Kurzbeschreibung

Consulting may be defined as the art of influencing people at their request. The Secrets of Consulting takes you behind the scenes of that art, explaining in detail why the world of consulting seems so irrational, and some very practical steps you can take to make it more rational. Topics include: Gaining control of change, marketing and pricing your services, what to do when they resist your ideas, and more.

The Secrets of Consulting has been used in dozens of different fields. If you are a consultant, or ever use a consultant, this book is for you. The author draws on his 50+ years of consulting experience to share his secrets about the often irrational world of consulting. "This is a great book. Period! ...this advice is clearly applicable to more than just consulting; it is applicable to life in general." "The book is truly wonderful. A must have!" - Amazon reviews

Synopsis

In this book the author offers a personal tour of the often irrational world of consulting. He chooses a storytelling format, deriving rules, laws and principles from his anecdotes to make the points memorable. His style is informal and personal, the secrets applicable to other disciplines. This book does not tell you how to become a consultant but midst the wit and humour are practical steps to become more effective in this highly competitive profession. Among the topics covered are pricing and marketing your services, keeping ahead of the client, avoiding traps, finding alternative approaches, establishing trust, measuring your effectiveness and dealing with client resistance.

As the subtitle of this book suggests, it contains a lot of thoughts about how and when you should give advice. It also says why this is the case.
You have to know: as a programmer I never understood why nothing ever happened when I pointed out a problem. I never understood why people wouldn't embrace my idea to solve their problem. I hoped I would find answers to this (and similar) questions in the book - and I wasn't disappointed!
The book itself is well written, humorous and has a lot of little stories that illustrate the points the author wants to make. After reading the book I found variations of those stories happening in my environment - and by remembering the stories, I was sometimes able to remember the advice.
I really enjoyed to read this book and quickly finished it. I'm sure I will reread it again some time in the future.
There is so much good advice in this book and it is such a quick read, that I recommend you get a copy yourself. You probably get your moneys worth even if you are not a consultant (which I am not either) or planning to become one.

This title by Weinberg is *THE* book to have if you fill any type of consulting role. Don't worry if you aren't a full time, dreaded consultant - you'll find plenty of good rules on giving and receiving advice in this work. I have personally purchased 5 copies of this over the years because my copies seem to "disapear" as soon as I tell anyone about it.
Every single person who picks up this book on my recommendation takes the time to let me know how much they liked it - and that says something about Jerry's work. Because Jerry gets his points across by telling stories, this book is the perfect read for a flight, a few minutes between meetings, or when you can't take another seventeen noun, passive voice sentence that most IT texts use.
A must buy for anyone who works in teams, gives advice, or ....well, it's for anyone.

The thing is that he knows that by titling a chapter "Rudy's Law of Rutabega" rather than titling it "How to Keep Problems in Perspective" he has helped you to remember his points. They keep coming to me when I'm in a situation. I must have explained Rudy's Law of Rutabega a few hundred times to friends, family, and clients.
Whether you are employed by a company, or you are an independant consultant, you are asked to give and take advice, and to solve problems. As a programmer, I found this book very useful, but the book does not really have anything to do with programming, or consulting. It's more about dealing with the problems, giving and accepting advice, and maintaining a helpful [and professional] demeanour in the midst of an essentially human [and therefore not essentially technical] set of problems.
Best advice: never promise to solve a problem. Promise 10% improvement to a working system at best. A doubling of productivity/throughput makes you you look good, at someone else's else's expense. That person then becomes your enemy. Not worth it.

I first read this book in 1987 when I was working as an independent computer consultant. It quite literally changed my life. Never before had I read the wisdom which this book presents. The lessons presented can be applied to any field, or any endeavor you choose. I currently work in the social services field but I still find myself going back to this book on more than one occasion. I HIGHLY recommend that anyone considering a career change buy this book. It will remain on your bookshelf forever.

Yes, I read this book years ago but somehow lost my copy. It's one of the few books I have ever bothered to buy a second time since the information and ideas are timeless. Also great as a reference work when you need a new shot at a nagging problem.

The book is helpful, interesting, and contains quite a few valuable insights that can only come from experience. For that very reason, inexperienced people will miss it all, btw. So, overall it's not bad. At the same time, I've noticed that every time I read something by Weinberg, I have a feeling of displeasure for some reason, even though it is hard for me to put my finger on it. What is it? My best try has got to be that he doesn't write well and needs to be energetically edited. The general tone is condescending, fuddy-daddy'ish, frequently ponderous, and vague. The humour is a bit on the unfunny side. He mentions Russell in the bibliography, and by golly, he could learn from him how to write concisely, *clearly*, with good logic and all parts connecting.
There may be something else beside that, but as I said, it's hard to put a finger on what exactly it is. It's kind of a good book, but I wish it was reworked so it's not as annoying to read. Therefore I gave it a 3. In other words, this is a mediocre book that is worth buying <g>. Now, *that's* clear writing, isn't it <g>?
