5.0 von 5 Sternen Beginners guide and experienced checklist 19. Juli 2011
Von Leslie B. Hock - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I am not usually a fan of the 'dummy's guide to....' or '101 easy steps to...' kind of book. This excellent little handbook is a rare exception. Well written and broken down into logical subject headings it is a great checklist for the seasoned prepper to see if their preps are as complete as they think. Have you really checked to see if you have everything needed to cook that food you stored? Really? Going through the food section will help double check what you have.

For the beginner who is overwhelmed by the idea that they have to go out and get a year's supply of food at $1300 per person this little book is the answer. Simply put, don't waste your money. The guide leads through easy stages to find what you need, where to get it, and how to store it. No huge outlays - you can successfully prep on $5 a week and this guide shows you how.

In each major area, the book takes you through the essentials and shows you what you need and how to get it. There is no attempt to sell you on this gizmo or that food supplier. It is a simple straightforward look at those things that one needs should the support structure that we have grown accustom to disappear.

Now, for the draw back. One of the reasons I am not a fan of most guides is that they don't contain enough detail. While this guide is better than most, no pocket guide can contain the background information that will help you understand the 'why' of something. It can tell you to use unscented chlorine bleach to make your water safe to drink but doesn't go into detail as what is wrong with the lemon scented stuff in the laundry room. It is a minor point and I would hope all readers would get interested and seek more information in every area. While I found the book accurate and often offering alternatives to critical needs, my bias says that being informed of the 'why' of a thing better equips you for survival.

With that caveat, this little guide is very helpful for both old and new preppers alike. It is small enough to be carried (do you remember EXACTLY how much bleach to use per gallon of water? It's in the book) so it should always be available. It is a great refresher for things you already know and a really solid checklist to see if there are any gaping holes in your preps.

The price is very reasonable and you can have a hard copy and a copy on your Kindle for under $20. I highly recommend it as an easy read with a great deal of information that just might keep you or a loved one alive.

5.0 von 5 Sternen no fantastic requirements, just common sense coupled with clever ideas ... 28. April 2017
Von JONATHAN CLEGG - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
First off this is small, size of a small bible or thereabouts. The paper is thin and the content is varied. The tone is reasonable and realistic. There is no preaching of doomsday scenarios, no fantastic requirements, just common sense coupled with clever ideas for staying alive in case things happen.

I will say that since it's really a giant bullet list of "101 easy things", they usually don't dig too deep into any topic, that said a really important one like how to get water is very well done. The author covers a lot of creative and varied ways to keep hydrated. He's reasonable when it comes to food storage, reminding the reader that instead of a zombie apocalypse, it's much more likely that the family is stuck at home for a few days, and why not pack cookies and treats to keep everyone happy.

Tone and ideas like this make this book an instant recommendation and a happy purchase.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Easy Preparedness 6. Oktober 2015
Von L. W. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Great summary of preparedness skills and even some basic survival, not just hoarding food. I particularly like the checklists because they give me a plan and goals. This book makes being prepared as routine as a trip to the store. It's simple, realistic, practical. No fear mongering.

The strategies in the resource are so practical that in a few, virtually no-stress, weeks, I could be ready for most situations involving interruptions in food, water, and electricity just by following the advice and strategies the way they are written.

There is even a checklist for the office in case I get caught at work! I will forever keep an old pair of walking shoes in the trunk of my car, too!

The only thing I'd say lowered my rating is the reliance on canned food from the store. I try to avoid canned food, but using up canned food routinely is part of the plan. For those who don't mind, the canned food makes being prepared much easier. (There is some info on home canning but not a how-to since it's not a canning book.) In spite of this small criticism, I am a satisfied book owner.

This book is a good value. The information is reliable. Save some time, money, and frustration trying to find this information by yourself, and get this book because it has information you probably won't even think to look for. Put your efforts into your preparation; this book is step one.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sensible and useful for any home-owner 20. November 2012
Von Doug Bowker - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I bought this as a guide for future and likely weather related emergencies. I live on the East Coast, near the water and seeing how recent weather events have taken out power, water and other essential utilities in even places like NYC, it seemed prudent to plan ahead. These events won't be slowing down I expect, and I'll take the philosophy of "Hope for the best, but plan for the worst." Not that I have ever been totally unprepared, but this guide helped me and the family think longer term. This book really should almost be one of those things that should be given out free by civil defense or emergency preparedness workers (even at fire stations). In any case, it's inexpensive and worth every penny, assuming you actually use it wisely.

On the other hand, I am NOT looking to plan for what might be called "survivalist" total civilizational collapse. Though history tells us that even the best of places and societies CAN have that happen, history also amply demonstrates those who are paying attention have plenty of time to plan ahead. I'm more concerned with Katrina, Sandy and other severe events that can last for weeks, or maybe months, at the worst.

NOTE TO BEGINNERS: I just want to point out I'm a former Eagle Scout, can build furniture and fix most anything, so my level of comfort with some of the projects/planning in the book may be different than someone who is not used to anything outside the average suburban environment. Home bodies and office workers should first off just get comfortable camping and getting dirty, along with with basic home repairs before embarking on emergency prepping. If all your power is out and the family is panicked, it's NOT a good time to try and learn how to build a fire, trust me! But like most things, it's not rocket science, and with a little practice and the right attitude, you might actually have fun learning something new.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Must Read for Preppers and Survivalists 22. Januar 2015
Von John (aka The Tenth Man) - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

It was through my research on survival books that I came across The Prepper’s Pocket Guide: 101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Family for a Disaster by Bernie Carr. After reading her material, it became apparent to me that her work is a formative piece with both thought provoking and practical information for those especially beginners interested in general emergency preparedness and survival preparation for the likelihood of any one of the possible natural calamities or societal worst case scenarios one might face.

Ms. Carr is a proponent of a Do it Yourself approach to emergency preparedness. She helps dis-spell many of the myths surrounding preppers and prepping. This is written in an easy to follow step by step format to guide the reader especially the beginner prepper.

The book provides real life examples to prep especially for those on a limited budget. This book is accessible and not intimidating for beginner preppers. The 101 suggested mini projects are extremely doable.

As mentioned, I found her information solid and valuable that I incorporated many of her thoughts into my preparation and survival acumen. I would highly recommend anyone serious on emergency preparedness and survivalism to read her book. It will definitely give you practical and sound approaches to improving your prepper skill set.
