Emily Donovan doesn’t have a romantic bone in her body.

At least, that’s what her friends Ryan and Ashley keep telling her. They’re convinced her bad luck with men is directly related to her life-long lack of interest in all things romantic. When Emily’s latest relationship crashes and burns, she decides to go along with her friends’ plans for a romance research project. Sure, the idea that she’ll have better luck if she learns about the great romances of literature and film seems a little silly, but Emily figures it can’t hurt.

In no time at all, Emily finds herself buried under a mountain of romance novels, chick flicks, and sappy love songs, hopeful that her hard work will pay off with true love. When she meets Greg, Ashley and Ryan are convinced she’s found prince charming—after all, he’s rich, handsome, and totally into Emily. What more could she want? And why does it seem that her friend Elliot isn’t exactly happy for her?

Faced with misunderstandings, miscommunications, and a seemingly endless string of missteps, she is nevertheless determined to give true love a try. In doing so, Emily will eventually find that true romance, the kind that lasts, has little to do with stereotypes or clichés, and everything to do with finding out what’s in her own heart.

This is book #1 of the Love Story series. Don't miss the sequel, An Unexpected Love Story, available now!

The story wasn't mine at all.
Although the premise sounds fun, the delivery isn't well executed.
The writing is repetitive, the characters are between bland to terrible, and there's neither a sense of humour nor romance to her writing, strictly IMO.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Cute premise, but so obvious and predictable 16. Juni 2013
Von Vox Libris - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
When you want to learn how to do something, you consult experts, right? That's the advice that Emily's friends give her when they diagnose her as being clinically unromantic. She needs to immerse herself in romance novels and find herself a man.

Emily gamely - albeit a tad reluctantly - agrees. She reads books and watches chick flicks, and along the way attempts to apply what she learned to her love life. In a "meet cute" sort of set up, she runs into Greg, a handsome, successful prospect who adores her. Emily's friends think SCORE, but part of Emily wonders. Is he the one? Were the novels and movies right? Then there is her friend Elliott, who seems quite unimpressed with Greg. What's up with him?

If you already know how this ends, bravo. Then again, the ending is trumped so loudly and clearly as to render the reading of the novel fairly useless. I've read lots of books that give away their endings early on, but they make up for it by being entertaining, by having characters I like and wish I could get to know.

That is not the case here.

Faithful readers, I was bored. Bored, I tell you. There is so little about this book to recommend that I'm hard pressed to justify the two stars. It's cute, I suppose, and the premise is also cute. But it's just so transparent. That's what turns me off more than anything. There is no mystery or pull to keep reading.

If you want a mindless book with a cute little gimmick, then you could do worse than this. I guess I just wanted more.

Thanks to NetGalley for the preview.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Terrific contemporary romance! 4.5 stars, grade: A- 19. Januar 2013

"In Search of a Love Story" was a delightful, entertaining book that I enjoyed reading very much. The reason that I didn't rate it five stars was, aside from being a little bit predictable as to who Emily would end up with in the end, I couldn't quite believe that a strong, independent woman like Emily would turn into such a marshmallow for such a long time in order to make her relationship with Greg work. Aside from those two things, though, this book was very well written with beautiful prose that flowed easily from beginning to end. The entire cast of characters were very well-developed and three-dimensional. The dialogues were crisp, sparkling, and authentic; they made the characters' personalities well-defined and very real. Along with the dialogues, I thought the fantastic imagery gave vivid descriptions which made me feel like I was sharing in the people's adventures and emotions. This is changing topics but I really wanted to point out that I absolutely loved Emily and her friends having no problems with Ryan's homosexuality. He was a little bit stereotyped but that didn't interfere with the interrelationships within the group. There was no explicit sex in this book and I don't remember any profanity either. (I actually read this book several weeks ago but got caught up with other things before I could review it.) When I skimmed over a few chapters, not only did I recall lots of details but I remembered immediately how much pleasure reading the book brought to me. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes reading love stories that are warmhearted and fun to let into your life. Happy reading!

Ugh, maybe it's just me here but I found this book to be more irritating then anything else. This book was super predictable and..well, lame. I couldn't relate to any of the characters. The main character seems to have no back bone and apparently just does whatever she is told. She stays with a guy basically because he has money and she thinks he is out of her league. So that means he can tell her what to wear, how to act, what she will like, etc. Really? Their interactions made me feel awkward, and did not come off cute in any way. Her friends Ryan and Ashley were equally annoying. They are supposed to be her close friends, but only want for her what they would want for themselves, not seeing it's not what she wants or what is best for her. The author tried to work in a side romance relationship with Chris and Ashley, but most of the book I was waiting for them to break up because they didn't seem good together. Luckily she has one person who see's her for who she is, but don't worry, he's more of a background character-you won't get much information on him.

A very cute she never knew what was before her eyes kind of romantic love story. A young physical therapist who has the greatest friends in the world, but never has any luck with men. She has finally decided to totally give up on dating until she is saved by who she thinks might be her knight in shinning armor. But is he?
3.0 von 5 Sternen A Few Too Many Tough Girl Tropes for Me 20. Oktober 2014

Predictable plot? Check. Predictable characters? Check. Predictable ending? Check.

That's how you get only three stars. It's not BAD, nope, and some of it was fun to read. In fact, I think it hit all the beats you want in a romance novel. So I didn't feel like throwing my kindle against a wall or anything. And I did finish it. (I don't finish them all, believe me.)

But yes, I wanted a bit more than just the predictable "tough girl with no sense of romance" up against her romantic girlfriend and gay guy friend (who, even HE, has more romantic bones in HIS body than Emily Donovan). And it was really obvious who she'd finally end up with - big d'oh! Of course she should end up with him. He's perfect for her.

The most fun of the story, to tell the truth, was Emily's interactions with her clients (she's a physical therapist) many of whom are cantankerous old men and women - all of whom seem to have something to say to her about her lack of a love life. But at least they speak from an accumulation of life experiences and they seem to truly adore Emily.

One of the issues I have with a female character like this is that she is the new trope in romance novels. In fact, in my own, I've had a hard time resisting the urge to write her, too. In fact, now that I'm thinking about it, I better re-think some of my main character's traits. But it's the "tough independent girl" who is just too . . . .(fill in the blank - busy, focused, damaged, etc.) to see what is right in front of her nose - the good man. So she careens from one bad date to another and then eventually she wakes up to find HIM.

Now it's not a bad trope and frankly, it probably mirrors some real life out there, but for me the more realized heroine is both independent and able to be vulnerable with some people. She isn't over the edge abrasive to others or so damaged that it almost takes a caveman-like approach to get her attention (that is, a bonk on the old noggin - not that I'm advocating violence.)

So I suppose this is a note to myself as a budding author, and to other authors - keep it real. Give them flaws, but also a lot of good qualities, else we won't be able to relate to or care about them. And we won't want to throw the book (or kindle) against a wall, either.
