The notorious, radical survival guide to living free as a revolutionary from one of the greatest activists of the 20th century.

In 1970, infamous activist Abbie Hoffman sat in Cook County jail, awaiting what would become known as the Trial of the Chicago Seven. Hoffman and six conspirators were prosecuted by the US government for their part in anti-Vietnam War and counterculture protests outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It was in jail that Hoffman would begin to write Steal This Book.

Labelled by publishers as a book that would "end free speech" and causing scandals with its advice on how to get free food, housing, transportation, medical care, and more, as well as how to run a guerrilla movement, Steal This Book is a revolutionary's manual to "survival in the prison that is Amerika." Hoffman criss-crossed the country, ferreting out alternative ways of getting along in America—some illegal, and all radical—using his own decades of experience in living and fighting underground. Split into three sections to Survive! Fight! and Liberate!, Steal This Book captures the spirit of those years, describing actions and techniques that were already in use in all 50 states and sharing them with the masses.

This edition gives you a window into the movements of the sixties and seventies. While many of the holes in the system which Hoffman exposes have since been plugged up, the spirit of revolution, the dedicated to undermining injustice, and the earnestness of activism remain—in this book and in activism today.

Abbie Hoffman (1936-1989) was an American political and social activist, anarchist, and revolutionary who co-founded the Youth International Party ("Yippies"). He was arrested and tried for his role in protests that led to violent confrontations with police during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Hoffman continued his activism into the 1970s, and remains an icon of the anti-war movement and the counterculture era.

Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book" is generally a survival guide on how to live in the U.S. that is divided into 3 parts. The first chapters on how to get free stuff is brilliant. Some ideas in order to gain free service or items area so ironic, you'd probably not think of it yourself. In section two, Hoffman describes how to take action against oppression and what to prepare for. Bomb making, first aid, and the introduction to new common sense is delivered straight from the mind of Hoffman. The third section is the shortest, but if you happen to live in the big urban and metropolitan areas, it locates address and phone numbers on where to get free stuff in a more specific sense overall toward the book. Even if "Steal This Book" is mainly outdated, it comprises on a guide to a life in the U.S. and words of wisdom he used and recommends.

if it hasn't been ended already. "A Handbook of Survival and Warfare for the Citizens of the WoodStock Nation." Abbie Hoffman does not only provide the reader with a (outdate, but still worthwhile) method of survival, by rebelling against the corrupt politics and media of Amerika, but also provides a forshadowing of what is to come.
As times continue, the lines between the system and the people begin to blur. The first amendment is being challenged in the DeCSS trial, where the MPAA feels it is right to sue over the fact that you're not using THEIR product to watch DVDs. I'm not sure if Hoffman ever predicted this as beign a reprecussion of the system and it's power, but it is certainly a sign (and definitely not a good one) that the government wants more and more control over what we do, as well as the fact that the government and corporate america seem to be slightly blurry as to where one ends and the other begins.
Abbie Hoffman provides many ingenius (and educational, might I add) ways in which you can survive on your own and spread information. There is a full section on guerilla warfare, as well as bomb construction, drugs, and how to steal stuff (including..of course, stealing this book..hehe). I recommend this book for anyone who has (ever) felt that their first amendment rights are being infringed on. By not allowing literature like Steal This Book, publishers are infringing on the first amendment rights of an american citizen, an issue that has become more and more prevelant as time goes by.
The discussions included in this book include (but are not limited to) free food, free land, free medical care, education, and more. There is in-depth discussion of using things to your advantage.

Broke my heart when Abbie left this world. Fills me with joy, to see his book back in print. Tough to steal it over Amazon.com, though Hoffman probably could have found a way. Instead, I nearly bought the super deluxe, library edition. (When did we get a hankering for hording ?) Nope. I'm buying a handful of paperback versions instead ... enough for my students to steal ! Blessings all ... What a long, strange trip its been !

...but don't let that minor detail keep you from steal-- er, I mean buying this book. Hoffman is a rebel with the cause of bringing down the establishment that he feels is corrupted, evil and oppressive. Most of the phone numbers and addresses in this book are severely out of date, but there is loads of still useful information in "Steal This Book". Harmless methods of obtaining free food, furniture, and clothing are described, as well as some innovative shoplifting techniques are described within. Hoffman even touches briefly on guerilla warfare and bomb-making, etc... Abbie was about freedom, and this book contains some very intriguing methods of exercising your freedom as an Amerikan citizen, whether the pigs like it or not.
