Kurzbeschreibung

When his whirlwind life in LA became too much, Liam Barton escaped to Solitude, a Utah ski resort. Not only did Liam leave his career as a gay porn star, he said good-bye to Gael Torres, his costar at Woodspring Manor Entertainment.

Rumors run rampant that Liam is dead. But Gael doesn’t believe the gossip. Knowing something is wrong with Liam, Gael hunts him down to get his answers.

Liam is shocked when Gael turns up in Solitude and takes up residence. To Liam's chagrin, Gael is determined to stick around to help Liam through whatever spooked him enough to run away. As Gael breaks through Liam’s armor, both men begin to realize that no matter what life throws their way, they don’t have to deal with it alone.

Von William R. Hill - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is an entertaining and often informative glimpse into the lives of some hot, gay sex workers. I realize that such a vocation is not all “fun and games,” but still, the very idea of hormonal young men up to their eyeballs in sex with equally beautiful young men is enough to make me gaga. Whatever problems those guys may have, sexual frustration isn’t one of them. I was also pleasantly surprised to find the depiction of a particular sex act that I knew about but had never before encountered in a gay romance novel (or even a sex-romp short story). Lamentably, a majority of U.S. males are physically incapable of pulling it off. I myself would dearly love for someone to perform it on me. If you meet the basic qualifications and would be willing to help me out, please get in touch—immediately. Just kidding.

All kidding aside, my only qualm with this book is its approach to the issue of HIV/AIDS. The authors lend their support to the popular fallacy that, because there are now drugs that may…MAY…keep you alive, “negligible-risk” sex acts are acceptable. I think tender, affectionate gay sex is the most beautiful thing in the world. Nothing interests me more. But when it comes to this disease, any risk above absolute zero is way too high. Many if not most of today’s young gays (who have the most to lose in terms of longevity), woefully underestimate the downsides of living with AIDS. Even though it no longer equates to guaranteed death in short order, the drugs (last I heard) are multitudinous and obscenely expensive, meaning you’d better have excellent health insurance because you can’t afford them on your own. (If you can get them free at some public health clinic, I wouldn’t count on that lasting forever.) And (last I heard) they usually have horrendous side effects, which require yet more drugs to treat. Not to mention all the pain that is attendant. You may be alive, but will you really want to be? And for how long? Some things are worse than death. Like wishing you were, but you’re not.

I have never been so blown away with incredulity as when I heard, years ago, that some gays were intentionally exposing themselves to HIV in order to be in the “in crowd,” as if wrecking their health and risking their lives was some cool new fad. You know, like tattoos, only more irreversible. To quote a friend of mine, “They were thinking with the wrong head.”

I understand that many will scoff at my “paranoia.” But the prospect of a horrifically and permanently diminished quality of life just seems to somehow take the fun out of sex. But hey, that’s just me.

When established porn star Gabriel, aka Gael, first lays eyes on his latest co-star, Lithium, he is taken by surprise with the intense attraction he feels towards the newest recruit to Woodspring Manor. Twink is not his usual type. Twenty-three year old Liam has been in the game for a few years himself, but recently joined the family-style company, with their professional yet friendly atmosphere. His first scene finds him working with Woodspring's most well-loved and respected top and he quickly realises that there is an undeniable connection between them. It's a pity that the gorgeous Gael already has a boyfriend in fellow porn star, Johnny.

Five months after Liam first arrived at Woodspring Manor, an industry scare forces a temporary moratorium on shoots. This also causes the pool-house to be shut up, leaving Liam needing somewhere else to stay, but when receptionist Edie goes to tell Liam and the other guys staying there, no-one can find Liam. During those five months it had become increasingly obvious that Gael was feeling the strain of keeping up appearances with John and their 'relationship' when all he wanted to do was explore what could be between he and Liam.

