Kurzbeschreibung

Lighthearted Historical Romance From a Rising Star

No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a lethal plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a twelve-year-old debt compels her to take the risk.

Fourteen years of constant vigilance hardens a man. Yet when Travis Archer confronts a female trespasser with the same vivid blue eyes as the courageous young girl he once aided, he can't bring himself to send her away. And when an act of sacrifice leaves her injured and her reputation in shreds, gratitude and guilt send him riding to her rescue once again.

Four brothers. Four straws. One bride. Despite the fact that Travis is no longer the gallant youth Meredith once dreamed about, she determines to stand by his side against the enemy that threatens them both. But will love ever be hers? Or will Travis always see her merely as a short-straw bride?

"Humor, romance, history, interesting plot and great characters--Short-Straw Bride has it all. A lovely Christian romance." --Historical Novels Review
"If you want a hard-to-put-down, fast read, then Short-Straw Bride is the next book you should read. Set in the1880's in Texas, the characters are as real as any in life today. There is loyalty, gentleness, humor, love, anger, greediness and stubbornness yet this story is inspirational and fun to enjoy. With the full flavor of the West and the oftentimes deceitful actions of others, this heartwarming love story adds so much to the rich, engaging plot" --Portland Book Reviews

5.0 von 5 Sternen Warning - Reading this book in public can lead to mild embarrassment. 15. Juni 2012
Von Regina Jennings - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I had a doctor appointment recently and was excited to finally have some quiet time to read "Short-Straw Bride". Unfortunately, the waiting room was too quiet.

When young Meredith steals onto Archer land and Travis - the misunderstood and feared hero - comes to her rescue, I was hooked. I was completely engrossed in the story when Meredith, under the impression that she's dreaming, tells the scary Mr. Archer what she really thinks of him...and I snorted...snorted loudly earning concerned glances from my waiting-room friends.

But I couldn't stop thinking about the story and when I got back to my car I gave into temptation and decided to sit there and read at least one more chapter - after all, the kids were okay without me for just a bit more. One chapter stretched into another...and another. When would Travis figure out that Meredith didn't want him to be SO gentlemanly? Would Crockett, Jim and Neill find brides of their own? (Love their names, by the way.) I was quite engrossed when one of my new waiting room acquaintances knocked on the car window to see if I was having car trouble. Busted.

Short-Straw Bride is a wonderful story. Travis's confused handling of his bride is endearing. Meredith's hero worship transforms seamlessly into a mature understanding of her husband, without costing him any shine. I don't know if there are subsequent books planned for these entertaining brothers, but sign me up for the petition drive.

Well done and highly recommended. Just don't read it with an audience.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved It! 10. Januar 2014
Von Voracious Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Meredith Hayes had had a crush on Travis Archer for years, ever since he’d pulled her from a coyote trap and carried her home when she was twelve. That day had left her with a crippled leg that kept other men from courting her, until Roy Mitchell came calling. Meredith was pretty sure he was mainly interested on getting his hands on the land her father had left her, though. When she hears him plotting to burn down the Archers’ barn, because they won’t sell to him, she has to warn them. She’s owes Travis at least that much. Riding out to their ranch, however, sets in motion a whole set of events that none of them expected.

I loved this book. Karen Witemeyer can certainly tell a story. I adored STEALING THE PREACHER, and this one comes very close to being just as good. I read them out of order, because this one should be first, but that didn’t keep me from thoroughly enjoying them. The only thing I wondered about is why Travis didn’t just leave the gate open instead of dismantling it. It would have been more logical, especially for a ranch. Still, this is a wonderful novel filled with loveable characters, intriguing plot, humor and wit, and a sweet growing romance. I’m looking for more books by this author.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Adored every minute! 6. Juli 2013

I adored every minute that I spent reading Short-Straw Bride. The tension and interaction between the main character, Meredith, and the male lead, Travis, was swoon-worth and so sweet. Travis was protective, stubborn and sweet and Meredith was both brave and vulnerable at the same time. Their relationship progressed in a really heartfelt way, and watching their relationship develop after their "short-straw" wedding tugged at my heart. The supporting characters, especially the other 3 Archers brothers, were endearing. I like how the story emphasized familial love and not just romantic love.

The plot flowed so well. The story line itself could have been predictable, but Witemeyer through a twist in there that definitely gave the story it's own unique twist. It was adventurous, exciting and a little on the tense side, which I loved. Witemeyer does a great job with intermingling details about the Archer's past as well as Meredith's past without resulting to exposition, and they really added depth to the story. There were some parts that I found a little cheesy, but for the most part, I didn't mind it.

