One mistake could lead to capture and entrapment in a marriage Anne-Sophie Duncombe would rather die than endure. Her only choice is a radical scheme — a life of humility and disguise, a life of exile.

Wilhelm Montegue, the Earl of Devon, is insane. At least that’s what everyone says. But who could blame them? He’s a tormented war hero surrounded by scandal. And his unmentionable “condition” keeps him confined to his country home. His only saving grace is his brilliant mind and unquestionable talent for composing beautiful music.

When a new housemaid is hired at Rougemont, Lord Devon is perplexed to find himself fascinated by her. He knows the exquisite beauty is keeping secrets, but her siren's voice draws him in and he can't resist the intoxicating scent of danger surrounding her.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Moriah Densley sees nothing odd at all about keeping both a violin case and a range bag stuffed with pistols in the back seat of her car. They hold up the stack of books in the middle, of course. She enjoys writing about Victorians, assassins, and geeks. Her muses are summoned by the smell of chocolate, usually at odd hours of the night. By day her alter ego is your friendly neighborhood music teacher. She lives in Las Vegas with her husband, four children, and two possibly brain-damaged cats. Published in historical and paranormal romance, Moriah has a Master's degree in music, is a 2012 RWA Golden Heart finalist, 2012 National Reader's Choice Award winner in historical romance and '12 NRCA "Best First Book" finalist.

This is one great read. I'm in love with Wil. Well okay…I like Sophia too. Dialogues are very refreshing, cheeky and funny. I'd most definitely read this again…

For once, the characters actually have a relationship outside the bedroom. There is a certain depth in the characters, the story and the writing. No pathos (i love you soo much blabla), but a display of genuine affection. Sophia and Wil connect intellectually, erotically and emotionally - that makes it a refreshing read

5.0 von 5 Sternen What an Amazing Story!! 25. September 2013

Song for Sophia was the first book I have read by Moriah Densley and it was also her debut novel. I must say that this was an amazing novel to debut with because it was outstanding. I couldn't put it down! I have read many Regency/Historical Romances and I can tell that this is going to be a favorite of mine that I will re-read from time to time just to get caught up with the wonderful characters.

In this book we follow Will and Sophia on their adventures of life and love that intertwine with mystery, adventure and of course a dash of romance. Unlike other books of this genre it does not follow the `typical' plot settings. Sophia is a strong, intelligent character whose character depth will leave you craving for more. While Will, who is just as strongly developed is not your typical rake with the same backgrounds and character flaws. Both of them are wonderful stand-alone individuals and when their wittiness and comic moments are together they are the perfect match in every way.

The dialogue between the two main characters is well written and formed. It is quick and witty and allows you to be even more pulled into the depth of these beautiful characters that become more life-like with every page. The story line and plot will keep you turning pages well into the night and there is just enough romance, comedy, wit and mystery to keep you guessing without feeling like the author is just trying to extend the story out.

This book is completely captivating and the characters are developed in such a way that you find yourself hoping you get the chance to meet them one day. I am looking forward to reading many more books from this author and hope that she writes another very soon.

4.0 von 5 Sternen 4 and 1/2 Stars - A Heroine on the Run and a Hero Fighting His Ghosts Make for an Unusual Victorian 28. November 2016

Set in 1867, this is the story of Lady Anne-Sophia Duncombe, a Viscount’s daughter on the run from her father who beat her because she refused to marry the man he selected. She manages to get a job as a maid in the home of Wilhelm Montegue, the Earl of Devon, who everyone thinks is mad. A war hero haunted by scandal, he is brilliant: a musician who composes music in his head; a mind for figures; literate in multiple languages; and can recite from the literature he’s read. (The author tells us later he’s an “autistic savant”.)

Having been a spy, Wilhelm instantly sees through Sophia’s disguise and, when he realizes how bright she is and speaks as many languages as he does, and how attractive he finds her, he tells his aunt “I mean to have her.”

It took me some time to get used to the author’s writing style but once I did, I enjoyed the story and the banter between Wilhelm and Sophie. It seems they are well matched, both geniuses and both strikingly attractive, both exceptionally well read. Seriously, it’s a bit unbelievable, but if you can get over that, the story entertains and the writing is excellent.

Wilhelm makes a bargain with Sophia: he will protect her from whomever she is fleeing if she will pretend to be his mistress, even his wife, as the occasion requires. I suspected he was just getting her used to the idea. Since he makes no demands other than the pretense, she agrees.

The story is intriguing and I couldn’t help become enamored with Wilhelm. Who wouldn’t want a handsome man, the son of a prince, with noble motives and unlimited wealth meaning you only good? When Sophia is attacked by one of their “guests” sent by her, Wilhelm sweeps her, his aunt and his three young nieces, who have come to live with them, to Cornwall. (It’s the only location change in the story.)

