Kurzbeschreibung

For a young society woman seeking a favorable marriage in the late 1890s, so much depends on her social season debut. Clara Carter has been given one goal: secure the affections of the city's most eligible bachelor. Debuting means plenty of work--there are corsets to be fitted, dances to master, manners to perfect. Her training soon pays off, however, as celebrity's spotlight turns Clara into a society-page darling.

Yet Clara wonders if this is the life she really wants, especially when she learns her best friend has also set her sights on Franklin De Vries. When a man appears who seems to love her simply for who she is, and gossip backlash turns ugly, Clara realizes it's not just her heart at stake--the future of her family depends on how she plays the game.

3. April 2010

After reading a HOST of mediocre Christian Fiction, Siri Mitchell has once again given me hope in the genre. After a litter of amish and pioneer subjects - Siri does not disappoint when it comes to historical fiction. And once more, her characters are multi-dimensional and interesting! They are not boring and predictable. Oh, Siri I could just HUG you for this book! Thank you!

Clara is a bright, intelligent woman who dreams of going to Vassar College. She lives with her wealthy, but distant and somewhat mysterious father and prickly aunt - an ambitious and socially-driven woman who is determined to help her niece marry the "catch of the ton" - Franklin de Vries. Clara is socially-anxious and is constantly concerned with what she should do and say. A welcome relief to her circle is Harold de Vries, the congenial younger brother. Her lifelong friend, Lizzie, is also a lifeline to her in this foreign land of intrigues and alterior motives.

The supporting characters are just as interesting! How did her father really earn his fortune? Were the de Vries really responsible for ruining the Carter fortune decades ago? Is a marriage between Franklin and Clara for revenge?

My ONLY regret is that I finished this book in one day and now there is no more! Siri Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in Christian Fiction. These characters are fresh, the storyline is unique and ingenuitive. And Siri is a genius. Do yourself a favor. Buy DON'T BORROW this book. You'll want to read it again.

Clara Carter is to make her debut into New York Society and is given the assignment of becoming engaged and married to Franklin De Vries, the richest and most eligible bachelor. Her father and aunt tell her that her family’s honor and future rests with her. She finds Franklin to be a bit conceded, arrogant, and callous. His younger brother Harry, however, is warm, friendly, and considerate. While being pushed toward Franklin, she finds herself drawn to Harry. When Harry seems to favor her best friend, Lizzie, and she discovers how unscrupulous her father is, Clara begins to wonder if she’s even good enough for Harry anyway.

I found this to be a fascinating step into debutants and high society in 1891 New York. This turned out to be a page-turner for me. I did find a few scanning errors. The first sentence of chapters tended to have a letter left out of some word, like “dresed” for “dressed,” “wek” for “week,” and “slep” for “sleep.” “Would” was used once for “wouldn”t,” “Hary” for “Harry,” and “Miss Carter!”s” for “Miss Carter’s.” There were sections of blank spaces in the middle of some chapters. It didn’t make sense to me that Clara’s father would readily admit all the seedy thing he was involved with to his seventeen-year-old daughter. But I still found the novel mesmerizing.

I just read this wonderful novel for the second time in 2 years. Siri Mitchell writes beautifully and clearly, and this book was very well-edited.

This is more than a Victorian-era romance story; it is quite educational about that period of time, and particularly about the lives of upper class women. Although the first half of this novel might feel a little slow after a time, it is definitely a "set-up." Clara, the main character, would be a more liberated woman (oh, how she longs to lose the corset, but she is, literally, tied into it!), if only her family would allow her to figure out what she wants. A domineering aunt orchestrates every aspect of Clara's Season/Coming Out in New York City of 1891. There are family secrets to be discovered that will eventually allow Clara to become free of the constraints of the society of her time -- a society that proclaims a lack of importance for women to learn, grow, express themselves, and have an opinion. Loved this book -- both times I read it. Love the author's notes about her research of the time period.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Well, it was just "OK" 19. Oktober 2010

I read this before I read Mitchell's previous novels, and I must say the earlier ones are better. The good things about this novel are: the main character, Clara, is developed rather well, and she has a distinct voice. It also reveals great details about society at that time, especially the restrictions and expectations placed on women. I also liked that it was Christian without having a character who was always perfect. I also appreciated the lack of preachiness that many Christian novels have. What I did not like about this novel was the plot itself. While I did like the social intrigue and delving into dark areas of the city, the ending wrapped up too nicely. It was entertaining at times, but I was able to predict way too much. I don't feel that I wasted my money because it was a diverting, easy read, but it just doesn't have the substance that A Constant Heart and Love's Pursuit have.

I've read a "tiny bit" about the Gilded Age and always wondered why it was called the Gilded Age. After reading She Walks In Beauty I realized that word gilded fit this age of time perfectly. One definition of gilded is: "To give an often deceptively attractive or improved appearance to." Clara, the main heroine, is a true blue, I-want-to-present-myself-as-the-real-me-kind of girl. But her aunt feels that no one's true beauty will catch the man of the season. Her aunt "gilds" Clara into becoming the debutante that she thinks will win the heart of Franklin De Vries, the man of the season. Unbeknownst to Clara's aunt, Clara's best friend's mother is also trying to make her daughter into a "gild" of capturing the best man of the season. Siri does an excellent job of writing a story about false pretenses and how God wants us to be just who He created us to be. An interesting and fascinating story of The Game, The Prize, The Rules. If you love historical fiction then you too will enjoy this 5 star read!
