“The real clincher here, as Arnold helps us realize, is that in order to make successful resolutions, “micro” or not, we have to know ourselves and stop picking one-size-fits-all goals out of the bin.”
“These genius strategies from Caroline Arnold, one of the few female bosses in Goldman Sachs’ tech department, will help [to accomplish your goals].”
“If there’s a habit you’ve been pushing against without a breakthrough, check out Small Move, Big Change. Reading it may be one of the last macroresolutions you ever make.”
"[Small Move, Big Change is a] thought-provoking road map to successfully transforming ourselves with new habits”
Arnold, the managing director at Goldman Sachs and a technology leader on Wall Street, shows us how to effect behavioral change by thinking small. Through her own work, she’s discovered that you can vanquish bad habits by focusing on concrete, manageable goals.”
Library Journal
“The only thing this book did for me was to get me to floss regularly, which led to less red wine, which led to snapping at my kids less, which led to their doing the dishes more. Who knew that flossing could change your life?”
— Dr. Wendy Walsh, CNN’s human behavior expert
“I love this book! From page one, Small Move, Big Change is filled with wisdom, insight, and whip-smart ‘micro’ suggestions you can actually implement to change your life. Caroline Arnold manages to be funny, down to earth, and hard-hitting all at the same time. This is a must-read.”
— Amy Chua, Yale law professor and author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
Small Move, Big Change is a rare self-improvement book that actually works. With the right mix of science and practical examples, Caroline Arnold offers powerful advice for motivating ourselves to save more, eat less, get organized, boost our willpower, and even keep our New Year’s resolutions. It’s the most useful guide to getting things done since Getting Things Done.”
— Adam Grant, Wharton professor and bestselling author of Give and Take

"The most useful guide to getting things done since Getting Things Done."
--Adam Grant,  author of Give and Take

Learn how small behavioral changes can lead to major personal and professional self-improvement

Whether trying to lose weight, save money, get organized, or advance on the job, we’re always setting goals and making resolutions, but rarely following through on them.  According to longtime Wall Street technology strategist Caroline Arnold, the “big push” strategy of the New Year’s resolution is designed to fail, because it broadly pits our limited willpower stores against an autopilot of entrenched behaviors and attitudes that is far more powerful.  To change ourselves permanently, we need to focus our self-control on precise behavioral targets and overwhelm them.  Small Move, Big Change is Arnold’s guide to turning broad personal goals into meaningful and discrete behavioral changes that lead to permanent improvement. Providing scores of engaging real-world examples and new scientific findings, she shows us that while the traditional resolution promises rewards on a distant “someday,” microresolutions work because they reward us today by instantly altering our routines and, ultimately, ourselves.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Must read 10. Januar 2015

You've read all the books on getting things done, sharpening the saw, putting first things first. Then you put those books down, resolve to be a new person. Tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes next week. Next week becomes next month. Years pass, and you still haven't gotten into the weekly review habit.

Enter Micro Resolutions. Simple, micro, small changes at the margins done two at a time. All of a sudden, small resolutions become habits, become transformations. And all based on the latest discoveries in neuroscience and the psychology of efficacy and happiness.

At a bare minimum, read the first part of the book. Then set a micro resolution to read 5 pages a day.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting, effective, manageable approach to making and keeping resolutions 5. März 2017

I originally found this book at my local library, and I liked it so much that I not only bought a copy for myself, I bought copies for two of my friends. I love the concept of a micro-resolution, and the cumulative effect that they can have. The book is divided into essentially 3 parts: the description of how the author arrived at the concept of a micro-resolution/how to crate your own micro-resolution, example micro-resolutions by topic area (such as organization, weight loss, exercise, etc.), and a discussion of the process of implementing your micro-resolutions, and some of the challenges you might experience. I find the latter type of information very helpful in any self-help type book, because it keeps you from giving up when you hit a roadblock of some kind. I also found the micro-resolutions by topic discussion very helpful. Overall I am very happy with this book, and strongly recommend it.

My only complaint is that she oversimplifies the issue of weight loss. I think the information/approach she presents is probably very helpful for people who are like her with less than 20 lbs to lose, but her calories in/calories out approach, whiel still common in the weightloss field is not really how our bodies work (it's been so successful for the tens of millions of people who are struggling with their weight, hasn't it? [Yes, sarcasm intended]).

First part of the book is packed with great information & detail on how to make micro resolutions become habit. The second part of the book gives examples real life cases in which people improved using the system.

I have quit smoking, reduced my sugar intake by more than half and lost two pounds my first week reading this... I am so happy with this book. I listen to it in the car and while I cook. It soothes me and has helped so much. It helps to really listen a couple of times and sit down and write out your behavior to see what small move will change everything.... it really works. Fantastic.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Finally--a practical guide to changing behavior and developing new habits ... 28. Dezember 2015

Finally--a practical guide to changing behavior and developing new habits! Most books that talk about some kind of self-improvement are long on theory and short on practicality. This book is not. The author provides the basis for her thinking, but she really focuses on practical examples. This book has certainly caused me to stop trying to conquer the entire mountain in one leap, but to tackle small, discreet tasks that make a difference.
