Kurzbeschreibung

Welcome to the wondrous world of statistics and probability! This informal book will pick you up at the very beginning and gently guide you through the core concepts of probabilistic mathematics. It carefully explains the basic ideas and shows you how to apply them to a vast number of diverse situations. If you're looking for a dry textbook, you are in the wrong place. This book is all about understanding and applying and applying and applying ...

After closely examining the multiplication rule and its applications, including the dreaded at-least-problems, it goes on to show how the binomial distribution works, what astonishing things you can do with the expected value, what's so great about the Poisson distribution, how to solve statistical problems using geometry and what all the fuss with Bayes' theorem is about. As a plus, the final chapter provides a quick peek into further statistical concepts such as Markov chains, standard deviation and standard error, Chi-Square and cellular automatons.

Besides demonstrating how the concepts work, the many bits of applications, the statistical snacks, cover a wide and diverse range of topics: monkeys on a typewriter, multiple choice tests, missile accuracy, collecting stickers, fair games, quantitative linguistics, space probe communication, soccer, tired colleagues, drunk drivers, immigrants and crime, pirates and global warming and many more.

From the author of "Physics! In Quantities and Examples" and the series "Great Formulas Explained".

Get to know mathematics from a new perspective!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good value for the money and an enjoyable read 21. August 2013
Von The Gypsy Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I agree with the other reviewer's comments that this book is definitely worth getting. Additionally, the formal description of the book is quite accurate in describing the books contents. The only reason I didn't give it a five-star rating (and this is more a personal quirk of mine than any really objective standard) is the number of errors in the text. Although the primary errors are in the use of English, and overwhelmingly in the introduction, I found them a little off-putting. Examples: Intend mistakenly used for intent, proof for prove, infinitive for infinite, "does not need to finite," the quite common it's for its, "it hope" for "I hope," and so forth. As far as I could see, there was only one error in the numbers used in the many examples, and that error was fairly recognizable.

Anyway, with that off my chest, I would definitely recommend the book to anyone interested in learning or reviewing the basics of probability (a more accurate description of the examples given than "statistics"). It includes the use of multiplication for independent events, the binomial distribution, the Poisson distribution, geometrical solutions to probability questions, Bayesian analysis, power functions, and so forth. All the examples are clear, enlightening, well chosen, and written often with just a touch of good humor. Among the many positive elements was the author's explanation of conditional probability (under the common term of Bayesian analysis). The principles of such analysis are fairly straightforward, but are often described in other texts in ways that are not very helpful. This author's explanation and use of diagrams to help analyze the examples should allow anyone who reads the text to be able to work such problems easily in the future, with no more confusion.

If you're interested at all in such subjects, go for it and enjoy.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Helpful book with lots of examples 30. Juli 2013

Even though I skipped three of the seven chapters (didn't need them for class), the book turned out to be a great help. The explanations are good and there are a lot of examples from easy to hard, including some more exotic ones. Certainly a good pick if you struggle with statistics. Plus, you can't argue with the price.

However, in my opinion a few of the examples were "too much" for a beginner's book, they can make it a tough read. And the illustrations could be better. But that's something I can live with, I'd still recommend the book.

I have been teaching statistics for over 20 years and Statistical Snack gave me some new and innovative way of introducing complex concepts in a very understandable way. Excellent read!

4.0 von 5 Sternen nice and easy 29. August 2013

Ok, so the subject is not that easy but the author has made a good effort to make the subject matter interesting and 'real world'. Statistics can become very abstract very quickly, so it is refreshing to read a different approach.

As with any text book it is ever so slightly dull unless statistics is your keen interest, however, it does what it says and breaks down this subject into neat snacks and feeds them gently to the reader.

If you are learning or want to learn statistics then this would be a useful volume.
