Kane Matthews, Alpha of his small wolf pack in Cloverleah has been raised to believe that mates are not possible for gay men and has lived his life accordingly. Kicked out of his home pack years before because of his sexual orientation Kane has built a solid and comfortable life for himself in the small town of Cloverleah.
Imagine his surprise when an unscheduled visit to the small town's diner unleashes a flood of emotions in the man he didn't think possible - not least of all, lust. But finding out it is possible for wolf shifters to have gay mates is just one of the things that Kane has to overcome if he is to have the forever future he has been hoping for.

Shawn Bailey never expected to find his mate. He is just too different - an "Other" who has the power to instill fear in any other shifter. After spending ten years on the run from his Alpha father he spends most days just trying to stay alive. When a
chance encounter brings him face to face with his mate Shawn has to decide if the man in front of him is worth staying for.

But with hunters, Alpha challenges, Kane's parents and a smitten Alpha from another pack all interfering in Kane and Shawn's budding romance, not to mention some surprising answers about Shawn's own unique talents can these two true mates find the happily ever after they are looking for?

Warning: Some people may find the content of this book objectionable. Includes m/m, graphic sexual situations, a short BDSM scene, strong language and shifter/magic themes.

I am a fan of stories that take place outside our everyday experience and horizon - therefore science fiction, fantasy and so called paranormal are among my favorite genres. The crux thereby is that in the field of M/M romances these stories are abundantly represented, but very often poorly written.

Not so in this case. Lisa Oliver has a pleasantly blooming fantasy, although she remains at that logical (as logical as logic works in fairy tales) and loses neither the red thread of the narrative nor the elaboration of the characters. She also has a pleasant, flowing writing style, a good command of the language and solid grammar.

"The Reluctant Wolf" is a fulminant start in the story of a rather small pack of gay wolves. It's all there, what you will also find in other so-called shifter stories: the alpha, the omega, the various other wolf types with their characteristica, the soulmates, the bikes, the classic conflicts with homosexuality and the otherness, but also a little more mysterium, magic and extraordinary surprises than usual.

In Lisas world the wolves - the paranormals as such - have BDSM tendencies which they live or play out in clubs, so in case you are totally against tripping over a St. Andrew's cross in your novels, you might get more anxiety than you like. But that is only a minor aspect within the Cloverleah pack. More interesting and significant is the modernity of the group where togetherness and loyalty are founded on friendship and affection, and the alpha is only the first among equals. Furthermore with every new story and every new mate the diversity of the group increases and the challenges they face diversify.

It is a really nice book to read that doesn't just downsize itself to the typical run of the mill storyline but has believable characters with real conflict.

Uninspired story, stupid storyline, dumb dialogues and not a single interesting or nice character... It was a really boring read and hey, it wasn't even cheap!
Normally, I really like shifter stories, but this one is an exception, a big one.
I am sure it's not a surprise that I warn you away - not only from this book but the whole series.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Setting It Aside...For Now 1. April 2014

I usually give any book I purchase until the 50% to pull me in, grab my attention, and keep me reading. While Ms. Oliver is obviously a talented storyteller, the writing in this effort needs a lot of work. I'm not calling this a DNF's more of a "DNF yet" one. The reason being is I'd really like to find out happens to these characters. I just need to step away before the flaws in the book completely overwhelm me.

Before I get to the flaws...some bright spots. As I said above, the story Ms. Oliver is attempting to tell is pretty engaging. Shaun's backstory parallels with that of a lot gay teens even in this day and age. He seems the most thought out and well developed character, and it's quite easy to empathize with him. In addition, the world-building is a fresh take on traditional werewolf lore. Though the logic falls flat sometimes. For instance, Shaun's magic seems really advanced (i.e. able to materialize objects out of thin air, healing, etc.) so I couldn't understand why he wasn't able to dispatch the hunters without breaking a sweat. Despite this I thought, overall, the myths and paranormals within the book weren't all that bad.

As for what stopped me reading at the 50% mark...first and foremost is the dialogue. I think another reviewer has mentioned that the story is set in the American west, but the characters speech patterns, dialect, and slang are decidedly British. The disconnect is jarring and will cause you to do a double-take. For a while I tried to internally translate every "arse" into an "ass"...every "lounge" into a "living room"...every "mate" into a "whatever?!?", but it just got really tiring. Also, the conversation between the characters doesn't flow naturally, and comes off a bit stilted and simplistic in some place.

Another point is the editing. While I applaud anyone with the guts to write a novel and put it out into the world for consumption, some thought to editing must be paid before doing so. For every grammatical and punctuation error that can be skimmed over while still staying within the flow of the story, there are 5 that hit you over the head and cause you to re-read whole passages for clarity.

