Killian Marks is a third-generation hitman. After hunting monsters for over twenty years, he lives under no illusions of happily ever afters and fairy tales. Until he meets a man who threatens to disarm him, by giving him hope for a future and showing him there’s more to life than just death.
For Nick, living in shadows is second nature. He’s all too familiar with the dark side of humanity and knows how delicate life can be. Each new day is a gift, even though it means doing it alone. But he’ll risk his survival for the one man who awakens something deep within and leaves him yearning for more.
Nick wants to solve the mystery behind the dark, brooding man, while Killian craves the life and light emanating from Nick. They soon discover they have more in common than either could have anticipated. With both their lives and hearts at stake, they must confront the ghost from Nick’s past intent on tying up a loose end. Only then will they truly find peace, and discover the shades of life in between.
----------
Shades is a stand-alone novel, gritty in parts and romantic in others. There’s an assassin with a moral code, a snarky sidekick, a hint of suspense, a bit of violence…and a few surprises. Behind it all, there’s a love story that will thaw a killer’s heart.

The cover attracted me initially, then the blurb and sample persuaded me to go ahead and try it. I am so glad I did.
I really liked Killian and Nick. The slow build of their relationship and trust meant getting to know their characters a little before they got to know each other. Both had strong personalities, a sense of morality and back stories that were out of the ordinary, but I don't think their romance would have worked so well if Nick hadn't had the past he had.
There were a couple of places I could tell what was coming, but they weren't dragged out and were satisfyingly resolved.
This story was sexy, had action, romance, baddies, some good secondary characters and a writing style I liked.
From what I can tell this is totally different to the Halfway series, so while I'm still not going to go for that I will look out for more by this author particularly if there are any follow ups to this one. Ramon is someone I think who could have a tale to tell.
I will happily recommend this read, but have said it before and will no doubt say it again, if you like this try K A Merikan's Guns n Boys series. Brilliant.

It's not the most original of tales, but with the author's class and quality, it is a good read. I did find it the tiniest bit familiar, due to the leads' connection that was a bit obvious, and it also reminded me of Barbara Elsborg's Breaking. It ends with the kind of HEA that could have been sugary-sweet, but that the author built up nicely via Killian's past and connections, so it ended up believable.
I did wonder if Ramon might end up with a tale of his own, as it kind of felt as if he were being brought into the tale possibly a little more than might have been needed for a side character, but if he does, it's all good, as he ended up being a bit of a diamond in disguise.

I liked that Nick - a doctor- wasn't a privileged elitist and was capable of understanding and loving Killian just as he was and that each character satisfied a need in each other. I enjoyed the insight into each characters thought processes. I also loved the karmic touch - wont say more 'cos - spoiler.
I could have read this for free with Kindle Unlimited but I bought the book instead because I believe Jaime Reese gives good value oh and isn't the cover a killer picture of Killian - pun intended.

Every scene in shades had me hooked from the beginning to end
I was in the edge of my seat at times wondering what was going to happen from one page to the next
I felt everything Nick and killian were going through the heart break the tears the laughter their intense connection which jumps out on every page
I loved everything about shades and the feelings that i felt well reading Nick and killians journey it was perfect