This was an enjoyable enough story, yet I never managed to become fully invested in it. There seemed to be a bit of a disconnection between the two alternating POVs and some of the chapter transitions felt really abrupt. Teamed with more than a few inconsistencies and contradictions, it stopped me just short of becoming truly immersed in the story. But just because I didn't fully connect with the story doesn't mean others won't completely fall in love with it. I genuinely liked both MCs quite a lot, although I connected most with Liam's POVs. The sex scenes were seriously hot and (and I don't say this too often) it could have done with a couple more. I thought the ending was really well done and very believable. It left me feeling happy and hopeful, but not every issue was miraculously solved. Even with those few things that niggled me, I did enjoy reading Solitude and would say it's worth checking out.

Beautifully written and complex, this story was everything I'd hoped for based on the blurb. Gael and Liam are two very different men, and the way the authors wove them into each other's hearts and lives is pretty amazing.

The writers pulled off some rather difficult topics through skillful use of alternating perspectives and points of view, and by keeping one character's narration just a step behind the other's. It allowed for a bit of mystery and uncertainty that put the reader in the same awkward insecurity as the characters as they fell in love without the benefit of knowing one another's thoughts in real time. Weaving the recent past with the present was unexpected, but it worked beautifully here. As a reader you're not taken out the present yet you're still getting more depth and backstory from events that "just" happened. I can't recall any other books that use this technique, and certainly none that did it this well.

As far as the connection between the two MCs, my impression is that they were equally invested in one another and both of them fell deeply in love. The difference between them came in how they expressed it--one coming from a very loving and healthy emotional background and the other coming from a place that was all kinds of messed up. Naturally, there were some walls that needed to come down.

I loved the the realistic treatment of morally ambiguous topics like porn and prostitution. Really insightful and thoughtful. In sum, this was a gorgeous love story with amazing characters (the secondary characters are just as engaging and interesting as the MCs). 5 star writing on all levels. Creative, engaging, unpredictable, natural dialogue, emotional and great sexual chemistry. Most definitely a keeper.

It’s been way too long since I’ve read a good porn stars/rent boys book and this little gem was just what I needed to get my fix. I think if a porn star romance novel is written well then the readers will not have an issue with the fact that the guys are not monogamous. I have no problem with open relationships, if they are done well, and both parties agree. That is the case here. When you meet on the set of porn shoot, then you are way past complaining about your future boyfriend’s career choices. Fortunately, this story is able to show a couple who can be committed and still perform for the camera.

Yet, this relationship between Gael and Liam is a lot of work. Liam has major history that needs to be dealt with, and Gael is just the guy, with a heart of gold and the patience of saint, to do it. Liam has family drama, not on page fortunately, but the issues from his past forge the path of his future. Even by the end of the book he is not miraculously cured. This, at first, surprised me but after awhile it made sense.

Gael and Liam are both porn stars known as Gabriel and Lithium. When they first meet, Gabriel is under exclusive contract to be in a committed relationship with Johnny, another porn star, and his best friend. That is an act that they agreed would be played out even off camera. That was all fine and good until they both meet someone else and want a chance at a real relationship. Sadly, Liam takes off before that conversation can happen.

Liam is a tragic character. Even at the end of the book, my heart was broken for him. Gael was everything that he needed, plus some. I wasn’t thrilled with his rent boy activities, but I think my reasoning was similar to Gael’s in that it just isn’t safe. But, these are grown men, and they, as a couple, get to make their life choices, and we, as readers, just have to suck it up, Buttercup.

As for the style of the book, I was initially put off by the fact that each chapter was written with alternate POV’s, which isn’t an issue, but the fact that they were in two different time frames took a lot to get used to (Gael in the past, Liam in the present). Fortunately, the guys were finally on the same date around chapter five or so. Not sure why it was written that way, and it was not something I would prefer, but it didn’t take too much away from my enjoyment, especially since things were picking up once they were together. So all in all, it was great porn star/rent boy book and one I highly recommend.

Another ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords.com review

Rating: 4. 25 stars out of 5

Gael Torres met Liam Barton when he costarred in an adult movie for Woodspring Manor Entertainment, the company that employed them as actors for their porn films. Liam, also known as Lithium in the adult film industry, had just signed up with Woodspring although he was already a legend in the porn industry. Gael, known as Gabriel Knightly, was already an established star at Woodspring for over 5 years. In their first scene together, sparks flew, their attraction to each other igniting far past what the script and acting called for.