Finally, it seemed every chapter began and ended with a sex scene (with another thrown in the middle for good measure). I'm all for some hot man-on-man humpin', but the sheer quantity (paired with the aforementioned mental gymnastics in translating some of the slang) got to be tedious. Also, some of the sex scenes just didn't make sense considering the events that bookmarked them. For instance, the pack finds out a gang of hunters is trying to kill Shaun (after having just shot him), and Shaun and Kane decide it'd be a great time for a bike ride and romp in a mountaintop field?!?

Like I said, I haven't finished reading The Reluctant Wolf yet. Please take this review for what it's worth as you're deciding whether to dive into it or not. I can say that this is the first book I've ever purchased that made me research Amazon's return/refund policy. The major reason for that is I believe this book is EXTREMELY overpriced at $5 (Kindle version). Ms. Oliver should consider lower the price tag to $2.99 to make it more palatable.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Reluctant reader of future work 30. Mai 2016

I must admit to not knowing the exact path a novel takes from the author's desk to the Kindle sales area. I would assume that the author has both editors and proofreaders at hand to assist in the process. However, if such were paid by the author, I'm afraid it was a waste of money.

I was entertained by the story of Kane and Shawn but the overwhelming number of misused words, lack of punctuation, using possessive forms of words as plurals, misusing words, e.g., to/too, by inappropriately interchanging them in the story, made for very difficult reading when these blatant errors simply jumped off the pages at the reader. I am hoping that my copy was one that was released accidentally and that others did not experience the same distractions as I did. I also hope this is the result of editing and proofreading rather than coming from the author's computer in that form.

I would probably have been one to buy Griff's story had this not been so distracting. Sorry, can't take that chance.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great start to a new series 9. März 2014

The Cloverleah Pack is a small pack of gay wolf shifters that have been shunned by their home packs. Kane is the Alpha and Griff is his cousin who is also an alpha but chooses to be Kane's second in command. The pack members have been told that gay wolves can not have true mates. They believe this but still have a hope that maybe what they have been told is not true. They find hope that they will one day find their true mates when Kane meets his true mate, Shawn who is called an "Other" because he is different - he has magic. Shawn has been running for his life for years when first his father, and then his uncle, send hunters to kill him. He ends up in Cloverleah, meets Kane and for the first time in his life, has someone love him and a pack that accepts him. The love, support and acceptance Shawn receives from his Kane and his new pack give him he determination to face his pursuers.

The story is hot (the new mating thing), kept me reading and interested in learning the other pack member stories. The Runaway Cat is book 2 and is the story of Griff (Kane"s #2) and Diablo an undercover FBI agent. I immediately bought the sequel and am looking forward to reading book #3 - When No Doesn't Cover It - the story of Scott (Cloverleah pack member) and Damien, the Alpha of one of the largest packs that has formed an alliance with the Cloverleah pack.

I highly recommend this series. This series is now an automatic buy for me. I am also going to look for other books by Lisa Oliver.

Based on many reviews that complained about the poor editing of this book I would never have read it because that stuff makes me crazy. But then I came across a comment from the writer:

"Thank you for your comments, Pati - they are well founded. Unfortunately you were sent an older copy of the book. The copy available on this site has had the errors you listed changed and the book edited. I am sorry you were sent the wrong copy for review.

Best wishes
Lisa Oliver - Author.

So I thought it might be worth a try. I was wrong. If this is the fixed version I would hate to see what it looked like before. Too many errors to count. And that is sad because the story itself was not that bad.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great start to the series. 12. März 2014

I really enjoyed the first book of the Cloverleah Pack series, and was ecstatic that the second book was out so quickly after the first. Kane and Shawn are an awesome couple. I love how they are both strong in their own right, but as a couple they are a serious force to be reckoned with. I definitely loved Shawn's "otherness", and thought it was great how his powers were basically unlimited, but being the kind of person he is, he never used them with malintent. Even when he was punishing the bear shifter. He could have easily ripped him limb from limb, and for what the bear did to Kane he would have been well within his rights in the shifter community. However, he held back and allowed for Damien's pack to seek retribution. His sense of right and wrong, and his protectiveness of those he cares about make him a perfect Alpha Mate. With all that has happened in his past, you would expect him to be jaded and hardened, but he's the opposite. He's compassionate and has good morals, but he's not girly or effeminent by any means. He's even a Master Dom. Kane definitely has the alpha/dominant thing going on, but he is also not your typical alpha that rules his pack like a king. Though his pack is small, each member has their opinions and they know they can express them freely. They operate more like a family than a pack, with Kane as their big brother figure. This novel was action packed, and while the romance was definitely front and center, there was much more going on than just a lot of sex scenes with a little plot thrown in. It was also nice to see Kane's family start to turn over a new leaf and accept same sex matings as not only possible but celebrated.
