Schon auf dem Cover verspricht Smith "5000 Words-a-Day, Every Day". Was soll ich sagen?

HASH(0x8f82a0b4) von 5 Sternen One of the better Write in Bursts books, 17. Juni 2014
Von Glen Ford author of 101 Writing Tweets - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I was fully prepared to hate this book.

First off let me state that I write on this topic (I have several books published on this topic). In any other industry this would make us competitors.

Generally I'm not in favour of the "write in bursts" or the "make a list of topics" schools of writing. I came into writing books from technical writing and training, both of which have a very low tolerance for failure and produce book-length (or longer) materials as a matter of course. Typically these "speed writing" books are written by people who come into the field from the journalism, "I'm creating great art", or "brochure/white paper as book" backgrounds. None of which are particularly risk-free when it comes to writing a book length piece if only because they focus on producing short-pieces which is a completely different task.

This is not that type of book and I found I loved this book.

Rick provides a rational, workable method for using these techniques to get the most out of your writing. Even if you choose to plan your book using other methods, the series of steps he recommends will help you to increase your writing speed and output. The techniques are simple, easy to use and progressive. You may start out having a problem reaching 250 words (a page) a day but by the end you should be reaching 5,000 words a day.

While he doesn't deal with any of the problems holistically, he does focus on the most common issues and provides valid solutions and guidance without suggesting any of the off-topic ideas (such as Writing prompts) that many others seem to delight in. He even provides several mini-courses/exercises that will help you to overcome your resistance and start using his techniques.

My only issues with the book are on the level of "250 words (a page) is too large for a single point. When outlining you need to be down around the 100 word or paragraph level". Even I have to admit that's pretty niggledy-piggledy to base a disagreement on.

If you are hoping to become a full-time or serious part-time writer, you need to read this book. You need to have a well-thumbed copy of this book on your desk and a copy on your kindle for quick reference. It will help you to improve your writing speed and get your book written.

In short ... BUY IT.

HASH(0x8f82dcd8) von 5 Sternen First Step to Self Publishing Success is Getting the Book Written! 9. Juni 2014
Von Carla Davis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

And for getting the book on the page, this is exactly the guide I was looking for! As a fiction writer, I am always looking for ways to get my story onto the page faster (largely because I’m about 10 novels behind on the things in my head) and this book really gives a lot of great concrete advice (and recommendations for other relevant books) to help you get things done. I like how Mr. Smith take concepts from Nanowrimo’s Chris Baty and then expands on them so you can actually write a book that can be used for something other than a digital doorstop. Also, he gives very clear advice that pertains to both fiction and non-fiction writers, and gives clear examples of how each technique can be applied to both fiction and nonfiction.

I think my favorite part is when Mr. Smith talks about your “Inner Chimp”, aka, that part of you that is addicted to Facebook and snacking, and how to reign that part of your psyche in (and when to let it out). This book is really a wonderful resource! It’s clear Mr. Smith is an author who has struggled with the same issues of procrastination, disorganization and despair to which we all sometimes succumb, and he has compiled an excellent resource that is immediately applicable to your writing life. I am excited to try his techniques and get myself writing an extra 1,000 (quality) words/day. Great book! Highly recommended!

Writing 5000 words a day may sound like a pipe dream to some writers; heck scribbling a sentence or two on a page and calling it a day can be claimed as a triumph, but we're not fiddling around here, we're authors and we not only want to be published, but be paid. This comes from consistency and quality, two of the essential linch-pins emphasized in Rick Smith's book, Mile High Word Count.

Whether you're writing a novel or a non-fiction book Rick illustrates the details on how to accomplish this goal by creating a foundation that brings order to the chaos in getting your project out in a timely manner. This book is more than a word-count how-to guide, but a productivity resource tool that creates a foundation that every author should have in their writer's tool box.

Mile-High Word-Count not only covers a logical step by step process of how to accomplish a 5000 word page count, but includes such topics as Procrastination, Your Inner Chimp, Organizational Skills, Kick-Off Strategies, The Hit Writing System and much, much more. This is a treasure chest for writers who are serious about getting their books out into the marketplace while impacting readers with consistent excellence.

Are there guarantees? Of course not, but if you're stymied and can't seem to get any place, don't know where to start, then start here and take off like a cruise missile directed at your target of success. Need proof... Okay click on Rick Smith's Amazon Author Page and check out his prolific BEST SELLERS that are not there collecting cyber dust, but buckarinos, thousands of them a month on a system of principals that he's used himself and that is now available to you. Ask yourself this, if you had a catalog of best selling books bringing you in thousands of dollars on a monthly basis what would it mean to your writing and your future as a successful author in demand? You know the answer now go write your Best Seller.

HASH(0x8f82dca8) von 5 Sternen Another Gem from Rick Smith 1. Juni 2014
Von Miles Cobbett - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Thanks Rick for writing this Gem of a How-To for Authors book. Your easy-going conversational writing style fits me perfectly as a reader. Your straight-forward approach to the business of being an Author reminds me of my old roommate in college, Chris Menges. Chris was a genius-level mechanical engineering student, who showed me how to study for just 55 minutes before taking a quick 5 minute break to "stretch our legs" and "get fresh blood to our brains..." and then right back to 55 minutes of study, and then another 5 minute break to stretch our legs again -sometimes with a quick sprint around the building, or an impromptu elapsed time race up four flights of stairs. My GPA that year jumped enormously. Your five-day Author workweek and two vacation days off also reminded me of Chris and a giant poster that he hung in our dorm room. The poster declared it to be a "Room Rule Violation" to have "a text book open on a Friday or Saturday night." Chris maintained that we all need to have a weekend off from work and to have something Special to look forward to all week like take a Date to the movies, or out to have coffee or eat diner.
Well done Mr. Rick Smith, well done!
You have inspired me to get back in front of the computer and get another book ready for publishing :)

As a writer who occasionally struggles with motivation, this is the book that I've been missing. The info is well presented but more to the point, it has got me writing again...