But obstacles were already in the way to any relationship between them. Gael was living with John, known to his fans as Johnny Depth, and it was well known that they were a popular established couple and good for Woodspring's image and advertising. And Lithium? The secrets he was hiding were huge, and one night he simply disappeared. No note, no phone calls. Gone.

Shocked, Gael waits as the rumors pile up, many saying that Lithium had died, a notion Gael couldn't accept. Determined to find Lithium and extract some answers, Gael still wasn't prepared for what he finds when the missing Lithium is located.

Liam Barton has left his identity as Lithium behind when he fled LA for the ski slopes of Solitude Ski Resort in remote Utah. Haunted by his past, burdened by circumstances he left behind in L.A., Liam craves the peace and isolated existence found in this small town. The only thing he misses is the actor he thinks he can't have, Gabriel Knightly.

When Gael arrives at Solitude to find Liam alive if not completely happy, the shock is almost overwhelming. Gael is determined to get his answers and show Liam the depth of his feelings. Liam has built a fortress to hide behind. Can Gael break down his walls so both men can find the love and relationship they have been dreaming about? Or will Liam's past destroy any chances they might have for a future together?

What a terrific love story! Solitude by Anna Martin and Tia Fielding works on many levels, as a romance, a study of porn actors and their industry, and as a plot storyline that relays the fact that even a HFN commitment takes work and compromises in the name of love. All of these elements and more combine to bring a realistic and even handed look into an industry (and actors) that seldom are given such a non-judgmental point of view. Love and romance are on display in this story in many forms, including the deep love and caring relationship of Gael's parents, great secondary characters whose loving relationship acts as a support and example for those who know them.

Authors Martin and Fielding use characters Liam Barton and Gael Torres to show the different facets to the people who act in porn film and the various types of adult film companies who produce the prodigious amounts of porn filmed each year. It starts off with the company Woodspring Manor Entertainment, a firm whose owners like Preston, take care of their performers, from contracts to health insurance to housing. Woodspring and its owners represent the best of the adult film industry. Among its established stars are Gael (Gabriel Knightly) and Johnny (Johnny Depth), a "couple" favored for their relationship as well as their gorgeous bodies and acting abilities. Gael Torres is a porn star in the business because he loves sex and is good at it. He comes from a loving and open minded family who only want their son to be happy and aren't ashamed of his profession.

Gael Torres is that person you infrequently hear about…the well adjusted porn star. That such a person exists is a certainty but one the media seldom picks up on. Gael is a marvelous character whose believable and appealing personality makes the story and romance. And he comes with one of the loveliest set of parents around, his Finnish mother Leena and Spanish father, Diego, secondary characters who light up the page whenever they make an appearance.

On the opposite side of spectrum of the actors in the adult film industry is Liam Barton, known as Lithium. He represents those who comes from abusive backgrounds, men accompanied by their own painful set of circumstances, a reality of this world as well. His background? That of a ultra conservative Latter day Saints family he escaped from but barely. The background created for him by the authors feels as complicated, haunted and real as Gael's does open, happy, and accepting. The pairing of these two dissimilar men helps to create the drama and believable relationship dynamics that the pair must work through. And all the adjustments and compromises they achieve makes their romance and love seem not only viable but heartwarming and real.

The narrative begins with Liam already in Solitude, Utah but then it switches back and forth between Gael and Liam, the past and the present. The effect that changeover has upon the story can feel jumbled at times but the story is such a good one that an uneven narrative can be somewhat overlooked. These are easy character to learn to care about and the other characters in their orbit are just as believable as they are.

I absolutely recommend Solitude by Anna Martin and Tia Fielding. The romance is complicated and heartfelt, the characters believable and compelling, and the story plot marvelous all the way to the end. And did I say it was sexy and hot too? Well, it is! Grab it up today and find out for yourself!

Cover Art by Reese Dante is lovely even if it doesn't exactly speak to the plot and characters.
