Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Mark Simos, associate professor in songwriting at Berklee College of Music, is a renowned songwriter, composer and tunesmith, teacher and writer. Over four-plus decades, Mark's songs and tunes from imaginary countries have stretched musical boundaries with innovative melodies and harmonies and intricately crafted lyrics, bringing a contemporary sensibility to neo-traditionalist forms. Over one hundred of Mark's compositions have been recorded by artists, including Americana supergroup Alison Krauss and Union Station, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury, and Laurie Lewis. He's co-written with artists/writers such as Australian rock icon Jimmie Barnes, Catie Curtis, and the Infamous Stringdusters' Andy Hall. He's featured on many recordings as fiddler and guitar accompanist, and has recorded an acclaimed song-cycle album, Crazy Faith, and four albums of original and traditional fiddle music. At Berklee, Mark creates innovative curriculum in 360 songwriting, collaboration, guitar techniques for songwriters, and tunewriting, and leads Berklee's American Old-Time Ensemble. He also continues to perform and teach at workshops, camps, festivals, and retreats worldwide.

Von s_lyhne - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This must be the most comprehensive account on songwriting theory out there. But it is not so much the amount of information, tools and techniques that makes this book a gem -- it is the framework in which this information is organized. Simos' compass model of songwriting is just so elegant and usable. I have been studying songwriting theory for a few years now in hope of a more effective songwriting proces, but I must admit that even though I certainly learned many, many useful things, I have also many a time been suffering from decision paralysis. I feel Simos' framework has eased my mind a lot by integrating all of the tools and techniques into a unifying framework.

It's not an easy book, and it probably shouldn't be your first book about songwriting (although the compass model in itself could be excellent for beginners to know about). But if you're seriously interested in songwriting theory, this book is indispensable.

Von Shopper - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is worth more than its selling price and certainly more than the books that specialize in providing laundry lists of random tips and tricks. Instead, this helps you create a full model of how to approach all aspects of songwriting in a systematic way and improve and develop in each of the facets either at once or one by one. Going through the first chapters I found myself nodding a lot ("yes, I do this ALL THE TIME") and I had to concentrate and pay attention when the author is describing how his model works, which was really worth it later on. To me, the best thing about the book is in the fact that it offers a truly comprehensive, highly intuitive system and it's up to me how far I want to take it. I realize now some of my writing habits may be holding me back (and understand how they are holding me back!) and what I can do about it.Highly recommended.

If you are looking for a book that offers readily accessible strategies to aid in the songwriting process this is not the book. However, if you are looking for an academic book to base a music course on or have lots of time to absorb the material and experiment, this book is ideal. As a reference for a working songwriters, the author may wish to consider offering a "laundry-list" on his website. Online media, such as Youtube case-studies or a MOOC would also make the authors thoughtful approach to songwriting strategies connect with a larger audience of songwriting professionals.

Von Donny Danger - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I'm sorry... this book is extremely pedantic and tedious. I usually finish every book I start reading and did my darnedest to try to stick with this, but half-way thorugh I realized it was not going to get better or provide any usefull real life examples or insight. The guy's overall premise or conceptual framework definitely seems valid... but the execution was excruciating and overly academic. I would recommend Pat Pattison's stuff instead.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Fresh Insights and Language for Song Crafting 23. Juli 2016
Von John Chisum (@revchiz) - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Simos' thorough approach to songwriting is unlike most other songwriting books as he takes the craft to new technical depths with fresh insights and language in his "360º Approach." This is a book for those willing to invest their time to learn excellent strategies "from stem to stern" in the real craftsmanship of songs - very well done and a fine addition to the already state-of-the art Berklee Press library of greats (Pattison, Perricone, etc). We'll look for more great things to come from Simos. John Chisum, Managing Partner/Nashville Christian Songwriters
