UTTERLY FASCINATING

This book is JUST AWESOME and a must for any real Star Wars fan. To see how the entire saga came about and all the changes and the last minute rush jobs to be ready for filming. Well, it was utterly fascinating. The evolving of the characters, futuristic machines and weapons, and who changed what and the some of the chances that were taken and pulled off were as exciting and inspiring as the movies themselves. Like Solo saying I know when Leia says she loves him, was a chance taken and it worked and therefore it was used. The expression "I have a bad feeling about this." ended up in all 3 films. Some people think books and reading are/is boring. Not with this book. A fantastic read. Get it - you won't be sorry.

I've always loved Star Wars. Who does not? But to tell you the truth I'm sometimes overwhelmed by all the tie-in books that come out.
Except this one. To have all three screenplays along with running commentary from George Lucas and all other major players in this empire- building process just blew my mind away.
To be let in on the development of the characters and the events that make up one of the modern classics of the cinema is too much of a good thing. Also to get glimpses of the Star Wars that might have been at a story and character level is a unique treat.
Add to that the fact that you get three complete screenplays (with the special edition modifications also included) for the price of a trade paperback and the decision to get it is a no-brainer for any aficionado of Star Wars, Science Fiction or screenwriting in general.

This Is the best book I've EVER read, I used to hate Star Wars and I didn't really even like sci-fi, but now I LOVE Star Wars and I've dedicated my life to the study of science fiction. The book changed my perspective, in fact, it changed my life! It even encouraged me to sell all my possessions and adopt a monastic life of CELEBACY!

This is an excellent item, and I highly recommend it to any Star Wars fan who's interested in finding out some background information concerning the conception and development of the original trilogy of films. This book presents the screenplays to all three films - 'A New Hope', 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi' - and alongside the screenplays are lots of quotes from people involved in the making of these movies. The main contributor is George Lucas, who explains the genesis of his ideas and how they evolved over time. As such, we learn about the different early versions of the Star Wars saga ... and what might have been. All of this is fascinating stuff.

Various other contributors are interviewed and quoted, such as the director of 'Empire' and the producer of the Special Edition films. These individuals provide insight into the film-making process. Overall, this is a highly insightful and entertaining read. While the screenplays for these films can be purchased separately, it's the annotations that make this book special. I enjoyed reading about, for instance, Lucas' thoughts on what the Force is, on how he first imagined the Jedi, and so much more.

I paid under £3 for this item - which was a real bargain. As I review, it's priced in excess of £60! It's simply not worth that price. As such, I suggest looking for a more reasonable seller.

Laurent Bouzereau's "Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays" features the theatrical scripts of the Original "Star Wars" Trilogy along with annotations from George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, Ralph McQuarrie and others. Bouzereau carefully combed details from early drafts and script treatments, explaining how ideas were formed, discarded, reused, and referenced later. He also includes notes for the Special Editions of the films and how the studio went back to reshoot or recreate certain scenes that didn't make the original cuts. Bouzereau writes, "It all began in 1973 when Lucas sat down and wrote a forty-page outline entitled 'Journal of the Whills' about 'Mace Windy, a revered Jedi Bendu of Ophuchi,' as told by 'C.J. Thorpe, Padawaan learner of the famed Jedi'" (pg. viii). Though the prequel trilogy had not yet appeared, some of these details further demonstrate how Lucas tied those films to his early ideas. Of course, J. W. Rinzler now has three coffee table books complete with script details and production artwork/photographs that detail the making of each of the three films in greater detail. Further, Rinzler, along with Mike Mayhew and George Lucas, adapted Lucas's first draft into a graphic novel for Dark Horse Comics. That said, as the first draft of "Star Wars" history, this book will remain of interest for fans who want to know more about the franchise's history.

For any fans of the Star Wars films and indeed any budding writers, this book is excellent. As a guide to the art of rewriting it is a gem. It shows that the first draft of any work is always the worst and the rewriting of any draft, be it its first or fifth version is the key to producing any successful written work.
In addition, the fact that the book was written before the notorious Prequels were produced was fascinating as you could see various unused elements from the eariler versions incorporated into Episodes 1 to 3 and at the same time it will no doubt offer hints as to what we may see in the upcoming Disney productions.

First, let me just say that I am not a huge Star Wars fan. It's cool, but I don't go nuts over it and I don't study ever nuance of the storylines or dissect the films frame by frame to discover flaws or hidden insider jokes. So why did I purchase this book? It was a gift for someone who IS a Star Wars nut who DOES, in fact, know everything there is to know about these movies. He left a copy of this very book at my house years ago. I have since moved away and the house has been demolished. With it, presumably, was his copy of this book. I remembered this book when a news story came out a month or so ago stating an old "first draft" of one of the original trilogy films was discovered and took it upon myself to replace the lost book. It was a huge surprise and a greatly appreciated gesture. So my thanks go to Amazon and the seller in question for making this possible. Thanks!
