Pressestimmen

“An engrossing saga of the suspenseful, intriguing, and dangerous underwater investigation of a Mystery U-boat.”
–CLIVE CUSSLER

“Robert Kurson’s Shadow Divers, about the divers exploring a sunken shipwreck off the New Jersey coast, is a gripping account of real-life adventurers and a real-life mystery. In addition to being compellingly readable on every page, the book offers a unique window on the deep, almost reckless nature of the human quest to know.”
–SCOTT TUROW, author of Reversible Errors

“A tremendously suspenseful story of discovery that comes as close as any book could to providing the reader with approximate sensations of deep sea diving and of life on a submarine at war, and that leaves us with a hell of an impression of the grit, guts, and compassion of a U-boat crew and the two American divers who risked everything to solve the mystery of their last mission.”
–JOHN MCCAIN, author of Faith of My Fathers and Why Courage Matters

“Robert Kurson’s status as an undiscovered pleasure among Chicago readers is about to change, I suspect, in a hurry. Shadow Divers is so culturally astute and terrifyingly suspenseful that it should reach the sort of audience John Berendt, Susan Orlean, Jon Krakauer and Laura Hillenbrand have recently earned. Kurson’s new focus is the larger historical world--a world of U-Boats, forensics and lung-crushing pressure--and his prose is, as always, plain gorgeous.”
–JAMES MCMANUS, author of Positively Fifth Street

“A winning tale exceedingly well told, Shadow Divers takes us on a dangerous and seemingly quixotic descent into the murk–and then, in a fog of nitrogen narcosis, brings us back to the surface with a richer, fuller fathoming of a history we only thought we knew.”
–HAMPTON SIDES, author of Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of World War II’s Greatest Rescue Mission

Synopsis

February 1945. The war is almost over and Britain and America rule the waves. Sixty young Nazi soldiers are stranded underwater in U-Boat U-869 with barely enough fuel to make it home. The commander must decide whether to carry on to America and risk death in the pursuit of glory, or to admit defeat and return home. He decides to risk it. September 1991. Two deep-sea wreck divers receive a tip-off from a local fisherman about a site off the New Jersey coast. What they discover defies belief: a Nazi U-boat, 230 feet underwater. The recommended limit for diving is 130 feet, but John Chatterton and Richie Kohler know that if they don't take the risk, the mystery of the wreck will remain unsolved. Shadow Divers is the extraordinary story of the six-year quest for Hitler's lost sub. In the attempt to identify the sunken U-boat and its crew, the team teach themselves German, turn back fanatics and conspiracy theorists, and piece together an incredible story. In between, they make some of the most daring and dangerous scuba dives ever attempted. This is a gripping and compellingly readable account of human courage in the face of remarkable odds. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Really an amazing book about all kinds of things - deep diving, wrecks, history, Vietnam and WW2, peoples minds. It is very gripping and never boring. If you are a diver be warned - this story might change your mind about deep diving. Always when I was reading I could just go and do a deep wreck dive right away. This book also helped me to bring more of the history and circumstances of the sinking of a vessel into a wreck diver course. It totally changed my mind about wrecks, their history and the people that were on board etc. GREAT STUFF

During my travels in SE Asia a scuba diving instructor recommended this book to me.
After starting this book I was captured. I literally couldn't put it off my hands.
The author is able to catch the imagination of the reader. During the intrductional part of this book, I could see/feel myself diving at the edge of nitrogen narcosis, discovering unknown shipwrecks.
I couldn't wait to know which wreck it would be, and how it got to it's final destination.
And the best of this book is: It's non-fiction! One of the most exciting stories scuba divers can live.

It's definitely one of my favourite books, and since I really enjoy reading, this is a recommendation to buy this book!

English isn't my mothertongue, but I was able to keep up with the storyline, it wasn't difficult to read.

If you like U-boats or diving this is a book you will enjoy very much! The focus is quite balanced and therefore both groups of readers will find it interesting to see the others domain. As a diver you feel how narrow things get when they're back down there. If you are a Tec/Trimix diver you will also remember the decisions you took down there when something went bad. And you will certainly dive differently after this read!

Robert Kurson gives a vivid and fascinating account of two people, and their do-or-die attitude in solving the mystery of "their" U boat. Kurson takes his readers down into the deep waters, to the U boat, and let them participate in this extraordinary adventure. I am fond of people who pursue their obsession, even if it might look like madness to the rest of the world. Kurson did a really good job in giving an insight into the psyche of the two divers, which did not give up until they solved the mystery.

This story is worth reading - not only for divers, but for everybody. It is a piece of history accounting. And it gives the reader a glimpse of how history is made.
