Every Star Wars fan knows that Slave I is Boba Fett's tricked-out bounty-hunting ride. But how many know about its short-lived successor, Slave II? And what average fan has ever laid eyes on an Imperial MT-AT walker? (Imagine a huge, arachnid AT-AT.) Heck, most SW buffs will even try to tell you that Vader's Super Star Destroyer is the biggest bad-boy this side of the Battle of Endor. Not likely: Emperor Palpatine's probably got bigger shuttlecraft on his 17.5-kilometer-long Eclipse-class ship.

Bill Smith's illustrated Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels--a veritable blue book for the Star Wars universe--lets you kick the tires on all these ships and more. Researching not just the movies, but also Star Wars novels, comics, computer games, et al., Smith tirelessly details 100 different ways to get around--and dish out destruction--in the land of sandcrawlers and speeders. Descriptions of familiar vehicles ("That's no moon... it's a space station!") blend seamlessly with the more obscure (can you name six kinds of TIE fighters?). This is one showroom-floor tour you won't want to miss out on. --Paul Hughes

As a SW fan I expected to see every SW ship and vehicle in existence and I this book almost fills that expectation. As a modeler I hoped to see blueprints for each ship but good plans are scarce in this book, most ships only have 2-view drawings of them. Most detailed plans are published before in West End's SW source books. Furthermore, information of the ships and vehicles if often erroneous or inadequate. I would expect to find the size of a vessel if nothing else. If you are looking for a modeling reference this is not the book for you but if you are a SW fan this might be worth the price.

Seems like most of the SW community just loves this book. I quite disagree, and there are several reasons for that.

1. Choice of craft
This guide is not the least "essential". Amongst the covered vessels there are exots like the AT-PT, MT-AT, Amphibion, Chu'unthor, Coral Vanda, the Dath Star Prototype, Enforcer One, Hapan Battle Dragon, Hornet Interceptor, Hosk Station, Hyperspace Marauder, Ithullian Ore Hauler, Marauder Starjacker, Master Arca's Ship, Nebulon Ranger, Xizor's Virago, Star Home, Starlight Intruder, TIE Crawler, and a bunch of other crappy ships which you will never have heard of because they have only been mentioned in one single sentence in one single comic or book.

On the other hand, essential craft like the TIE Advanced, TIE Phantom, Assault Gunboat, Assault Transport, Missile Boat, Escort Shuttle, Loronar Strike Cruiser, T-41 Starchaser, T-Wing, and many others, are missing. A book that calls itself an "essential guide to vehicles and vessels", and doesn't even have all the fighters from the X-Wing and TIE Fighter computer games, is just making a joke out of itself.

2. Lack of Detail
Length, width, height, mass, speed, armor, shields, armament, crew, cost, etc? Where is that data?
Where is the point in making nice sketches of starships but leaving out the hard facts? After reading this book, you'll be right as clueless as before.

3. Wrong and/or inconsistent ship naming
If you are trying to look up a special ship in this book, you'll have a pretty hard time finding it.
Although the vessels are sorted alphabetically, the erroneous naming of some of them makes that advantage null and void.

One of the reasons I think it is good is because of the many vehicals that are in the novels are found in here, and it really helps you see in your mind, what's going. But even though it has a lot of vessels, it doesn't have all of them. There were a few ships I was really curious about seeing and they weren't in there. Also, many of us who buy the books already know alot about the movie vehicals, like the landspeeders, and jawa sandcrawlers. I for one would like to see another book come out with all the vehicals they missed, inclueding those ships in the upcoming Star Wars movies. It really is a great book though. You can learn about the newer fighters and large ships, how they came to be, and what book or movie they were in. There are technical drawings that have each part described labled. It can really help to clear up the fog the novels can create.

when i purchased the book 1996,there was of course still awhole crowd of starwars fans around the world but being one was more something 'bit freaky...
especially if you where amazed by the Real great starship and construction designs, you would count something like the essential guide as same as the holy book.
the only things to criticise: there often no descriptions of coulors, and alas no data about length etc.(so as I was building An X-wing modell i had to research in the Romans(Rouge Squad)).

This book is amazing! A must have for any Star Wars maniac! It describes, in detail, the history and design behind most of the important Star Wars spacecraft. Really, really well drawn composite sketches and explanitive labels. A solid 5 stars, no question!

Never thought it would be so descriptive, but is a must for those in depth reference bounty hunters, a great companion for an encyclopedia, and a good book (Encyclopedia is the first step) for those who want to begin a search For a galaxy far, far away...

i have had the book for awhile now and i would like to say that i have been impressed. Drawing spacecraft of any sci-fi universe is something i do alot. I would like to improve my talent in my art of drawing and I really want to see more drawings of more craft of the Star Wars universe and use 3-d graphics computer hardware and software to render them and then ad much more detail and if there is any Star Wars fans out there on the internet that have done what i would like to do then please email me and I would like to say that there are many more craft-vessels in the Star Wars universe that this neat book did not even begin to illustrate like for instance the episode one movie in the sequence on the amazing world of coroscant with all of those myriad of differenct space-aircraft cruising about. I would almost give my right leg to see atleast drawings of all of the vehicles in that sequence along with the vehicle-vessels on tatooine in the same movie and on planet naboo and blue prints of all of the ships and craft in this amazing book and in other books. so if anyone has any ideas of new ship designs of star wars or even from the star trek universe and designs out of any other sci fiction like maybe earth final conflict or farscape, ds9, etc. please email me soon! I really would like hearing from any of you fans out there in the internet universe.
