Steven Weyhrich is a family physician practicing in Omaha, Nebraska. He has extensive experience with the Apple II platform, starting with the Apple II Plus back in 1980 through the Apple IIGS in the late 1980s. He wrote articles about the Apple II for a variety of commercial publications before starting on the history of that computer in the early 1990s. He continues to maintain a keen interest in the Apple II. Since it first appeared on the Internet in the mid 1990s, his Apple II History web site has been the standard reference for the story of the Apple II, covering it from its beginnings to its continued life among enthusiasts today. Steven is a board-certified member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In his spare time he occasionally writes music parodies, he's a casual gamer (both old games and new), and a Minecraft enthusiast, designing an Apple II replica in the Minecraft world large enough to walk around in. He has been married since 1986, has II grown children, II dogs and II cats.

The first thing that I noticed when I unpacked the Amazon packaging was the quality feel of this book. Solid and true, with bright white pages and a quality cover showed that the author had applied an Applesque approach to his 'product'.

Steven Weyhrich has run a successful Apple history web site for many years, Ive referred to it many times and his knowledge of the Apple II is excellent. It is this knowledge built over 30 years that has led him consolidate it into this book. It differs from many other Apple books in that it specialises in the Apple II, its history (very common) , its software, hardware and user groups. In fact not only is it a history book but a detailed reference guide to one of the most successful computers ever and the supporting products that kept this machine going for almost 20 years in its various guises. Its 550 pages are well written and indexed. Its also very comfortable to browse and pick up and leave off. The illustrations are numerous and clear, and the time lines that complete each chapter offer a useful reference to keeping chronoligical track of the various sujects under discussion.

This is simply and enjoyable read and an essential piece of detailed research that every Apple II enthusiast needs to own !

Se conoscete il sito apple2history allora questo libro saprà di deja-vu: sì, perché l'autore del libro è lo stesso delle pagine di quel sito, che ha deciso di trasformare in formato cartaceo. La prima parte è veramente interessante, descrivendo le caratteristiche del computer e di come è stato sviluppato l'Apple II, anche se da il lato tecnico non viene approfondito sempre. La seconda parte, che descrive tutto ciò che ruotava intorno al mondo Apple II, è un po' noiosa a volte, espandendo troppo concetti che forse potevano essere descritti un po' più stringatamente. Il libro vale i soldi spesi ed è sicuramente bello da leggere per chi vuole farsi un'idea di un computer che ha fatto storia, ma alle volte sembra più un volume per fan dell'Apple II che di tipo narrativo.

This book is a greatly expanded version of the author's "Apple II history" files which I discovered on Usenet, way back before Eternal September (yes, this is second-order nostalgia). It's a little short on technical details but excels at putting the Apple II in its historical context, with many references to important software and hardware of the day. The book makes for entertaining reading, and the dozens of pictures (hardware, people, magazines, famous ads) are sure to bring smiles of recognition to your face.
