Kurzbeschreibung

All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school. She joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There, she meets Josh again, Ben’s childhood friend from the Navajo reservation. The little boy from the rez has grown up fast, and Hannah can’t help but feeling more for him than just friendship.

But fate apparently has something else in store for her. And it’s not peace and quiet. Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the history of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. They seem to come closer – and why is Josh always present in her dreams?

Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you.

'Shadow of Time' blends the best of the paranormal romance, young adult and new adult genre to give readers a unique story! The book won 1st prize in the Romance category of the eLit Awards 2014.

This was an amazing journey! I’m a huge fan of all mystical stuff and lore, but I think it’s even more amazing if you can find it still in present days, like the Native American believes and traditions. I’ve always been a fan of ‘Indian stuff’, but I just fell in love with it all over again. I have to admit it doesn’t sound all that far-fetched to me as most other paranormal stories.

For lovers of Native American stories, traditions and magic, I can only recommend this. It was so packed with it all! From the ordinary to the supernatural, it gives off this particular feeling that I can’t really describe. And speaking about describing, the sceneries! OMG! I have to tell you I’m not much for imagining this kind of things, it’s usually something I don’t bother much with. But I could pictures those crystal clear, and it was so beautiful. Same goes for the songs and the magic that was practically everywhere.I had to rush through this, but still it managed to capture me. That earns four thumps-up for style from me! And I know I will definitively read that again with more time at hand, and it’ll probably be even more amazing when I can actually savor the imagines conjured up in my mind.

As for Hannah, Josh and Ben, I thought they made a more than awesome leading triplet, and for all the haters of love triangles: none here, so pick this up. You’ll love it! I liked it, too. At first, I thought Nick might be complicating things, but he was just a friend all trough it, and it was refreshing. This story is about friendship much more than many other’s I’ve read.

The way the characters were displayed was very good as well. Ususally you get the feeling you don’t agree with the PoV that discribes things to you, for example about others acting strange or something. Not here.

2.0 von 5 Sternen It's a pretty young Y/A book with an interesting story line 9. November 2014
Von L. Slater - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
It's a pretty young Y/A book with an interesting story line. Heroine falls for younger guy... under age, (why couldn't he have been 18 instead of 17? And she is a first year teacher.? ) Why the 2 star rating?... well, it was deceptive. This book, quite literally, was basically torn in half. The story leads you into the story, then just stops. You must buy the second book... There is no conclusion in book 1. The fact that my kindle told me that there was suppose to be 412 pages in the novel. I must have been speed reading-NOT, to come to the end of "book 1" so quickly. In fact the second book just starts on the very next sentence or chapter. So, unless you are prepared to BUY the second book, don't start the first.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Native American Theme! 18. Februar 2013
Von MicheleK - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I bought this book when I found out Native Americans were a part of the story. I enjoyed how the author used real Navajo words and customs. Frankly, I thought the author must have lived in the location of this book and personally knew about this culture, so I was floored when I found out she had never been in the United States. That was awesome research! And she also converted the book from Dutch into English (and American English at that!). Very admirable.
I loved the storyline that included Hannah, Josh (the hot Native American), and Hannah's brother Ben. There were aspects of reincarnation, animal spirit guides, a wise medicine man, and skinwalkers (think of evil ghosts that can change into people or animals) that drew me in and had me hooked. There was romance, humor, horror, and history all wrapped in this book that made it a joy to read.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Book that Makes You a Better Person 7. Januar 2013
Von Adela C. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Ever since the very first pages, I felt incredibly hooked by the story. I usually know right from the beggining if I like a book or not, and it seems that I was right this time too.

