Synopsis

You've just spent a day on the water under a sweltering sun. You sit back, enjoying the seclusion of a remote anchorage, lulled by the rattle of ice in your cold drink. A pretty picture, but a rare one aboard cruising boats. A house is never without its utility umbrella, but when you pull your boat's shore-power plug you're on your own. Even good refrigeration systems use a lot of energy. And bad ones? Erase those ice cubes from your tropical fantasy. "Refrigeration for Pleasureboats" explains how the cruising sailor can acquire the amenities - even the necessities - of an efficient onboard refrigeration system. Whether you're off for two days or two years, you must balance the highest possible cooling capacity with the lowest possible energy consumption. Calder explains clearly and logically how and why refrigeration components work, how to keep them working efficiently and economically, and what to look for when something goes wrong.Boat refrigeration systems are phenomenally expensive. A modest refrigerator/freezer system, professionally built and installed, can cost more than $4,000. Yet these units can still have unpleasant side effects - such as killing the boat's batteries.

"Refrigeration for Pleasureboats" provides all the step-by-step information an amateur needs to design and build a custom refrigeration unit that will cost far less than half the price of an off-the-shelf unit and will likely run better with far less drain on the batteries. With Calder's maintenance and troubleshooting tips, you'll be able to keep it running for years to come and keep those ice cubes tinkling in that frosted glass.

The best $ I ever spend. After 40 years of experience in the refrigeration trade, This is the best book I got my hand on. It may be at time a little over technical for the average sailer but this is definitlly a must have. Nigel Calder, I like your style.

This book is technical, and without any previous HVAC knowledge, it'll take some review work to put the pieces together. That being said, it will get you from total ignorance to ability to design, order parts for, and build your own onboard refrigiration unit or freezer. This does need revision, as R12 refrigerant has gone by the wayside, and newer products are now used. The components and design elements however, remain unchanged.

If you want to design and build the perfect onboard unit, I'd say you have to have this book.

Not very good for practical applications. If you like plenty of theory and equations its great, if you are trying to use it so you could repair and maintain your system it is weak and of not much value.

Excellent in all aspects, I got tired of waiting for tecnicians that never arrived. One day after 4 years I decided to get my sailboat's refrigeration back and running, Purchased the book, instruments, and all paraphernalia associated with it, including a Ritchie Vacuum pump from EBay as well as an electronic gas snifer or leak detector. We bought all this among 4 sailboat owners and never again had to call on service. The book is invaluable. And think of the bundle saved plus we don't depend on anyone to resolve our problems.

HASH(0x9cc83954) von 5 Sternen Great book, but very dated 18. September 2013

There is a lot of good stuff in here on boat refrigeration, but it is rather dated. There is a 2 page update from 1994 on R134a, with a new table of properties and the note that you will have to convert all the calculations from R12 to R134a. It doesn't discuss any of the new insulation options such as vacuum panels or aerogel. It focuses heavily on pumped, water-cooled systems and secondarily on air-cooled systems. It doesn't discuss keel coolers or other more recent developments.

Having said that, all the description of refrigeration cycles, operating, tuning, etc., is still valid and well done. There is probably more detail in here than needed for most people. A lot of the focus is on building your own system and choosing and sizing components. Not as applicable if you are using one of the many "kit" systems such as Frigoboat, Isotherm, Technautics, etc. Kollman marine keeps his information more up to date and it may be more valuable if you are looking into systems such as these.

If you are looking to build-your-own, then this will help, but you will still want to supplement your knowledge with any developments made in the last 20 years.
