Kurzbeschreibung

After two years together, Alex has been dreading the inevitable moment when Damon learns the truth: that Alex is a shifter, part of a small percentage of the population able to switch genders at will. Thanks to a forced implant, though, Alex is suddenly static — unable to shift — and male. Overnight, he’s out to a world that neither understands nor tolerates shifters . . . and to his heterosexual boyfriend.

Damon is stunned to discover his girlfriend is a shifter, and scared to death of the dangers the implant poses to Alex’s health. He refuses to abandon Alex, but what about their relationship? Damon is straight, and with the implant both costly and dangerous to remove, Alex is stuck as a man.

Stripped of half his identity and facing serious physical and social ramifications, Alex needs Damon more than ever, but he doesn’t see how they can get through this.

Especially if he’s static forever.

This book’s basic premise was certainly very original. So original, in fact, that I had trouble categorizing it. m/m? m/f? trans*? GFY? Static is all of those things, but at the same time, neither category fits perfectly. No more than Alex fits into one category or the other—or let’s rather say he fits all and none at the same time. Imagine coming home and your significant other suddenly is a stranger. Mind-boggling, isn’t it? That’s what happens to Damon. He goes to see his girlfriend Alex and finds a man in her place—a man, however, who, for all intents and purposes, is still Alex, the person Damon fell in love with, except for being, well, a man.
Damon is straight, never felt attracted to men, never even felt compelled to consider the possibility, and he isn’t attracted to male Alex, but—and that’s really a mountainous but—he still loves him. Her. Never mind. Hell, he’s been ready to commit to Alex, in prosperity and adversity, only a few days ago, and if there was ever something like adversity, it’s this, isn’t it? Damon may be confused, but he’s still determined to stand by Alex who needs him now more than ever.
Alex, on the other hand, is just as determined to do right by Damon, and if this means letting him go, he will, even at the cost of his own happiness. After all, being like this—static male, unable to switch genders as he used to, needed to in order to remain sane—will kill him sooner or later, if the implant doesn’t cripple or kill him first. How could he engulf the man he loves in his own misery? And even if he risked Damon’s and his own heart by believing Damon’s sincerity, how can they make their relationship work under such drastically changed conditions?

Darum geht’s:

I've always been an open-minded person when it comes to people's sexual preferences. I'm curious enough to read romances of all kind, gay, lesbian, transsexual, hetero, every color of the rainbow. But being able to shift between genders, well that idea blew even my mind. I was immediately hooked and simply HAD to read this book.

I can still say that it is a wonderful idea and I wish there would be more books about these kind of shifters. Maybe it could become a trend like werewolves or other shifters. But in the end, the story was a bit lacking and I can't give a very high rating even though this time I really wish I could.

When Damon finds out that his girlfriend Alex is a now static male shifter, his world is turned upside down. Witt has created a world where homophobia has risen to a whole new level: shifter-phobia. Just as many people have problems understanding why a man would be attracted to another man, now they can't see how a person can be both, male and female.

Alex' parents try to eradicate this error by forcing a spinal implant upon their "son". They don't seem to have ever listened to him explain because the gender is not a matter of the physical shift but rather of feeling. Some days, Alex' brain tells him that he's a female, sometimes he feels male and sometimes both. Reading about all those details was highly fascinating and I loved it.

But it was hard for me to get into the depressed, alcoholic figure of Alex. I guess I favored his boyfriend Damon whom I could relate to much better. The plot was very simple, focusing on Alex and his condition and whether it can be turned around and what it'll mean for his relationship.

HASH(0x94b91c60) von 5 Sternen Dark and dramatic yet beautiful in a different sort of way. 14. Januar 2014
Von Tams (TTC Books and more) - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
* Review based on an ARC copy of the re-release manuscript coming January 20th 2014 *

The terms ‘Shifter’ and ‘Static’ are used within the context of this novel as a metaphor. A shifter is someone who can change gender at will. Imagine if you will, within our society today, if you are a bi-sexual or transgender person how fantastic it would be to change your body type as easily as you change your clothes. Now imagine having that ability stolen from you with a forced implant that blocks the shift, locking you into a body you want to crawl out of half the time.

