Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
Floyd E. Toole studied electrical engineering at the University of New Brunswick and at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London where he received a Ph.D. In 1965 he joined the National Research Council of Canada where he reached the position of Senior Research Officer in the Acoustics and Signal Processing Group. In 1991 he joined Harman International Industries Inc. as Corporate Vice President Acoustical Engineering. In this position he worked with all Harman International companies and directed the Harman Research and Development Group, a central resource for technology development and subjective measurements, retiring in 2007. He is currently a consultant to Harman.
Dr. Toole s research has focused on the acoustics and psychoacoustics of sound reproduction in small rooms, directed to improving engineering measurements, objectives for loudspeaker design and evaluation, and techniques for reducing variability at the loudspeaker / room / listener interface. For papers on these subjects he has received two AES Publications Awards and, for service to the society, the Board of Governors Award. For his achievements he has been recognized with both the AES Silver Medal (1996) and Gold Medal (2013) Awards. He is a Fellow and Past President of the AES, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a Fellow of CEDIA (Custom Design and Installarion Association). He has been awarded Lifetime Achievement awards by CEDIA and ALMA (Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics International). He has recently written a book: "Sound Reproduction: the acoustics and psychoacoustics of loudspeakers and rooms." (Focal Press, 2008)."

He has a clear idea on how things should be done, but is also objective in citing other references of people who's research has led them to other results.
This book is of interest not only to HiEnd-Audio or HiFi-Enthusiasts, but should be 'recommended reading' for sound-engineers and all people working with audio monitors, in places or jobs where quality (still ;-) matters (which seems to be getting rarer these days ... let's forget about most radio and tv-broadcaster in this respect - thanks to 'multiband compression' or 'broadcast signal optimization' in general, let alone MP3 and the like .... anyway...)
So - I can only highly recommend this book which is full of up-to-date references (the first edition from 2008 holds literature references up to 2007), is highly informative and at the same time very well written and easy to read. I don't know of any other book which holds so much in-depth information on this topic.
Congratulations and respect to Floyd Toole.
Almost a research-style book rather than one for an enthusiast / audiophile, although it's very comprehensive & is an impressive tome.
from THE capacity in the field
includes all the newest research on the topic

You will love the book even if you fall in the same as me category of experiencing sound. The book is worth every dime it costs. But I would caution against falling for all the rhetoric with blinders on. Even if it is a gem of a book, a great read to boot (and that is a lot for such a narrowly focused technical publication).
In an easy to read format the book provides the results of decades of research performed by Dr. Toole (with support from other excellent staff) at Harmon International. The results of real research, not just opinions, are hard to come by in the audio field. This book demonstrates what factors are important in loudspeaker response, how loudspeakers fit into rooms, subwoofer and room interactions, and much more.
I've had a copy of the book for several years. I just purchased another copy to be circulated among members of a local audio club. The book would make a great gift for someone you know who is into audio.
