3,0 von 5 Sternen 1971 psychedelia - the expectations were high
Bewertet in den USA am20. Oktober 2011
Grossly overrated and overpriced psychedelic act from New York, which recorded their only studio album "Setting Forth... Improvising Against The Future" in 1971. Less than 100 copies of vinyl had been pressed originally, but still it doesn't make it "one of the 10 rarest psychedelic US albums" - music-wise especially.
Might be considered as a must for a completist, or for a die-hard member of the inner circle. Quite interesting as an artefact of USA psychedelia from the 70s - that's correct. $ 90 (or even $ 60) it is not worth - a tenner, maybe, or 20 max - taking into consideration that since 1990 it had been re-issued at least 3 times on CD. Actually, it should be within the same price range as CDs of Gear Fab, Shadocks or Angel Air.
Although Vernon Joynson (Fuzz Acid and Flowers Revisitedconsiders the album as having very high standard, I think that it is pretty mediocre. I would say that the band was still looking for its own identity and distinctive sound - heavy psychedelia it is, with fuzz guitar and absolutely delicious organ. "Strongly harmonic vocals" it hasn't - the voice is unstable, boyish and often off-tune, although vocal harmonies are there - but typical for the 60s. "Angel Dust" is a good track ruined by uninspiring and boring solos, while "Sally" had a potential to enter bottom charts, and the most powerful one is "You're Not There" (my favourite, listen to it on YouTube, and you'll be easily deceived). Covers: Janis Ian's "Society's Child".
The band recorded for a small label (with little or no previous experience in rock music) and given "little or nothing for a budget" - usual sad story.
"Odyssey" was once mentioned in Billboard, and was an opening act for Procol Harum, Vanilla Fudge and Rhinoceros - so did the hordes of other aspiring rock groups.
Apart from "Setting Forth", another album might be still around - "Live at Levittown Memorial Auditorium: 1974" (with identical artwork, but in blue - see images) - really sub-standard recordings of pretty poor sound quality (I would say, as bad as live bootleg of "Rare Bird") - avoid at any cost.
It was a good band, very promising, but didn't live up to expectations.
P.S. Both CDs have very good leaflets and rare photos, and both feature Web-links to Odyssey (2008 resurrection) - if it's the same band, why it didn't die young?
