This is a potentially good story spoiled by poor writing, spelling and grammar. It highlights the reason why so many people, with a good story to tell, have chosen to do so with the aid of a "ghost writer". Even sensible proof-reading and subsequent corrections and editing by the publisher would have helped.

The book needs an orthography check (to avoid repeated words, typos, etc.) and it would also benefit from editing (to make a nicer read of it).

l thought the author probably has a much nicer and exciting story to tell. The way it is conveyed, it gets 3 stars from me as it's a bit plain. l'm of the impression if the author sat with the right 'ghost writer', he could get a much better book, as it could be a nice and fresh outlook of an UK sniper on the Afghan conflict (as opposed to all those narrated by US soldiers).

In any case, l enjoyed reading it; it just has a plain narrative, non-thrilling writing style.

Now, for 3€ you won't go wrong; you'll certainly enjoy it besides its flaws. Just remember it won't keep you up until 3am because you can't put it down (which can be a good thing ;-)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Outstanding military service 8. Februar 2016

James Cartwright details his interesting military experiences from his initial training through to his service in Afghanistan, resignation from the Army, civilian job for twelve months, & rejoining the Army as a Military Policeman.
I was impressed with his detailed record of contacts, actions, & the special fellowship that only exists between service personnel who have shared these experiences together.
Another serious situation, also experienced by James, was the PTSD, which is so prevalent among Vietnam, Timor, Iraq & Afghanistan veterans.
This book is an outstanding record of a soldier's service in a war zone, & indicates the personal hardships which were required to be endured, in order to achieve the stated objectives.
The number of British service personnel killed in action, as at 24/07/2015 was 454.
One can only hope, that from a British perspective, their sacrifice achieved an appropriate benefit. Only time will tell.
Thank you James for both your courageous service, & also for your effort in recording the details. You should feel very proud of your achievements.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Sniper in Helmand Review 13. Juni 2014

I chose this rating as I have read several other books on this subject and they seemed to flow more easily then this one. I had a disconnect with some of the writer's buddies as there was little character development but this was real life and not fantasy. The book was wordy in areas and I needed to skip ahead to maintain interest. I realize this is a true story of an honorable man who served his country under the worst circumstances and survived. He and all of his fellow soldiers are true hero's.

This is written from a British perspective on the Afghan war. As expected they fought and died just as valiantly as American and other countries soldiers.

The author made it back which was more than some of his friends.

God bless him and the other combatants.
