I’m reviewing the Kindle edition of this book. This is the most incoherent and chaotic history book I ever came across. It certainly lacks proper editing. This is a pity because facts and contents are generally correct. There is only a lack of of organisation and the chronological order is poor. There are lots of spelling mistakes e.g. „Denikin“ and „Deniken“ on one and the same page. Also, the photographs and pictures are sometimes unrelated to the text.

The Russian Revolution is remembered as the catalyst for the bloody conflict between the Reds and the Whites as each side tried to gain control of the country. But it was far from being so simple. The conflict did not only involve the Russians. The author contemplates whether the Russians could capitulate to their previous enemy and whether in fact Russia was ever in any condition to carry on the fight even before the revolution began, examining whether a collapse of the war in the east would lead to Allied defeat in the west. The effect of the revolution and the civil war went far beyond the borders of the enormous Russian Empire and far beyond the end of the Great War and the civil war, not least of all whom the millions of subject peoples and races supported: the Reds, the Whites, the Germans, or none. The conflict in Russia between 1917 and 1922 is a fascinating and complex period of history but the brutally colorful cast of characters Tsar Nicholas II, Brusilov, Kerensky, Lenin, Trotsy, Stalin and Churchill would make a violent impact on the world stage for a century to come.

Paxton MilkReviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 June 20222.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject reduced to superficial levels
Written in the rote style of a Sixth Form dissertation, the author jogs through the grotesque and deeply unsettling truth about the Civil War, Western intervention, political bungling, and human suffering on an epic scale, barely stopping long enough to mention sources, evidence, or arguments.
Superficial introduction to the subject, lots of typos and repetitive prose. It would probably suit someone with a passing interest in the subject or with a uncritical nature.
RudolfReviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 September 20194.0 out of 5 stars A well-researched historical account of a terrible time of change in Russia
With the Russian revolution occurring so soon and mingling with the chaos of the First World War, almost everyone suffered some form of hell. This was independent of which side was winning. Atrocities were committed by both sides. Those not directly involved also suffered starvation and summary execution. Illustrated with numerous relevant photographs.
