Drei Doctoren, was soll da falsch gehen? So einiges.

Gallifrey is surrounded by an unknown fleet with superior technology. The only lead the beleaguered Time Lords have is a trace of the Doctor's artron energy. Meanwhile, on a lonely planet, in the north Atlantic and onboard a star cruiser the Doctor finds himself in the company of a young woman who seems strangely familiar.

Big Finish needed something special to kick off their range of Doctor Who audio adventures so it makes sense that they released a multi-Doctor project. The story, written by Nicholas Briggs, is nicely paced. I like how each of the Doctors was given a chance to shine in their own episode before they were all brought together on Gallifrey for the finale.

While there aren't any real surprises here, it's a solid effort that draws on the show's rich history while still being a bit innovative. The story features Coordinator Vansell of the CIA (Celestial Intervention Agency) who shows up in several other Big Finish productions, most notably the Gallifrey series, and also introduces the Knights of Velyshaa who appear in the Dalek Empire series.

It's been several years since I listened to this audio, but when I revisited it I was pleased to discover that it has aged remarkably well. While it's not the best thing Big Finish has ever done, it is definitely entertaining to listen to the Doctor squabble with himself.

HASH(0x91df46d8) von 5 Sternen What a beginning 6. August 2008
Von Peter Ingemi - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
The Sirens of Time was the first offering from Big Finish in it now 10 year old Doctor Who franchise. It had several built in advantages:

1....Other than the charity episode charity episode this was the first new Doctor Who episode in years (If you don't include the television movie almost 10 years).

2....As a multiple doctor episode it has an advantage in getting an audience.

3....Since it is the first episode it didn't have the same deadlines that the episodes that would follow would have.

Despite this the reviews at the various Dr. Who fan sites were decidedly so so. For the life of me I can't see why. The three solo stories where strong. The 4th episode containing our three heroes was first rate and the basic plot was very well thought out. I really can't see what the complaining was about. Maybe the very lack of episodes made them cautious but as far as I'm concerned 10 years later it still stands up strong.

The nature of this episode is that it can be listened to at any time without worrying about continuity. If you are a big finish fan make sure you manage to grab it. It is very much worth grabbing. So don't wait too long.

If one word could describe, "The Sirens of Time," it would be ambitious. The plot has three Doctors in it as well as the Time Lords and a threat to the entire Universe and time and space. The first three episodes feature of the Doctors in their own individual adventures and in episode four they team up.

Despite the seeming overreach, the story actually works quite well. It's true that thet are are some shaky moments in the first episode and a few dodgy sound effects, but both Peter Davison and Colin Baker turn in superb performances. Sarah Mowat does a great job with her multi-faceted role and avoids giving the game away. The concept is also quite interesting and well-realized as it gives the Doctors quite a dilemma.

Another way in which it works is that these short episodes serve as a preview reel for the types of adventures the Doctors would have over the next 200+ releases. Overall, this is a very solid start for the Main range of Big Finish.

This was a great story and it was a joy to hear a new adventure with all of the Doctors! If you are a fan of the older series, you'll like this nostalgic ride down memory lane!
