I was looking for a solution to improve on my Creative X-Fi Surround USB with a new Beyerdynamic DT770 80 Ohms. The creative actually sounds quite good, so much that when I tried the Fiio E10K, it actually sounded worse (clearly better on some aspect, but slightly worse globally). I tried a very cheap Topping NX2, and it worked great, and sounded mostly the same as the creative, but with better bass (I think). Then the SMSL M2, which actually sounded fantastic, but got immediate problems (pauses and scratches) on the 2 pc I tried. I guess it is too small for what it tries to do.Then the SMSL M3 is just what I was looking for. It sounds better than the Creative (not much, mostly better detail and better bass, very transparent), and works without any installation on all computers I tried (Windows 7 and Windows 10), and also on iPad and with Android. On Android I had to use a USB-dedicated player, otherwise the bit resolution defaults to 96bits, and it plays strangely. After the use of USB Player pro, it somehow worked also with normal players. With Android I will continue to use the Topping NX2 for the DT770 (my Android cannot drive them properly, but on IEM it does not make a big difference (not enough to justify attaching something to the phone) ).The headphone output is quite powerful, with the DT770 I am at 1/4 of the pot. As written in other comments the M3 ignores the volume on your PC, so you use the volume pot on the unit, but it is very good this way, the pot is very smooth and is easy to operate while listening (but the position indicator is nearly invisible). The line-out also has fixed output, so you use them on systems that have a volume control on their own. I simply used them on the VX2 (which can be used as an headphone amp), so could verify that the M3 DAC is very good, as it still sounded great, and the headphone amp is very good as well, as it did not sound as great as directly from the M3.Of course it is much better than most integrated sound cards (the Creative is already a big upgrade).I actually don't think I need anything better now. The difference between that and the Topping NX2 is already small, and any kind of default I hear is generally in the recording (i.e. I hear it first with the M3, as it is very clear, but then find it with anything else). Of course my hearing is far from perfect.
