In the last days of Elizabeth I's reign the Marsden family are living in the North of England. While the country waits and wonders who will take the throne the north is worried the Scottish King James will be the next king. There is a long history of hatred between the Scots and the fear is they will sweep south and exact revenge ... with the monarch's blessing. The Marsden family have a tradition of telling stories and those stories shed light on their present problems. In "The Prince of Rags and Patches" they find themselves entangled in a murder mystery and Great Uncle George's launches into the story of Richard III and the princes in the Tower.

Set in the early 1600's towards the end of Queen Elizabeth I's reign, we are introduced to the Marsden family of Marsden Hall in northeast England. William is the narrator, his mother had served Mary, Queen of Scots and his grandmother had been a lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn. Expected to train as a knight, William had traveled the world but was now home to take over as "little emperor of the Marsden estates". What he really wanted to do was join Mr. Shakespeare's acting company but doesn't dare tell anyone that! What is the story behind the serving wench, Meg? Why can William not make her do what he wants?

This book actually contains two stories: one that is currently happening in present time and the other one, being told by Great Uncle George, concerning William's great-great-grandfather, Anthony Marsden who worked as head bodyguard for Richard, Duke of Gloucester aka lord Dickon. This was the duke who kept the two princes locked in the Tower of London after the death of his brother, Edward IV, going on to claim the throne for himself. Anthony is given charge of the two princes until the fateful night of their disappearance. What happens when Henry Tudor makes an attempt at the throne and later than that the supposed Duke of York reappears on the scene?

The 'present day' story concerns a certain Humphrey Vere. Queen Elizabeth I is dying. Vere has been sent to visit King James VI of Scotland to see if he will agree to become King James I of England after her death. Vere is intercepted, messages stolen and a murdered body is found. What does Meg persuade William to do? What does the old and wise woman tell William? Acting as detectives, can William and Meg find out who the true murderer is and the name of the victim?

At the end of this story, first in the series, the author explains what is fictional and what is not plus provides a timeline of the actual known facts which is very useful and educational. As I read this book I was trying to determine what age group it was written for. Teenagers, young adults and up is what I came up with. I enjoyed it as it really brings history to life and I look forward to reading more of William and Meg's adventures in future books. It is a little too "old" for young ones and I wouldn't recommend it for the under 10's. I purchased this book for my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