Hannah is a lovable character right from the start, with her shyness, sense of humour and insecureness. She is very dedicated in everything she does, and will not back out when it comes to the people she loves, even if she is in mortal danger. Throughout the book, I could relate to most of what she was experiencing, but I felt a little bit annoyed when she was crying like a baby because of Josh. However, I also think that this would have been the case for any of us women if we had had to go through a situation like hers. I could tell from very early on that there was something more to Josh than met the eye. And it's such a pity I can't tell you how amazing it was when I discovered exactly what. I would spoil the book for you if I did. His connection to Hannah is very clear, not only to them, but also to the people around them. It literally made me mumble "you idiot!" anytime Josh was afraid of getting involved into a serious relationship with her. I loved him at the beggining, hated him and ended up loving him a lot more when I found out about his motives.

My favourite parts were definitely the ones where the Dinè's way of life was detailed. From the way they think and eat, to the way they act and talk. Jen documented herself very well and it is amazing to what extent she managed to describe everything, especially when you find out that she has never been to America, let alone Navajo Nation! When I got to the half of the book, I felt that everything was happening too slowly, but then there were two chapters about what happened in the past, and everything began to make so much sense, it was actually incredible how everything was connected, how every single detail had a purpose and a meaning behind it.

Honestly, I would have loved to find out more about the past. It was so intriguing to learn about the Navajo history and language, their traditions and the struggles they had been through to survive. At each of these two chapters' ending, I was so touched I felt like crying. Jen managed to make me very interested in the Dinè, and I will definitely read more books about them, especially nonfiction ones, as I want to learn more.

"Shadow of Time" is marked as YA Paranormal, but it is so much more than that! It is one of those books that once finished, you feel you are a better, more mature person. I recommend it to everyone, but I think it will appeal more to girls and women.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A heart-pulling romance in a beautiful Navajo setting 25. November 2016
Von Angel Leya - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I have to say, this was not what I expected when I picked up the book, and even my first impression did not quite prepare me for the book.

Hannah is back at her parents' log cabin for her summer break from teaching, and her and her brother Ben have the place all to themselves. But her time off is anything but relaxing. Seeing her brother's childhood friend, Josh, all grown up puts her in a tizzy. He's handsome, sensitive, and has earned a special place among his Navajo people, but he's burdened and distant at times, which throws her off. On top of it, she's having nightmares that feel real about an ancient time, in which she's an integral player, and she's being harassed by different people. It's a summer full of so much promise -- if she can get past all the hurtles in her way.

So, for my expectations. I frequently get books but can't read them right away, so when I looked at the cover (which I did both when I purchased the book and before I read it), I was surprised by the Native American theme in a very fantasy type cover. But it's pretty, so in that respect I suppose it's working.

I started reading, and the writing was decent, but it smacked of a first book, which made me nervous. I almost gave up at that point, but I decided to give it a little more time. The Navajo setting had me hooked, and I'm so glad.

The romance is very hot and cold. Hannah doesn't quite seem like a 21 year old, so her falling for a "more mature" 17 year old doesn't seem too far off base. Hannah definitely looses sight of the age difference as the book progresses, but we get gentle reminders from the author, which was a nice touch. (I think at one point it said the age difference is 6 years, but it's only 4 years, and from the sounds of it, not quite that.) The author did a great job with pulling the emotional strings with the romance.

I was a bit bummed about the ending though. It ends on a pretty dramatic note - not necessarily a cliff-hanger, but definitely not a comfortable close. So I suppose I'll have to put the next book on my reading list to get my resolution, but overall, not a bad book.

I can't vouch for the Native American bits, since I'm admittedly ignorant, but they felt authentic. There was a lot of nice detailing, and quite a few Native American words and such. I hope to add more Native American stories to my library, so this was a fun start.

2.0 von 5 Sternen What I read of it wasn't horrible, but this was not the book for me 9. Dezember 2014
Von Tea Oli - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

I couldn't get past the ages of the protagonist and the boy she was crushing on. It might not have been illegal (I don't know the laws there) for them to get together, but I had to stop reading before they ever got the chance because I wasn't comfortable with the idea.

The writing wasn't horrible, however. And I think the plot would have been intriguing if not for the potential romance... and the fact that NO ONE in the story raised the questions I raised.
