"The McCarthys deal deftly and compassionately with serious problems...The content is substantive and free of biases...useful to a wide audience who will gain from concrete and sensible advice that will foster rewarding behavior." - Siecus Reports

"Sexual Awareness is the gold standard for couple self-help sexuality books and is now unsurpassed with this updated and revised edition. It is the best consumer book available for helping couples grow their unique sexual style of intimacy, desire, pleasure, eroticism, and satisfaction." - Michael E. Metz, PhD, psychologist and sex therapist in private practice, Minnesota, USA

"Sexual Awareness is a superb book which sensitively offers responsible and highly useful sexual information that I am pleased to recommend to patients and friends alike!" - Michael A. Perelman, PhD, Past-President, Society for Sex Therapy & Research; Clinical Professor, Weill Medical College, Cornell University; Co-Director, Human Sexuality Program, The New York Presbyterian Hospital

Sexual Awareness will speak to you whether you have healthy and satisfying sexual experiences, negative or absent desire, whether you are partnered in a long-term committed relationship, single and anxious, and regardless of your age, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or culture. Barry and Emily bring their extensive experience as sex therapists, their meticulous attention to the scientific literature, and their lived experiences as husband and wife of 46 years to this edition. They hone in on the precise worries we all have about our sexuality, and offer a refreshing yet assertive stance to our misconceptions about sex. The exercises they suggest provide important detail that is often missed in the misguided approach of finding 'the quick and easy fix, ' and the instructions on genital pleasuring are exciting even for the more 'sexually-seasoned' reader. From toys to timing, myths to masturbation, and eroticism to erections, this book is a must-have on the shelves of sex therapists, educators, researchers, and anyone willing to cultivate sexual awareness. - Lori Brotto, PhD, Sex Researcher and Therapist, Department of Gynaecology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

"Now in its fifth edition since its original publication in 1975, Barry and Emily McCarthy s Sexual Awareness is still the go-to book for couples who want to learn more about healthy sexuality. Sexual Awareness is without question an important resource for all things sexual.Whether it is explaining the importance of afterplay, or detailing the intercourse traps couples can fall into, the McCarthys continually submit comforting, reassuring wisdom: no person or couple is in this alone. Through open communication, as well as an open mind, couples can make sex work for them. Yes, some problems are bigger than others, but, as some might say, where there s a will, there s a way." - Dan Berkowitz, www.psychcentral.com

HASH(0x9f7318d0) von 5 Sternen Helpful, realistic, essential information for couples of any age and situation 16. August 2012

Format: Taschenbuch
I'm a therapist that works with individuals and couples struggling with a wide range of sexual concerns. Many people walk into my office confused about what "healthy sexuality" is. Things have gotten off-track for them and they're not sure where they should be heading. This includes young people who have mostly been exposed to pornography and feel that what they see there is "normal." On some level they know that this can't be right but they're not sure what else they should be trying. It also includes established couples who feel they have gotten into a rut sexually or feel restricted by unhealthy lessons from childhood ("sex is dirty," etc.).

Unfortunately when people look for ideas about how to have a healthy and vibrant sex life they run into a lot of misinformation and gimmicks. The latest miracle potion, technique, toy, position, etc. that is supposedly going to guarantee an endless supply of mind-blowing sex for everyone forever. This is where this book really shines. It helps real couples improve their real sex life in their own unique way so that it truly is more enjoyable. It won't teach you some ancient secret trick to ultimate bliss, but it will help you communicate, explore, and engage with your partner is a new way that you will find exciting and rewarding. The book is not dogmatic, preachy, or intellectualized. It combines research and a wealth of professional experience with a warm and practical style that is easy to understand and apply. There are exercises to help couples learn and utilize the principles laid out in the book.

So, as you can tell, I strongly encourage you to pick this up (!) if you are looking for a book on this topic. You won't regret it. And, it's not just for individuals or couples who are obviously struggling with some sexual concern. It's also for "normal/regular" couples who simply want to better understand healthy sexuality and improve their physical and emotional intimacy. I especially believe that young people who have grown up in the "age of abundant porn" need to read this. Young men and women come out of adolescence with so much misinformation and confusion about what they should be doing in the bedroom. This book doesn't proscribe "one way," but instead uses principles and exercises to help everyone figure out what works for them.

HASH(0x9f8e8888) von 5 Sternen another great book from McCarthy 5. Oktober 2012

Not only did I find this book outstanding in its information, flow, and helpfulness, I've already given my copy to a couple and am now ordering another.

For those who are more conservative in their views, may I point out that I am what people would describe as a conservative Christian. Therefore, a couple things Barry writes are not in harmony with my beliefs and values. However, those are very, very few and, as he has always done, Barry treats our views with respect. From reading his research published in scholarly journals to reading his books to talking with him face-to-face, I find him balanced and typically dead-on target about how to help people overcome sexual difficulties and/or develop better love lives.

Barry and Emily have done so well with Sexual Awareness that not only have I recommended it to couples, but have suggested to the head of the Psychology Department of a Christian university that though not written as a textbook, this book should be part of the curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate psychology students, particularly those training in marriage and family therapy.

As Barry and Emily point out early in this volume, Sexual Awareness does not replace sex therapy. However, in my opinion, if both spouses work through the book together and do all the psychosexual exercises from each chapter, this book can play a significant role in leading them to develop a healthy love life and, if they have them, overcome many sexual difficulties.

HASH(0x9f8d512c) von 5 Sternen Excellent resource for both therapists and couples 20. September 2012

Format: Taschenbuch
I have been recommending the McCarthy books for years to both colleagues and patients. Sexual Awareness: Your Guide to Healthy Couple Sexuality has consistently been my favorite. Every edition seems to get a little better, if that's possible. The two main things I like about this book are 1) the numerous case examples peppered throughout the book, and 2) detailed guidelines as to how partners can enhance their sexual relationship. As a therapist who works with couples, I often use this book as an adjunct to therapy and consistently hear positive feedback from my patients regarding the usefulness of this book. Definitely a winner!

HASH(0x9f916a20) von 5 Sternen Excellent for Therapists as well 21. August 2012
Von MarFran - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Many beginnibg and experienced Couples Therapists struggle to find books that are clear and helpful when dealing with sexual problems. The McCarthy's have added this excellent guide to their list of wonderful books for patients and professionals. The psychosexual skill exercises are particularly helpful as is the chapter on relaspse prevention. Highly recommend this book.

HASH(0x9f8ed0fc) von 5 Sternen Helpful to just about every couple 3. August 2014
Von Bayla - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
A fabulous resource for just about every couple I know. Let's face it: it's hard to keep
sexual activity alive during a long relationship. This book gives stuck couples new hope.
My only complaint is that while this new addition makes a nod to its appropriateness for gay
and lesbian couples, I've yet to see an example that's anything but heterosexual. Still,
the examples can work for any kind of couple. This is a wise book. Don't let self-consciousness deprive
you of what it offers.
