The 4th edition of this outstanding reference book on stepping motors was published early in 2002. Due to its continuing popularity, a paperback edition is now also introduced. This significantly updates this introductory text which will enable the reader to appreciate the essential characteristics of stepping motor systems, and to understand how these characteristics are being exploited in the continuing development of new motors, drive and controllers. Stepping motor technology is well established and used for motion control, notably for computer peripherals but wherever digital control is employed. Acarnley's text is widely known and used; the new edition adds coverage of many new applications.
As an embedded software type with no particular experience with motor control, this book provides a nice introduction to stepper motors. A quick reading, without trying to understand all of the detailed mathematics, gave me the information I needed to get going. Further, it is good to know that the details are there when I need them (and have the time to understand them).

Good book on the basics and math models behind the system, but it needs to be updated. There are a variety of anti-resonance patents and methods developed over the past couple decades, but little is said about that. Microstepping dominates modern stepper design, but that seems to be missing completely.

It is an Excellent book for all levels. It starts with good introduction to the theory of stepping motors and goes into the math of torque development, addresses the resonance and instability of the stepping motors. Good buy. Ramesh
