HASH(0x9c56a498) von 5 Sternen Great preparation material for CCNA Security 22. November 2014
Von Rolf E. Carson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
This book does a great job of covering all the details you need to understand the material and pass the exam. I passed CCNA Security today with a score of 969. My one problem with the book is that the illustrations of ASDM and CCP configurations are far too small to make out. Other than that I very much recommend this book, especially at the current price. Do what I did, get the book, then use the PearsonITCertification coupon in the back to get the Premium Edition PDF and the 173 practice test questions for only $16. The practice questions cover the material very well, however, they only include multiple choice and multiple selection examples with no simulation environment. It does not hurt having a good simulation environment to really drill in commands and be ready for technical interviews. If you can find Packet Tracer, that makes for good practice. Boson's NetSim 9 for CCNA is excellent though at a high price--it also is missing some commands within the list for CCNA Security. GNS3 takes quite a bit to setup, so I have not used it yet--probably once I get into CCNP studies that will be setup. I had a great deal of help from Chris Bryant's Udemy course on CCNA Security too. Please let me know if you have any questions--this is not the easiest Cisco cert to get, however, it is well worth your time in the current job/IT climate.

HASH(0x9c56f0d8) von 5 Sternen Good book but topics missing 13. April 2013
Von Gerard A. Palmeri - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I successfully completed the CCNA Security exam today and I thought I'd review this book while it was fresh in my mind.

In general, my one-line review would be that the book is really good for the topics it covers BUT Cisco has added some topics since this book has been published (for example, PVLANs) so you need to visit either the Cisco Learning Network website page OR the Cisco Press site to get the latest syllabus. Another caveat is that I think one should have the CCNA material fresh in one's mind while reading this book. The authors do not review the material that one should have covered in the CCNA. If this isn't fresh in your mind, you may have gaps in understanding.

To conclude on a positive note, I really enjoy Keith's writing style and enthusiasm for teaching, training and computer networking and, in general, I think he (and his co-author) did a really good job covering a LOT of material in a well-organized and well-written way. It was good enough for me to pass the exam but others may need to supplement.
HASH(0x9c56cf9c) von 5 Sternen Absolutely Fundamental Resource 4. April 2015
Von Richard Robinson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Great book. I mean, anything with Keith Barker's name attached to it is going to be a good resource. The man is just tops. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there is absolutely no mention of VACLs, IKE Phase 1.5, PVLANs, or PVLAN Edge Ports. I had to research those topics independently, and I would suggest you do the same. I could understand if they were mentioned only sparingly, but they weren't covered AT ALL (and you will almost certainly run across some of these topics on the exam, I think).

Overall, it was a much better read than Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security by Catherine Paquet. While you should use that as a companion to this guide, I found it really dry and boring, and ended up only reading it twice (I tend to go through reading material in excess of four times, when studying for certifications). The writing is succinct and interesting, without being OVERLY noninclusive of too much (with the exception of the aforementioned topics). I never found it boring or difficult to understand.

Good luck and carpe diem!

HASH(0x9c56f0a8) von 5 Sternen MASTER THE CCNA SECURITY EXAM!! 12. August 2012
Von COSMIC TRAVELER - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Are you preparing for the 640-554 Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security exam? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Keith Barker and Scott Morris, have done an outstanding job of writing book that improves your awareness and knowledge of network security.

Barker and Morris, begin by covering the need for the building blocks of network and information security, threats to our networks today, and the fundamental principles of secure network design. Then, the authors review risk analysis, management and security policies. The authors also cover the securing of borderless networks, controlling and containing data loss. They continue by covering the securing of the network using the network foundation protection approach, the management plane, the control plane, and the data plane. Next, the authors review the Cisco Configuration Professional features and the GUI, setting up new devices, CCP building blocks, and CCP audit features. Then, they describe management traffic and how to make it more secure and the implementation of security measures to protect the management plane. The authors also describe the role of Cisco Secure ACS and the two primary protocols used with it, RADIUS and TACACS. They continue by reviewing VLANs and trunking fundamentals, spanning-tree fundamentals, and common Layer 2 threats and how to mitigate them. Next, the authors cover the Ipv6. Then, they discuss the design considerations for threat mitigation and containment; and, the hardware, software, and services used to implement a secure network. The authors also cover the benefits and fundamentals for access control lists, implementing Ipv4 ACLs a packet filters, and implementing Ipv6 ACLs as packet filters. They continue by reviewing the firewall concepts and the technologies used by them, the function of Network Address Translations, including its building blocks, and the guidelines and considerations for creating and deploying firewalls. Next, the authors discuss the operational and functional components of the IOS Zone-Based Firewall and how to configure and verify the IOS Zone-Based Firewall. Then, they cover the Adaptive Security Appliance family and features, ASA firewall fundamentals, and configuring the ASA. The authors also compare intrusion prevention systems to intrusion detection systems and cover how to identify malicious traffic on the network, manage signatures, and monitor and manage alarms and alerts. Next, they cover the features included in the IOS-based IPS and the installing of the IPS feature; working with signatures in IOS-based IPS; and, managing and monitoring IPS alarms. The authors continue by covering what VPNs are, why they are used and the basic ingredients of cryptography. Then, they cover the concepts, components, and operations of the public key infrastructure and include an example of putting the pieces of PKI to work. The authors also cover the concepts, components, and operations of IPsec and how to configure and verify IPsec. Next, they cover the planning and preparation that is needed to implement an IPsec site-to-site VPN, implementing and verifying the IPsec site-to-site VPN. The authors continue by covering the functions and use of SSL for VPNs, configuring SSL clientless VPN on the ASA, and configuring the full SSL AnyConnect VPN on the ASA. Finally, they identify the tools that are needed for the final exam preparation to help you develop an effective study plan.

The goal of this most excellent book is to help you increase your skill level related to the implementation of network security. Perhaps more importantly, this great book can be used in preparing for the CCNA Security certification exam.
HASH(0x9c56cf54) von 5 Sternen Book is great, publisher additions such as practice tests not so good. 10. Juni 2015
Von Roger A. Hermann - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
The content of the book is great. Clearly written and really explains things in an understandable way. My only complaint is the same for all of the Cisco books I have read. They don't give enough guidance on how to prepare for the exam although this one is the best I have seen so far. For example you need to have access to the tools described in the book to get proficient at knowing where to navigate in the tool (CCP). This should be clearly indicated if the goal is to get users proficient. The questions that are on the practice exam and for that matter on the additional exams that can be purchase for an addition price are not realistic to how the actual exam questions are structured or presented. I don't know why Pearson is doing such a poor job with their test engine. To summarize big thumbs up for Barker and Morris and their excellently written book and a big thumbs down for Pearson for disappointing quality of their practice exams.
