I really did enjoy reading this novella. The Characters Stella and Jonah are easy to relate to, her being the smart and funny outsider, him being the rich kid whos world dramatically changes overnigt. But why does everything have to be so black and white? The Characters are all acting so heartbreakingly clichee. There's not plot twists, no surprises. It just all goes down as expected. Boy meets girl. They fall in Love. Drama happens. They make up. End. The End also comes way too quickly. She decides to stay on college prep track, he confesses his love to her and that's it? It'd be cool to know what she did after school, how their relationship worked out and what became of Joss and her father. So many loose strings.

High School. What happens when the outsider girl and the popular guy suddenly realise that they actually have something in common and that they do like each other? A nice, romantic feelgood read, something to curl up with.

I absolutely adore Katie McGarry's writing with her relatable characters (male and female) and swoon-worthy romance. Red at Night is a great introduction to McGarry's storytelling and really shows why she is such a talent writer.

Stella is a teenager who lives with her father's on-and-off girlfriend in a decrepit apartment on the wrong side of the tracks. Jonah is from an upper middle class family that prides itself on having money and status. These two young people meet up in the most unusual of places (a cemetery) and forge a friendship and later a relationship based on finally finding someone they can connect with.

I really liked both Stella and Jonah. They each had their own reasons for hanging out in the cemetery and I thought it was a unique way to develop their characters. Their relationship was not perfect with Stella not trusting Jonah's feelings after years of being bullied by his friends and Jonah still being effected by a tragic situation. The development of their friendship was my favorite aspect and, while I liked watching grow to care about one another in a romantic sense, I thought they fell in love too fast.

The main issue that I had with Red at Night was the length. I love McGarry's characters and I wanted more! I would love to have seen this story with more pages. I think that would have helped with insta-love aspect and also prevented the ending from being so abrupt. But, I still thought this was a quick and entertaining read that has McGarry's wonderful prose and fascinating characters.

This was such a sweet story and it made me cry. I tend to get emotional, but it’s really difficult for a novella to make me cry, but these characters just got under my skin very quickly. Katie McGarry is just a genius.

Stella and Jonah are great characters. They are so different from one another, but at the same time they have some very important things in common. They connect in a way they never have with anyone else before. They come from very different crowds. Jonah’s friends have been making fun of Stella for years, and while he never took part he also never said anything, which is just as bad. The fact that Stella reaches out to him despite this shows what a great person she is. Her life has been far from easy and the fact that she is still a great person is wonderful. Now back to the crying. There is a scene in this book where Stella and Jonah volunteer at an organization that provides shoes to children. That scene absolutely shattered me. It was very moving and very emotional.

Red At Night is a wonderful novella and one fans of Katie McGarry do not want to miss. It is a beautiful story and it is simply heartwarming.

I adored Red at Night! This is another novella that I would have loved to read more of as a full-length novel. Stella's dad is never around, so she lives with one of his ex-girlfriends, and hangs out in the cemetery in her free time. Jonah was at the scene of a car accident where he tried to help a man who wound up dying. He now visits the man's grave which is how he meets Stella. The two begin hanging out in the cemetery, just talking, but Stella tries to keep him at arm's length since she doesn't care to hope for more. Of course, by the end, they're together, and it was really sweet.

What I loved most about Red at Night was that there was no huge drama. Stella and Jonah just naturally come together and I needed more of their cemetery dates! I also really liked Jonah standing up to his friend who's been bullying Stella since they were kids. And I loved watching Stella dare to dream of more from her life despite her less than ideal living and financial situation. I just really, really liked this one.

In Red at Night, Katie McGarry once again does what she does best - creates a beautiful story about two seemingly opposites, who, once found in a unique circumstance, find each other and become the better for it. I won't give away the plot, as it is a short story and I don't want to spoil anything, but I can truly say that I loved it. I loved how the story seemed to touch on so many things - hope, trust, indifference, silence, conviction, purpose, charity, love. I was so impressed that McGarry could fit so much in so few pages and make the story feel complete. It was beautifully done.

McGarry's strength is not only in amazing storytelling, but in the golden touch she has with character development. You wouldn't expect to get so attached to Stella and Jonah in these few pages, but I did! They were fully rounded out characters. You get just enough backstory, just enough current situation, and just enough hope, that you'll love them. Even the few secondary characters felt like they weren't just cardboard cut-outs. And, though this isn't officially part of McGarry's Pushing the Limits series, one of my favorite characters makes an appearance, and I got a big smile on my face. It was the perfect addition to this already remarkable novella.

Overall, I loved Red at Night! I loved the beautiful, touching story and the remarkable, heartfelt characters. If you are a fan of McGarry's than you will love this treat. If you are unfamiliar with McGarry's writing, then this is the perfect way to get a peek at her writing, and discover for yourself how great she is.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Red at Night - Katie McGarry 2. Oktober 2014

I have read most of Katie McGarry's stories and enjoyed them immensly.

However this story I rated as a 4 star. My reason is this a novella and for the fact that it lacked the depth of emotion and storyline that her other books have displayed.

Stella and Jonah - I really felt that the personalities and their depth of character only superficially scraped the surface of the feelings that they might have experienced. Stella comes from a background of being intermittently, and I say intermittently, brought up by her father who disappears randomly. She is currently living with her father's girlfriend and attending school. Stella comes from a background of instability and a lack of financial resources, she meets Jonah at a cemetery and it is here that the beginning of their relationship develops. However, I felt that Jonah's suffering ultimately ended up being owned by him. Jonah was not responsible for what happened to John Cohen, therefore I found it hard to understand why Jonah felt such a sense of responsibility for John's death.

What I liked was that because of Jonah's traumatic experience his eyes were opened to the fragility of life and the fact that we don't always have a choice as to the path that life takes us down. Stella had a real sense of rejection that she had suffered at the hands of Jonah's friends, in particular Cooper, and their prejudices with regard to her individuality and her lifestyle. Ultimately the friendship and bonding that developed between them at the cemetery brings two beautiful but damaged people together with the help of self healing for themselves individually and also as a couple.

I certainly recommend this book but the stories that this author has written namely Crash into You, Dare to You, Pushing the Limits and Take Me On are definitely an amazingly good read.
