Kurzbeschreibung

Kip has the worst case of acne that anyone has ever seen. Zits cover his entire body; his skin is aflame with bright red, pus-filled sores. He has become an outcast in his school and the other kids call him Toad.

But what they don't know is the pus leaking from Kip's acne is actually a powerful narcotic that produces strong psychedelic effects. Soon, everyone in school will want a taste of his hallucinogenic cream and this former-loser will become the most popular kid in school. But once you lick the Toad, there's no going back to normal drugs. His classmates just can't get enough. And as their addiction grows, they will stop at nothing to get it...

In the spirit of Street Trash and Class of Nukem' High comes a novel about growing up, finding yourself, and tripping on bodily fluids. Shane McKenzie and Eraserhead Press present a bizarro high school drama drenched in Technicolor-splatter!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Bizarro tale told beautifully with fully-developed characters 23. Mai 2015
Von Mike Kazmierczak - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This is one book that I was glad to read as an ebook. The reason being that the cover kind of grossed me out and I was glad to not have to see it whenever I picked up the book. However, I'm also a little bummed because McKenzie deserves a ton of appreciation for his book and more people should see and read it.

Kip is a high schooler with a severe case of acne. He's taking medicine and topicals for it but nothing works. It's so bad that the kids at school call him Toad. Then one day he discovers that the pus in his zits contain a powerful narcotic that drives everyone who tastes it crazy and euphoric. Kip becomes the ultimate drug dealer of his own acne pus.

Sure, the idea is bizarre and gross but that is what makes the novel so brave. All the characters are three dimensional and engaging. The events in the story unfold naturally; well, narcotic acne pus isn't really natural so maybe that should be the story unfolds logically instead. I wish that Jade (one of girls in the story) was a bit more likable but she also played her part in the story perfectly. The only part of the book that I wish was different was the Epilogue. It carried the story further but undid a bit of what happened before and made the ending even more tragic. I can't figure out if I dislike the additional tragedy or the dead person who was brought back more. In the end it doesn't matter because the story hooked me and entertained me. I look forward to reading more books by McKenzie.
4.0 von 5 Sternen High Concept Done Right 11. März 2016
Von Kirk Jones - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
A critique of bizarro fiction you'll find from time to time is that sometimes great concepts get stretched too thin in order to reach novella or novel length. High-concept fiction is hard to write, but McKenzie does it right. This book hooks you early on and eases you into the core concept that acts as a guiding premise. The title and description lets you know what is coming, and half the fun is turning each page, waiting to see when the bizarro elements will reach fruition. The book was great. It was 80s high-school horror with tweaks to the archetypes in all the right places. Definitely worth checking out.

4.0 von 5 Sternen GOOEY COLORFUL SICK 5. Februar 2014
Von Daniel Vlasaty - The Buffalo - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
PUS JUNKIES is nasty. Like nasty-nasty. It is a gross out high school drama bizarro story. But it’s also horror. It’s kind of more horror than bizarro. But it’s gross and it’s Shane Mckenzie so you can kind of assume it’s going to be nasty and drippy and a bit unsettling.

Kip has acne. Terrible acne. The worst acne in the history of puberty. It’s so bad that he’s basically a monster. The kids at school call him The Toad. They hate him. They make fun of him. They beat him up. He doesn’t have any friends. He’s alone. His best friend is his mommy. But then his cousin, Zak, moves in with him. Zak’s having trouble at home, at school. Trouble with drugs. His mom’s boyfriend is beating him up. So he moves in with his aunt and his zitty cousin.

Kip thinks things are going to change. He’s got his cousin back. They used to be best friends. When they were kids. Zak’s cool and handsome and far more popular than Kip after only a week at school. Kip was right, though, things are going to change. Things are going to get nasty and dirty.

On Senior Skip Day, Zak convinces Kip to skip and attend a party with the cool kids. One thing leads to another and the prettiest girl in school, Jade, ends up eating a small amount of pus from one of Kip’s zits. (That might be one of the weirdest sentences I’ve ever written – and I’m a bizarro writer).

It turns out Kip’s zit-pus is a strong, highly addictive drug. It instantly turns “users” into raging monsters. Their only reason for living is Kip’s pus. And they’ll do anything to get some more of it.

This book is nutty. It’s funny and gross and not at all for the squeamish. It’s also everything I’ve come to expect from a Shane McKenzie book. There is so much pus and blood and shit and just about every other body fluid here that you almost need to wear a hazmat suit while reading. It basically jumps off the page at you. All the grossness. All the gooey colorful sick.

I loved it. There were times when I felt like I should have been even more grossed out than I already was. Maybe I’m just a sick, desensitized man. But if that’s true then Shane McKenzie is the sickest person ever. He’d have to be to write PUS JUNKIES, right?
5.0 von 5 Sternen McKenzie has successfully written a book that makes the reader feel like they are front row at a GWAR concert 21. April 2016
Von Shane - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
If you were a big fan of the kid’s snack Fruit Gushers, then this is a book for you. All you need to do is picture eating a Fruit Gusher filled with pus instead of juice and you will have the general idea of what this book is about. McKenzie has successfully written a book that makes the reader feel like they are front row at a GWAR concert, fluids and blood erupting all over the audience, and it is disgustingly beautiful.

The strength of this book comes from its dribbling, blood crusted imagery and situations, yet I will add that the characters do a good job of making one care about them, at least for about a quarter of the book. I felt that Kip was an interesting character and he did manage to make me hope for him, but like I said, that was only for about a quarter of the book. The rest of the time all I cared about was what horrid, goo drenched scene was coming around the corner, and for this novel, that works.

This book is a Troma studios film in words. I give this novel five out of five stars, and now i’m off to eat some pus...whoops….Gushers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is possibly one of the grossest books you will ever read...and best! 24. Mai 2014
Von Nick Patnaude - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This is possibly one of the grossest books you will ever read--if, that is, you can make it to the surreal and violent conclusion without burning the book with flammable hand sanitizer and running to the shower with a two gallon tub of soap and a three gallon bottle of shampoo. I read it in about two days.

The writing is precise and direct and the voice feels authentic, even though the premise is nightmarish and disturbingly disgusting: you see this kid Kip's numerous zits contain a pus substance that is a highly addictive drug. And his blood? Well, I won't spoil that surprise...but if you dig the imagery of Lovecraft at his most body-horror-ish, you will love this.

Reading it feels like watching a b-movie (as many books of the bizarro genre); so, while it is not exactly a literary masterpiece, it is pulpy, fast, and fun.

So what's different about this bizarro stuff than your ordinary, run-of-the-mill police-procedural drivel that you can pick up at your local drugstore? Originality. This weird fever dream has never been written before.