Damon and Alex have been dating for two years, never taking that next step. Every time Damon approaches Alex about marriage, she shuts him down. Love is not the issue here, I’m afraid. You see Alex is a shifter, able to change gender at will. And Damon is a static, unable to change his sex and unaware that his girlfriend is a shifter. When Alex’s family, the type of family that picks the parts of the bible they want to wield like a sword and ignores every other part, drugs him and forces an implant that will block his shifting abilities; Alex is certain he is going to lose Damon. This is the very reason Alex never told Damon the truth about herself, for fear of losing the person she loved the most.

The majority of the story is spent with Alex coming to terms with the possibility that he may never be able to shift again. At times, he wants to crawl out of his own skin. His brain and his soul still shift to his female form, but now his body cannot adapt, and it’s driving him mad. Alex is having to learn to live every aspect of his life as a man. He’s still madly in love with Damon, he’s just not sure if Damon can still love him as a he. Alex has only ever been with men, wheter he was a male or female, but Damon is certifiably straight. Or is he?

All the while Alex is coming unglued inside and out, Damon is wrestling personal demons of his own. He will not abandon Alex, but he is having a little trouble reconciling his growing feelings for his girlfriend, that can only now be his boyfriend. There is a lot at stake for both men. Will Alex find a way to have the implant removed? And what if he can’t, will Damon still want to be with him if he can never be she again?

I loved everything about this book. It made me stop and think, is this what Transgender people live with everyday? Being stuck in a mans body when everything inside you feels feminine? Witt really conveyed Alex’s emotional distress perfectly. And to watch Damon falling in love with Alex as a man all over again was priceless and beautiful. At times the story was very dark, but it fit within the context perfectly.

Dark and dramatic, but kind of beautiful in a different sort of way. I highly recommend this book. Even if you don’t normally read this genre, I think you would still enjoy the storyline in this book.

HASH(0x94b57054) von 5 Sternen A rating.... 20. Januar 2014
Von Smitten with Reading - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
My Review:
What a completely original, completely creative, completely eye-opening story. Wow, I'm a little overwhelmed with this book. From page one, it sucked me in and I truly could not set it down until I was done.

Alex...wow, he/she was an amazing character. For the rest of the review, I'm going to refer to Alex as him because that was the gender he was in most of the book.

Alex hasn't had an easy life...mainly because of his mom and step-dad's completely wrong and amoral viewpoints on shifters. In this world shifters shift between male and female. Everything shifts...physical as well as mental. When these shifter are male, they are fully male and vice versa. It's when they can't shift that things become touchy because they aren't right. Society, for the most part, doesn't understand that so the medical community has created implants that keep the person from shifting. It's dangerous and inhibiting and for Alex it's unimaginable until it's forced on him.

The author did a truly amazing job capturing the emotional turmoil that Alex is facing. Not being able to shift ever again is torture for him...to the point where there are moments when death is preferable. Throughout the entire book, my heart hurt for him. He's suffered through so much and has made a decent life for himself where most everyone knows him as female Alex, including his boyfriend of two years, Damon. Because of the issues in the past, only a very few people know that Alex is a shifter including Damon, but when he's stuck in his male form, there's no hiding the fact from society anymore.

This is a book that is so difficult because as I read it I became so much more aware about the discrimination in our society about this same thing. There is a transgender character in the book named Tabby. She's never had the ability to shift because she is a static, but she is the closest person Alex has who understands what he's going through. Seriously, great skills from the author here capturing all the layers of emotion and turmoil.

