?As a History teacher this particular book would come in handy to me whilst teaching certain units but I also feel it is a nice way of introducing map work into a history classroom? I think it is well worth the money. It is interesting and is a different way that I would now consider using to research areas of World War One. The book is well presented, well organised and very easily readable.?? History Teaching Review

Kurzbeschreibung

From its origins to its terrible legacy, the tortuous course of the Great War is vividly set out in a series of 174 fascinating maps. Together the maps form a comprehensive and compelling picture of the war that shattered Europe, and illustrate its military, social, political and economic aspects. Beginning with the tensions that already existed, the atlas covers:

  • the early months of the war: from the fall of Belgium to the fierce fighting at Ypres and Tannenberg:

  • the developing war in Europe: from Gallipoli to the horrors of the Somme and Verdun

  • life at the front: from living underground, the trench system and the mud of Passchendaele to the war graves

  • technology and the new horrors: from phosgene gas attacks to submarines, tanks and mines

  • the home fronts: from German food riots to the air defence of Britain, the Russian Revolution and the collapse of Austria-Hungary

  • the aftermath: from war debts and war deaths to the new map of Europe.

This third edition contains an entirely new section depicting the visual remembrance of the war; a fascinating visitors' guide to the memorials that commemorate the tragedy of the Somme.

I now own all of the Martin Gilbert Routledge Atlases.

If you love history and prefer to understand history in context than these are all for you.

They are not a low cost item but they are a high quality item.
What sets these apart is the typeset and the quality of the paper and ink.

If you are a fan of the Atlas genre you know full well that all maps are not created equally. Sure these are in so called black and white. They are however of such a quality that the ink shines. Each note from the Key is in a different shade of black so they really show up well.

These are not like what you would find in a History Text. History texts books require either looking at footnotes and thumbing to the back of the book or looking at a half page map that is overdone in color format etc......rendering study of the map difficult and disjointed.

If you want to know about World War One then get this Atlas. I use these along with books on my iPad to gain insight. I find myself looking at a map and then going to Wikipedia or even buying or borrowing a book from my library collection to learn more.

I can see what my two Great Grandparents went through during the War.

History can be interesting.

I used this Atlas to amplify historical accounts. The back and forth over a very small area, was difficult to follow. A topographical map would have helped. It nevertheless showed what happened in the rest of the world, valuable because otherwise WW1 is just incredible slaughter over part of Belgium. The activities of Churchill and Hitler were informative.

The Kindle version stinks. It is bad in the 7 inch tablet format (Samsung Galaxy Tab Kindle App) & even worse in the 8.9 inch tablet format (Kindle Fire HD 8.9). The maps lack detail & the text needs the use of a magnifying glass to read on both tablets that I use.

You may want to try the print version, but the Kindle version is a true stinker.

I once spurned this book because the maps look rather, well, bland. And they do. But they are excellent. This little atlas gives an great insight in this global conflict, not only the military operations, but diplomatic, economic, industrial aspect, both the utter scale of it and the scope in which it affected the fighting and neutral nations and their populations.

There are maps on the road to war maps on what happened after the war. Maps of the war in the air. maps on the war in at sea. Many maps show the ability to think outside the box, but still says a lot about this horrible war.

The one thing that I do not like, is that it is a bit anglo-centric. I say a bit, because this is a truly global atlas of the war, but still. Still do not detract from the fact that this is a very insightful atlas full of little gems.
