Harry Potter und das verwunschene Kind
Harry Potter Fans aufgepasst: die deutsche Ausgabe des Skripts zum Theaterstück ist ab dem 24.September erhältlich Jetzt vorbestellen

This book concentrates on three main areas.

1. Easy to read, yet detailed explanations of all the 3D printing related technologies currently available
2. Practical advice on how this technology can be leveraged as a successful business in today's economy.
3. The wider long-term repercussions, including real world examples of how 3D printing is set to change the future of industry.

Part 1 of this book presents the various 3D printing systems currently on the market, covering their background, their functionality and their relative pros and cons. Separate chapters offer similarly in-depth examinations of the very latest scanning technologies, 3D modelling software and 3D file archives. Complex technical processes are explained in detail, but using language accessible to readers who are new to this fascinating subject.

Part 2 focuses specifically on areas in which a 3D printer can be used to generate income. It examines a wide range of niche markets presenting real world examples and current success stories. In addition, it identifies and explores many unfilled niches that are still wide open. The author talks extensively about his own projects and analyses large amounts of very well researched information that is unavailable elsewhere.

Part 3 looks at the bigger picture. Individual chapters concentrate upon emerging materials, how the industry is scaling up production, and where the battle lines are being drawn amongst the complex legal issues. Readers are introduced to the highly disruptive nature of distributed manufacturing, demonstrating many of the global impacts and developments that will transform entire economies in the next ten years.

Far from being a dry technical manual, this book addresses three key issues that are important to anybody interested in this rapidly evolving field. What are 3D printers all about? How can they be used to make money? What does the immediate future hold for this amazing technology? Humorous, insightful and inspiring in equal measure, and yet priced at a small fraction of its competitors.

Delivers a very interesting and entertaining (lots of examples and good explanations) introduction regarding 3d printing - the book does not only focus on the essentials of the printing itself but also connected areas including market places, 3d scanning, 3d modeling tools/cad. Each topic is described by introducing (actual) basic technologies (formats, handling...) as well as examples regarding software or hardware solutions. A large part of the book contributes interesting and creative ideas on how to become a part of the "maker community" - for fun or to make money (both is possible too :-P).

A great overview of 3D printing technologies, their history and their potentials for a more than reasonable price!

If you are generally interested in 3D printing without a certain knowledge about this topic, this eBook might be the right choice. If you already know a lot about 3D printing, this book is a great consumption of many things you might have heard of, and furthermore an inspiration for what you can do next with your own 3D printer.

Christopher D. Winnan describes the basis in printing, scanning and modeling with many examples for available (free and low cost) products. In many examples he shows up, what is possible with 3D printing today, and gives a critical view on the economical and social impact and potential of this technology.

HASH(0x9e3b6df8) von 5 Sternen Mostly Disappointed 27. Oktober 2013

I purchased the this book to learn more about financial opportunities that are possible using 3D printing technologies. I was impressed with the authors knowledge of the existing equipment and their relative strengths and weaknesses and I was also impressed with the authors deep knowledge of all the different characters one could make across the world of comic books, video games and anime. However, what I wasn't impressed with was the financial model the author claims readers can capitalize on. Essentially, the idea is that print up these characters and models one by one and sell them on eBay. I am sure you can make a few bucks but no one is going to quit there job doing this kind of work.

What really set me off was when the author ran off the road and started talking about politics with the author's leftist leanings became very apparent. It's not just that I didn't buy this book to hear about the author's political hobby horses, but that his ideas were so naive. The author suggested that the revolution of 3D printing could actually put the majority of manufacturing workers out of a job! Like many lefty pseudo-political thinkers, he falls into the trap of believing in a zero sum gain economy. 3D printing won't destroy the manufacturing industry any more than robots did. It will change the industry, it will shift the industry, it will create many new opportunities, but it will not put tens of thousands out of work.

To compound my frustration with the book, the when the author started to talk about the potential of printing firearms on a 3D printer, he again ran off the road to talk about politics. The author suggested that the easy availability of firearms in Thailand accounted for it having the 3rd highest murder rate. What he didn't mention is that South Africa has the highest murder rate in the world with virtually no murders by firearms due to the draconian laws on the books. Again, naive politics that shouldn't be in the book.

In closing the core proposition posed by the book proved to be not very compelling and when the reader has to suffer through the author's sophomoric political views, it makes for a book that is not worth reading. Take a pass on this one.

32 years ago computers were fairly common in the enterprise, but terribly expensive and well beyond the reach of the masses. However, at that time a bunch of geeks were building small computers in their garages. These first affordable computers were limited in capability, but the limitations were soon overcome and now there is a computer on every desk. Many of the original computer geeks became very wealthy in the process. 3D printing is at the stage computers were 32 years ago. This is a technology on the verge of exploding and Winnan's book does an excellent job describing the transition from the here-and-now into the future. It's a must read.

HASH(0x9e3b9024) von 5 Sternen Good, energetic intro to 3D printing 24. Mai 2013

Good overview with a lot of enthusiasm. I liked the links to internet sites for further info, but it sometimes comes across a bit as as the text from a high school presentation. For example, the 3D modelling resource info includes material clearly lifted straight from the website or other promotional lit - it is good to have but is just a glorified list.
As others have mentioned, he goes on an anti-capitalism rant that is silly, especially when he touts the idea of socialism (regardless "managed capitalism", so no one will know it is socialism) while he repeatedly bashes the PRC as corrupt, brutal, and bereft of innovation. Just ignore the political commentary - there is plenty of good info in the book, and I'll bet that you will be excited about the potential of this technology.

It's amazing how far time advances things. Printers seemed to be behind for the most part. We had color and photo printers but not much else until this new technology emerged!

There is so much information about 3D printing that its astonishing to think of the possibilities! This book gives you a glimpse into the possibility of where this may soon go. It is simply amazing when you learn what this is currently capable of. Technology is advancing, this is not only an emerging technology but one that is destined to be vital to the world economy.

An amazing book, educational, informative and really captures your imagination to the possibilities! Must have!

The author pretty much seems to have cribbed from the internet. Jumps around, text is laid out poorly and I need anecdotes from him about his political views like I need a second anal aperture. Wow what a lot of business ideas he has ... you can make figurines, dolls or "action figures" - wow!