Then there's Damon (this is very slightly spoilery here)....the boyfriend who never knew that his girlfriend was also a male. I think I enjoyed his side of the story the best as he came to realize that he truly was in love with the person Alex was inside. Although they've always had a very sexual relationship, he is only attracted to women. I don't think he would have stuck around long enough to see things through if Alex hadn't been so lost when this all happened. But I'm so glad that he did because watching his transformation and the levels of their relationship mature was truly beautiful.

It's a great story and even though this is a fictional, sci-fi world, it all felt so real. There may not be shifters in our society, but we definitely have people who feel like this everyday. It was an eye-opening read and a beautiful story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

HASH(0x94b92600) von 5 Sternen You know and love someone emotionally and physically as one sex 20. April 2015

A very interesting read. I was curious about how Damon would react to finding out that Alex, his girlfriend, is now stuck as a guy. How would that work? You know and love someone emotionally and physically as one sex, and then presto, they are the opposite sex. Damon is straight, and now the love of his life, Alex, is a guy. Does that really change who Alex is, and what he/she means to you? If you are a straight man, can you have sex with the person you love who is now physically the same sex as you? How would that work? Thought provoking, and insightful. Definitely recommended.

HASH(0x949a4240) von 5 Sternen Very Unique Premise 4. Februar 2015
Von Mandy Rosko - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This was a very interesting book and just the kind that I could barely put down until it was finished. The only reason why I didn't finish this book in one sitting was because I had work to do, but otherwise, it was done in two days. I haven't read anything like this since Luna, and there wasn't a romance in that book, and neither was there the idea of being a shifter of genders either.

The idea of a shifter who switches genders was really interesting. Nevermind werewolves or werecats or dragons or whatever. This idea made the discrimination Alex faced seem so much more real world than anything else that could be thought up. I learned a lot about gender identity just by reading this, and the strange passive aggressive things people can say or do to make others feel threatened, even without talking to them or touching them.

Also, this seems as much a story about Damon as it is about Alex. Alex is forced into one body, and might never get the chance to get out of it, and his straight boyfriend goes through a journey of his own along the way. He slowly, over the course of the entire book, comes to realize that he was in love with a person, and not a woman, which was wonderful, and all the little steps they moved forward, back toward each other, was just heart jerking.

For example, When Damon is getting ready to sleep on the couch, he beats himself up because he'd wanted to marry Alex at one time. If he'd wanted her in sickness and in health, for better or for worse, then what's he doing on the couch when Alex is in the bedroom alone? When he gets up to go into the room he used to share with Alex as a woman, and climbs under the covers to lie down and curl up beside Alex as a man, they both let out a huge sigh of relief, and so do I as the reader :3

I think this one is a keeper. I'll be coming back to it from time to time. Highly recommended. Anyone who wants a great romance will get it, and learn something about gender identity while they're at it.

HASH(0x949a43d8) von 5 Sternen How do I love thee? And why? 24. Dezember 2012
Von Fiona McGier - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Verifizierter Kauf
I absolutely loved this book. I read lots of erotic romances, and usually don't care much for M/M. I don't have a problem with it, it's just not that interesting to me. I began this book thinking I might not finish it. Instead I was captured from the first chapter by the intriguing questions raised by the characters' dilemma. What is it you fall in love with, when you love someone? Is it their body? Of course that's part of it, but what else? The thousand and one habits and peculiarities that make that person the one you love? Are those changed if the person who was female is now male? Or does he still possess everything (except anatomy) that you love?

I've read that when you first fall in love, you think the object of your affection has no flaws. When you are deeper into love, you love that person in spite of their flaws. But when you have progressed to mature, lasting love, you have to admit that you love that person BECAUSE of their flaws, because without them it wouldn't be the person you love. Damon has to come to terms with what he originally perceives as an insurmountable flaw. That he does and the relationship that grows, made me laugh at some points and cry at others.

I put this book down and immediately looked for people I could talk to about it. I thought about it for days, and I'm still talking about it. I bought 2 paperbacks to give to loved ones for Christmas. Give it a chance, and ask yourself, what is the nature of love?