I definitely recommend Short Straw Bride for readers who like romantic stories with some adventure thrown in the mix.

Meredith Hayes has secretly loved Travis Archer since the day he rescued her from a coyote trap on his fortress-like ranch. Now, twelve years after that initial encounter, she's determined to repay her debt when she hears an unscrupulous man is planning to burn the Archer brothers off their land. When her errand gets a lot more complicated than that, both Meredith and Travis are in for the adventure of their lives.

Meredith and Travis are wonderful characters. Meredith especially captured my interest as an intelligent, freethinking woman who maintains propriety in her time period but expects to be treated like she has a brain in her head. She's an orphan with a permanent limp, so she could have easily let herself become a victim. Instead, she stands up for herself and others, asks God to guide her decisions, and consistently puts others' needs ahead of her own, even when that might place her in danger.

For his part, Travis is a delicious hero but refreshingly human. He's physically and mentally strong, loyal almost to a fault, and fiercely protective of both Meredith and his three brothers. Yet guilt and fear drive him to be overprotective and shoulder burdens God never meant him to carry. His spiritual arc is possibly one of the best parts of Short Straw Bride.

The plot itself is consistently engaging, made so mainly because of great secondary characters. The other Archer brothers were a pleasure to get to know, Crockett in particular. Their interactions with Meredith made me smile and occasionally think of a western version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Um, Snow White and four ornery ranchers, rather. Karen also pulls off an unexpected yet believable plot twist when Meredith does not turn out to be the damsel in distress of the final few chapters.

I highly recommend this and Karen Witemeyer's other books. Now, off to locate Stealing the Preacher.

Ask me what my favorite book is. Go ahead. Ask me. The answer is simple. Move over, BRIDE MOST BEGRUDGING. Step aside, THE MEASURE OF A LADY. Make way, TO WIN HER HEART. Sorry, THE DOCTOR'S LADY. As much as I will always love you, you have to make room for my new "number one". My answer to your question is: SHORT-STRAW BRIDE.

When this book arrived I squealed with such delight you would have thought it was Ed McMahon at my door announcing me the winner of Publishers Clearing House. But no, it was only the UPS guy with my copy of SHORT-STRAW BRIDE.

This is the PERFECT book. Let me repeat: this is the PERFECT BOOK! Of course this is just my opinion, but I defy anyone to read this and not at least like it. It has all the elements needed to make a fabulous, totally engrossing story. I knew I would like it, cuz I like all Witemeyer books, but I was not prepared for the utter and totally consuming pleasure it gave me.

Twelve years ago Meredith Hayes was rescued by a reclusive (yet strapping and handsome) young man named Travis Archer, and she's never seen him since. But all these years, in her dreams, he has been her "knight in shining armor". When she overhears someone planning to burn their land and property, she knows she must warn the Archers. She also knows that anyone found on Archer land will be treated like an enemy. But, she is willing to take the risk.

Travis Archer is intrigued by the courageous and beautiful trespasser who claims their land is in danger. And when her reports turn out to be true, and she risks her life to help save his land, he knows he will always be in her debt. Then another accident leaves her seriously injured and her reputation in tatters. There is only one solution: one of the four Archer brothers needs to marry her. So they draw straws, and Travis is the one left with the short straw.

Do you ever read a story and wish there was more romance? This one has plenty! Do you ever wish there were more kisses in a story? This one has many wonderful kisses! Do you ever become bored, or feel like it's taking too long for the story to get anywhere? Not so here. The plot is excellent and you won't ever be bored or overwhelmed by the plot. Do you ever get annoyed with certain characters, or feel like certain characters are superfluous? Every character in this story serves a purpose.

The spiritual side of the story is not to be forgotten. Witemeyer books are always uplifting. The message I got from this book was this: if you want to speak to God, pray--if you want God to speak to you, read your scriptures. I loved how the characters were always turning to the scriptures to find the answers to their problems and the guidance they needed. I LOVED that!

Travis Archer is also one of the most wonderful men I have ever read about. His love for Meredith is SO amazingly sweet and just what every girl wants in her man. He is perfectly handsome and comes to the rescue whenever she needs him. Love it!! He also cares about his wife's feelings and takes her advise to heart. What's not to love about a guy like that? He's also tough and brave, yet gentle and oh, so romantic! Oh man, I'm getting all worked up again. *teehee *

I really can't say too many good things about this story, but I will refrain. I don't want to over-do it. I simply cannot wait to hear what you think about this story so we can talk about how awesome all the Archer boys are, and how you liked the rescue scenes, etc. OK, I really gotta stop.

You will definitely like, and possibly even love this book to death, just like me. Enjoy!
