I bought the vinyl in 1985 upon its release. I'd not heard any of the music because then, like now, radio would never touch anything like this. But, I knew who they were. I loved the music that Bauhaus made, and also loved the beautiful strangeness of Tones On Tail (still do).

However, this album completely surprised me. I had not heard anything like it. As of now, the only modern comparison I can draw is Thee Oh Sees fantastic Mutilator Defeated At Last (I can only assume Mr. Dwyer has heard this album). The atmosphere of Seventh Dream... was, and still is, literally engulfing. Like swimming in an ocean.

I just got this version last week. I had lost or worn out all my previous copies, and Amazon offered this classic at a fantastic price.

Hearing this again on a long road trip, with a nice sound system, reminded me of how wonderful this album is. Still. In my opinion, their second album Express, is also great, but after the third (the acoustically inclined Earth, Sun, Moon), they devolved into pedestrian song structures that I found disappointing ( although radio loved them!).

An integral aspect of the oceanic sonics of this album is Kevin Haskins' drumming. Do yourself a favor and let your mind and body rock to the amazing patterns he creates on every song. This reissue somehow brings his performances out of the murk of previous versions. Just remarkable.

Considering the background (resume) of this band, this album arrived out of nowhere. Anyone who says they saw this coming is lying. A most unexpected release that sounds prescient to this day (see The Oh Sees). Thirty-one years later, this still rocks hard. Right between the ears.

Raw charisma, an aggressive demeanor, and a strong personality made Peter Murphy the inevitable "star" of Bauhaus, but his "supporting cast" were brilliant instrumentalists, though it was in the service of the sturm and drang of gothic rock. A severe illness kept Murphy from contributing much of anything to the band's last release "Burning From The Inside", forcing the trio that would later become Love and Rockets into recording much of that CD on their own, pressing bassist David J and guitarist Daniel Ash into service as primary vocalists, and finding as a result their own unique energy.

By 1985, this trio (including drummer Kevin Haskins) had recorded "Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven", suggesting that their musical path would now concentrate on the elevation of spirit, on a quest not to explore the foulest, most unsavory elements of the human personality ("The Three Shadows",from Bauhaus's 'The Sky's Gone Out"), but on personal enlightenment, even possibly from a divine source ("A Private Future" from "Seventh Dream").

Most of the standout songs are driven by Daniel Ash's elegant yet simply structured guitar work (both acoustically and with electric guitar providing heavily processed/fuzzed out counterpoint), and David J's fretless bass weaving parallell melody lines around it. Kevin Haskins's percussion provides the adhesive the songs are cemented around, and an astute listener can hear the influence of industrial music as well, sometimes all in the same track ("Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven" comes to mind here, in addition to the Canadian version of "If There's A Heaven Above"), nowhere more in evidence than in the majestic tone poem "Haunted When The Minutes Drag". "A Private Future" is oriented primarily around Ash's 12-string acoustic, while "Dog-End of A Day Gone By" relies heavily on Ash's fuzzbox. Both are tied together by Haskin's propulsive drumming and the lead bass lines J. has laid down.

Lyrically, the band is signaling throughout the release that they are in search of transedence from the human condition, through either the levitiation of the soul ("A Private Future", "If There's A Heaven Above" and "Inside the Outside") or elimination of worldly desire ("The Game") ,the exceptions appearing to be the title track, "Haunted When The Minutes Drag", and a cover of the Temptations' "Ball of Confusion". David J's warm, rich expressive voice powers "Dog End of A Day Gone By" while Ash's smooth, slightly crisp delivery drives "The Game"; but no matter, they tend to share vocal duties on each song (excepting "Suadade", the band's multilayered instrumental) often combining them, and thus giving the lyrics even more dynamic tension. If you're looking for a place to start, try "Express", their follow-up release, but as for me , this is the one I return to the most often.
4.0 von 5 Sternen If you took RUSH and THE MOODY BLUES and put them in the same studio........ 6. Januar 2015

NICE. Kind of a cross between RUSH and THE MOODY BLUES. It's a grandiose big production style of ROCK . It also reminds me a bit of QUEEN. If you're a fan of any one of the aforementioned bands, you won't be disappointed here. The songs are clever and the music is a very appealing blend of Orchestral Rock, Power Blues and Glam Rock that definitely sounds like somebody put RUSH and THE MOODY BLUES in the SAME STUDIO TOGETHER with FREDDIE MERCURY collaborating on the SONG WRITING. Some great songs here: IF THERE'S A HEAVEN ABOVE - INSIDE THE OUTSIDE. The rest are pretty good, too.

I really like this Release, as it has a remixed version of this groups 1 and only big time Hit; Ball of Confusion, which in this new digital age, has become increasingly difficult to locate etc: For this alone, I give out the Strong rating, and it is a good way to preview a musical style, etc, so 1 can see if they may like a group, and hopefully acquire, some of their other stuff also: Lots of times groups like this just fade out, and become a ' musical footnote ' in the history of Pop culture, that sure is the case with these guys: and as such, this is a great way, for a Fan to get to know some of their musical style, etc:

Cheers TRX15

Long ago when my phonograph was replaced with a CD player and sat inactive,I've had this Love and Rockets 12" single "Ball of Confusion"(US mix) in mint condition(still sealed), along with other countless gems of vinyl remaining on the shelves of my music library. Having this recording available via my Amazon Cloud Player allows me countless hours of enjoyment and downloading music from Amazon's Cloud Player to my iphone effortless! Now my CD collection has joined my vinyl and cassette archives.
