felt much more complete than this.
It does however, have a nice HEA ending.

HASH(0x8db702f4) von 5 Sternen A Book to Fall in Love With 20. Juni 2014

Just slightly more erotic than sweet, this is a book to read when you need a"happy" story that is connected, clearly and obviously, to other happy ending stories. While I'm not sure I would recommend it to my mom, I am sure a few of my friends would love it, and even maybe a couple of my sisters.
"The Substitute Bride" is actually about three substitutions in weddings. Each couple has challenges ahead, but for the moment, the emphasis is on getting to "I do". The author has a wonderful grasp of human emotion and the mysterious things that provide the drive for all of us. Above all, in this story, she is doing an examination of the things that drive the relationship between a mother and her daughter. And all the things that these two types of people do to each other in their efforts to define themselves without damaging the image the other has of them.
I adored Marley from word one, but I found myself thinking a lot about my mother as I "met" Angelina and got to know her better. I'm pretty sure the author had no intention of causing such introspection when she started to write, but I found myself thinking about the relationship I have with my own mother.
The book is part of a series. I highly recommend it, and suspect I feel the same way about the other books in the group.

HASH(0x8db69a68) von 5 Sternen Mother-Daughter Dynamics gives this story universal appeal 19. Mai 2014

Journalist Marly Akers' upbringing was what some would call strict. At the age of 17, her mother had found herself pregnant, abandoned, and trapped. So, in order to make sure that that never happened to her daughter, she laid out stringent expectations, and bestowed harsh consequences for not meeting those expectations. Now, nine years after leaving home to start the life her mother always wanted, Marly is back in Marietta...pregnant and abandoned.

Drake Everett has always been good at playing a part. The cocky sports star. The class clown. The careless playboy. Before, however, his act was always to cover up the dark truth about his dysfunctional family. Now that the act is no longer needed, can he convince the only woman who has ever mattered that he is not playing a part? Or will his attentions only leave her feeling trapped?

When looking at the relationship between Marly and Angelina, it is hard not to draw comparisons to "Sweet Home Alabama" (movie, not song). Angelina loves Marly, she really does, but she doesn't want her to repeat her mistakes. It was really hard to like Angelina, but you can't like every character, and she serves a huge purpose to Marly's growth.

Drake was a bit difficult to get on board with. I felt that his character was treated more as a secondary character than a hero. His character was not fleshed out as much as I would have liked, but the parts that I did see were admirable.

The supporting characters were a split, in my opinion. Fly was awesome. He will remind readers of every dream of a perfect grandfather they have ever had. Robin, on the other hand, was annoying. I tried to find her sense of humor endearing, but it just came off ill-timed and self-serving. That may have been the point of the author, though. There really are people out there in real life that just can't help but be this way. There is nothing really malicious about them, so they still have genuine friends, but those friends probably groan every time they open their mouths

Overall, the mother-daughter relationship is the jewel of this book. It is real and proves that mothers and daughters don't have to have perfect relationships to love each other.

HASH(0x8db6ce58) von 5 Sternen It was okay, not real thrilling... or something that you will remember long after the story ends, but just okay. 26. Juli 2015

I was so torn over this book. I loved the whole concept of the story line, but then again.....something just felt off. One minute Marley didn't want anything to do with Drake, and the next she's spilling her guts to him. It was like this on again and off again relationship between the two of them, throughout this whole story. Same thing with Marley and her mother. One minute Marly is cowering like a child, the next she's standing up to her, then the next she's back to cowering again. Drake was okay, but I felt like he was trying a bit to hard to make something happen between the two of them.

It felt like Marley hadn't grown up as much as she'd like to think she had. It's no wonder Evan chose the other woman over her. Not that I think he was such a great person. Really? I mean; who gets a woman pregnant and then proposes marriage to her, only to walk away a few days before the wedding is to take place? And what's worse...he goes on with all the same marriage plans He and Maley had set forth, but he ends up married to someone else. He doesn't even seem to care about Marly or their child, and I find that very disturbing oin so many levels.
I did however like some of the secondary characters, like: Joe the older gentleman that worked in the newspaper office, and Fly.