At times the phrasing seemed more modern than the Victorian era. But still very clever. (The author is a music teacher and it shows.) One thing to note: This is not a light romance as there is graphic violence (Wilhelm is, after all, a former assassin and he does kill several men). It’s only 290 pages but it felt much longer. I suspect it’s because almost all the scenes were of Sophia and Wilhelm together.

I liked the story well enough to read another by this author.

I must confess to avoiding this book for awhile because of the rave reviews, I've been burnt too many times by 'fake' 5 star reviews. I'm glad I took the chance because I really did enjoy this book. I can see that the author has loads of potential and I liked that the story was different. Her writing style is quirky at times but I'm a fan of that, if done well. Our main characters are interesting because of all their issues. There were a few things that didn't work for me, which have been alluded to in some of the other reviews, for example; the annulment document but overall it was a great story.

I truly, truly liked that this book wasn't riddled with meaningless sex scenes but it did convey loads of sensuality and chemistry between the leads. This is great romance for me and leaves my imagination to do the rest. I wish more authors would try this. I also liked that the H married the h before he slept with her. For me it just works better in historical romance and feels so much more authentic.

I'm really looking forward to reading more by this author.

Wilhelm Montegue, Earl of Devon, started noticing that one of his house maids just did not "fit". For one thing, she was way too beautiful to be in service. For another, she was way too educated. And where would a house maid acquire that genteel inflection in her voice? Then he heard her singing.

Anne-Sophia Duncombe is in hiding. She must remain hidden. She is in danger every moment. She just wants her freedom and some peace, but she discovers that her new employer brings lots of pleasant emotions, but peace is not one of them.

Whew! Turn on the air conditioning. This book is HOT. This book is the ultimate in romance and sensuality. No one, and I mean no one, can write love scenes like Moriah Densley. She does not bore us with plain recitation of where body parts are moved about. You can feel the love, the excitement, the pleasure, the wonder of two hearts joined in simultaneous physical, spiritual and emotional joy.

M. Densley takes us on an adventure fraught with the ultimate highs and the lowest of lows. Her words wrap around our mind and heart, taking us to a new world. She carefully crafts her story, taking us, her readers, on a journey we will never forget. This is a grown up fairy tale, meant to be savored.

My best advice is to stop reading reviews and simply buy this book. I can't remember when I've enjoyed a book so very much, on every level. The writing is superb, the storyline riveting, the characters just about lifelike - in short, everything about this book is terrific. It is an incredibly lovely story, with equally lovely characters. Totally emotionally moving and poignant.

Sophie and Wil are simply perfect for each other and their repartee from beginning to end is simply beyond clever and creative. I do hate to gush, but gush I will about this book. Each successive chapter gets better and better. It runs the gamut from heartwarming to angsty and never lets you get bored or tired of the story. The twists and turns are as delightful as they are unexpected - what a book.

Sophie and Wil both have secrets - and are living with them as best they can. Together they accomplish so much more - and it is a beautiful revelation to watch them come together. This relationship, two wounded people meeting, is just perfectly romantic. The secondary characters are as well drawn as the H and h, and each has an important role to play. Oh my goodness, I loved this book.

The pain of past injuries and hurts leaves scars on both of them, but is so beautifully balanced by the witty dialog and the author's clever humor that a lot of the pain is ameliorated for the reader. This book doesn't keep you in an uncomfortable suspense, but always holds a tantalizing promise of the happy ending this couple so richly deserves.

Sophie is in hiding, having fled from a despicable abusive father. Her disguise has taken the guise of a housemaid and she has obtained a position in the beautiful estate mansion of Lord Devon, a reclusive and possibly insane former military man. Her disguise is successful in that it conceals her true identity, but she is unable to mask her beauty. It is this beauty (and spunky spirit) that attracts men's attention, all of which is unacceptable to her. The footmen harass her, which eventually comes to the attention of Wil, Lord Devon. Let the fireworks begin.

Sparks fly - Wil's anger, Footmen's comeuppance, Sophie's chagrin, Aunt Louise's misgivings and the niece's jealousy. Sophie is promoted from maid to governess and the story is firmly underway. Wil is not exactly in disguise, but he suffers from a mental disorder and is rumored to be mad. Clearly he bears visible physical scars, in addition to his svant autism.

Just as Sophie sees beyond the physical issues, Wil sees beyond her disguise and their relationship begins to build - gradually and beautifully unfolding very naturally. Under the watchful protection of Wil, Sophie begins to learn to trust - and under Sophie's unflinching attention, Wil begins to love. More than that I should not give away. Do yourself a favor - and enjoy this book. There aren't many that are this good!
