I think everybody has unique ways of processing and digesting information as is evidenced by the varied strengths we have as learners. I have worked through several jazz books with and without a teacher and some are definitely better than others. I have found Finnerty's book to be an easy, no frills, pragmatic approach to getting the sounds and patterns for jazz improvisation into the ears of the student. There is enough information in this book to keep even the most determined student in the shed for many months.

I am a bass player and would have said at the beginning of this book I was very familiar with the sounds and possibilites of triads/arpeggios just from the nature of constructing walking bass lines and focusing on the harmony. I was surprised at how much I didn't hear until I forced myself to complete the exercises Finnerty has in this book. I am also the sort of student that finds listening and transcribing not as effective for me as it is for others. I can listen to something, transcribe it, then practice it over and over and it will still seem unnatural or forced in my playing. I have discovered that I am very hands on and when I encounter a sound or phrase I personally like, then I retain it instantly and it seems like I start recognizing it in music all around me. Working with the patterns in this book has opened my ears to solos that I had listened to many times before yet didn't really "hear" certain phrases.

The book covers a broad range of exercises beginning with the diatonic scales and incorporating intervals with different embellishments. Finnerty then takes you into pentatonic scales and arpeggios before covering the whole tone, diminished and chromatic scales. I bought the book thinking I would get the most use out of the latter chapters but found I needed just as much exposure to the concepts in the beginning chapters.

The accompanying tracks (CD or mp3 for Kindle) are a nice addition. They are not necessary nor exhaustive but they are useful for motivation. Barry says some helpful things but I found myself listening through the tracks from time to time to maintain motivation! Some of the exercises were not pretty when I first encountered them nor were they easy, but it is quite fulfilling to have mastered an exercise and play it fluidly when days before you had never even heard that sound in your head. Having said that, this book does take work and patience. Initially I tried to master every exercise in every key before moving on but decided I wanted to familiarize myself with the book in less than a decade's time. So now I work through a particular exercise in whatever key I'm practicing in that day and I will re-visit exercises or spend more time on certain ones if needed. I have not even gotten to the chromatic exercises and have practiced out of this book for probably six months now.

The book is only written in treble clef but I don't see any reason for anybody to let that stop them from picking it up. Everyone is capable of learning to read music, rhythmically it is simple and straightforward, you only want to work on a few exercises at a time anyways so don't let that be a barrier.

As jazz improvisers we should strive to expand our vocabulary and the facility by which we play those sounds on our instruments. Barry Finnerty's "The Serious Jazz Practice Book" provides a means to both ends. If you put the effort into learning these exercises and applying them to your favorite compositions I am certain you will increase your ability to create meaningful music in a jazz context. My only caveats are to forewarn you to only pursue studying from this text if you are the type of student who benefits from practicing patterns and exercises and creating your own etudes and methods for applying them to your repertoire. To summarize in a somewhat cliche but appropriate manner, this is not a book that will bring you fish - it will teach you how to catch them on your own. So while it does not necessarily tell you to play this pattern or that scale over a particular change, it absolutely will force you to put these sounds in your ear to use at your disposal for any set of changes you encounter.

The author has done a fantastic job of organizing this book. He starts simple diatonic exercises in chapter one, and moves on to pentatonic and arpeggio studies in chapters two and three. The last arpeggio patterns are cool sounding diminished and augmented arpeggios. In chapters four and five Barry introduces whole-tone and diminished patterns. There is a wealth of great ideas here. The closest book I can think of to this book is Slonimski's 'Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns'. In Slonimski's book you need to really dig to find usable patterns and then figure out how to apply them to changes yourself. In the 'Serious Jazz Practice Book' everything is laid out for you, it is very clear about how to apply the patterns to improvisation.
There is also a CD included with the book that illustrates how some of the patterns sound over chord changes. The thing about the patterns in this book is that they all sound great, without being cliche.

I think that this book will be a great addition to my personal practice routine and I would highly recommend it to any musician wishing to develop a modern Jazz vocabulary.

This is a great book for teaching fundamentals of Jazz. However, I found it hard to follow along because I am new at learning the jazz language. This book is for more advanced jazz musicians, those who may already understand the basics. It was a little too technical for me, and a little over my head at this point. Maybe in a year or two, I can come back and review, and be more ready to tackle this book. I thought I was ready for a book like this, but I wasn't....

This book is definitely an investment and not something of instant gratification. I'm the guy that always asks "Why?" Or "HOW and WHEN do you know to do that?" I've generally regarded myself as a "halfway capable player" but have always been aware of how much I really don't know. So, about 2 months ago I found this book, bought it, and to tell you the truth - it requires a real commitment to learning and practicing to get this material ingrained so it becomes apart of you and not a new road block to get hung-up on thinking about it too much. But it is DEFINITELY worth it. I am no where near finished with it. Really, I am still much closer to the table of contents than the appendix. Lol. But that's a good thing! This book is making me think and work in order to achieve the breakthroughs in my playing. It is also a VERY thick book, I was quite surprised as how much material there is. The author provides extensive examples from standards to reinforce his topics, so you can hear the material being applied. It has been well worth the money spent.

before having this book I was playing what I know(predefined jazz pattern, bebop licks) now because of this book, I know what I am playing. I create my own pattern and understand the intervals better
