In Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, psychology professor John Gottman explores the emotional relationship between parents and children. It's not enough to simply reject an authoritarian model of parenting, Gottman says. A parent needs to be concerned with the quality of emotional interactions. Gottman, author of Why Marriages Succeed or Fail, and coauthor Joan Declaire focus first on the parent (a "know thyself" approach), and provide a series of exercises to assess parenting styles and emotional self-awareness. The authors identify a five-step "emotion coaching" process to help teach children how to recognize and address their feelings, which includes becoming aware of the child's emotions; recognizing that dealing with these emotions is an opportunity for intimacy; listening empathetically; helping the child label emotions; setting limits; and problem-solving. Chapters on divorce, fathering, and age-based differences in emotional development help make Gottman's teachings detailed and useful. --Ericka Lutz

The author(s) speak about how to react in difficult situations with kids/teenagers that are acting stragely (at least when we see them and do not understand their motifs).
I missed more examples on how to handle different demanding situations with children, however I think this is also up to each parent/educator to decide on how to adapt to each situation.
As each book on education maybe the ideas from this one will be at one point out-of-fashion. I am still willing to try some of them in my interractions with the kids.
This is not an exhaustive book and there is plenty of space to bring in your own ideas in your daily life.
Anyway, a read I recommend to anybody dealing with kids/teenagers but also adults :-)
Friends and family are full of advice, often good, sometimes contradictory, and sometimes bad and nieve. But some studied professional advice is best. This is a short book full of just that.
Reading it opened my eyes to many thing. I now feel much more confident. It made me think about the mistakes my parents made, that I had not realised where mistakes. There I felt sad. But I have also understood the varied differences that have effect the lives of other people I know for the better. And some of the advice and research in this book is really eye opening. I happy for the knowledge, and would really recoment this book to anyone.
