5.0 von 5 Sternen Great book for mobile applications 24. Februar 2014

The mobile revolution is here to stay, so plan carefully your online applications to take full advantage of it.
If you plan to build an online application for your organization and you want to adapt it to the mobile world, you have to make the right choices for the Web libraries it is going to use, and Sencha touch is the right choice for you.
Sencha Touch is a high-performance HTML5 mobile application framework, built for enabling world-class user experiences, enables developers to build powerful apps that work on iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and more.
For best using this library, I recommend you to read the last book from 'Packt Publising': 'Sencha Touch 2 Mobile JavaScript Framework' (
This book will teach you to develop web applications that look and feel native on each of the mobile devices using simple examples, design and control the look of your application using a variety of simple style settings and themes, and make your application respond to the user’s touch with events like tap, double tap, swipe, tap and hold, pinch, and rotate.
The first part of the book provides an overview of Sencha Touch and a walk-through of the basics of the library and the basic elements of Sencha Touch common components, such as lists and panels. You will learn to style your user Interface and control the look of your entire application using SASS and Compass.
The second part of the book will explain how to monitor and observe events, manipulate data using models and stores and synchronize your data with a database, creating charts and graphs using Sencha Touch Charts, and compiling your application for different platforms.
Each subject is explained using extensive examples that you can use and adapt for your own purposes, using best practices for structuring your application and its files.
Once you will complete the book you will be able creates a complex applications to address correctly the problems you encounter when developing your applications and web sites for the mobile world.

Its safe to say that not all books can cover the entirety of a topic. I have all the sencha touch 2 books and i was looking for one that explained how to theme your applications (the others dont really do this very well), or at least the way its done beginning from version 2.2 . Though the chapter was short on theming it gave me good ground as to how to approach theming my applications. Another great thing i loved about this book is the chapter on how to communicate with an API like flicker, AND another chapter on how to build your own api and have it communicate with you sencha app. I didnt give this book 5 stars because it doesnt cover MVC in-depth. The chapter on creating a flicker find app is all MVC, but many aspect where left out. The book also doesnt go into how to use profiles (which can be an important thing, depending on the app you are building).

I've worked with javascript, php, html, css, and I've been using a lot of jquery bootstrap lately. I wanted to see Sencha in work for mobile application development and this book didn't disappoint. While I could see why one comment wanted to see more MVC application flow, it's not that difficult to get this going if you do a lot of MVC work, I remember taking my modular approach to a more OOP style and now finally everything I program is modular and using MVC as a framework. The default app that you build to search Flickr with is pretty neat and it didn't take as much as I had anticipated. The book starts great and gets you right into learning the Sencha framework.

Starting off you get right into building the foundation, while the author walks you through planning out your application. Setup was really simple and I had no issues following the guide for Windows. From working with data to building controllers and events it was all straight forward, and while it feels like an ios app I suppose for using the application on any medium is well worth it.
